Once you walk into this place, discretely located on the second floor of a modest size commercial building down the block from Fordham University, you can tell this is a labor of love, a destination for musicians. While browsing an assortment of all kinds of instruments, you can overhear chatter about repairs and advice with a customer, individual attention rendered by the owner himself. Totally laid back. In my case, I needed to have the action adjusted on an old, but very good classical guitar I had come into possession of. I left it with the owner to see what could be done. After a few day he called to say, "I'm not comfortable with lowering the action any more than it is," taking the time to explain that for this particular guitar, the action was already set at the optimal, and therefore there would be "no charge at all," for checking it over. I was impressed that rather than take money for doing work that was not needed, the owner took the time to give the guitar a thorough check, and then get back to me to offer an honest assessment, all at no charge. Not hard to see why they have been in business in the same neighborhood for generations. I highly recommend this little gem of a shop. I took my Korg Kronos 61 note synth in for repair on Tuesday of this week. Apparently, I had done some damage when the keyboard took a tumble, in it's case, on the way in to a gig. Several sharp (black) notes were slipping off track and dragging naturals (white) down with them. Andrew Bronen greeted me when I arrived and had me place the keyboard on the counter and explain the problem. Without opening it, he correctly predicted that some keys were partially broken, judging by the issue and the sounds of plastic rattling around inside. Andrew then proceeded to give me an estimate of $149 to repair it. He said that the time it would take would depend on how long it took him to get the replacement keys from Korg. I figured that it would be a minimum of a week and made plans to gig with some alternate equipment. I left the store and went back to work. I got a telephone call from Andrew about an hour later, telling me that a few more keys were broken then initially thought, and that it would be an additional $10. I said no problem, please let me know when the repair is complete. I didn't really think about it again until I received another late afternoon call the on Thursday. I have to admit, I feared that they had found something more serious and that the estimated repair price would be climbing. Much to my surprise and delight, one of the assistants in the store informed me that the repair was done. It was too late for me to pick it up that day, so I informed the assistant that I would stop by on my lunch hour at the next day which was today. This was awesome news to me, because that meant that I would have my regular equipment for my gig this weekend. I want to say that despite so much unprofessionalism that goes on in the world today, it's nice to know there are businesses who operate properly and don't promise what they can't deliver. The people at Bronen's couldn't have been more informative, helpful and prompt. Andrew also did a great job on my 88 key MIDI controller last year, and it was very reasonable. -I've sent my Stratocaster there to wire the volume and tone pots and they were not properly wired so on top of the 150$ i paid for a simple task I had to send the guitar over to Guitar Center to properly wire my guitar. -2 Weeks ago I made the same mistake and I sent my amp there to add a top boost on my Vox amp (Only 5 wires to be solder on the amp) ,the guy postponed the pick up date 3 times (14 days) and after 14 days I had to go and pick it up NOT repaired and find another place. THINK BEFORE YOU GO THERE.I was so close to call the business bureau and report how irresponsible they are but the reason i didn't do it is because i don't have time to deal with morons and at least the repairman was honest after 14 days saying I don't feel comfortable to repair you amp.Imagine that. read more

Went here to get my 36 year old guitar checked out, strings replaced, etc... they kept it for a day or 2 to be thorough and I got it back and it's fantastic. Everything is adjusted correctly and Manny was so helpful, he even cleaned it for me. I'm just starting up again on the guitar. I'll definitely be going back whenever I need anything. Brought an acoustic in for new strings, neck adjustment, and told them to do whatever other setup they thought it needed, trusting their judgment. They ended up taking one side of the saddle down a ridiculous amount, to the point that the b and e string practically rest on the frets. Action ended up being 1/64th on the high e, 2/64ths on the low e! They also did a lousy job winding the new strings with not enough wraps, and one had an overlapping coil. Stupidly I didn't check out the guitar before taking it home, but needless to say I was pretty pissed when I discovered the guitar was unplayable. So I paid $50 for a ruined guitar that now needs a new saddle - a much more expensive repair job. Needless to say they will not be performing that repair. There are much better places in the city to bring your guitars. In fact, you're probably better off taking a whack at it yourself because no matter who you are you probably have more skill than they do. read more
