An attractively decorated, cute little store/deli/breakfast store on Broadway High Street. They sell a wide variety of foods and treats, very fresh produce (looked awesome), baked goods and sandwiches (see pictures). We never bought any of their goods, although (upon asking) I managed to try some of their own brand marmalade - which was delicious.
If I was jut rating the store on the basis of appearance and the look of the goods for sale it would be a 4 or 5.
However we made the mistake of having breakfast there. First the service was mediocre - felt ignored as we stood waiting to be seated (we could see an empty table. Staff ignoring us, turning their back to us and attended to people already sitting without even a "I will seat you in a moment" or similar. So I had to flag the guy making coffee at the back of the store to seat us. Everything about the service, throughout a time in the store felt "off", not warm, not friendly, perhaps not welcome. Add this to the clearly "aristocracy" attitude of some of the locals and it took us back to uncomfortable places in certain parts of the US. Then came the coffee (latte at best OK), followed by breakfast which I wish I had not ordered. I switched the standard mushrooms for more toast and paid for a side of (tasteless) home made baked beans. The scrambled eggs were good (although I wish that they had had black pepper on the table - or an attentive staff member to offer brown sauce or similar to add taste. Then, based on my experience, AVOID meats. My sausage was black (burnt but just about edible) and the bacon was so burnt that it could be banged on the plate as if it was made of metal or glass. Totally inedible. When I complained the bacon was deducted from the bill. I did get a comment about they served it crispy - and the person to whom I first mentioned it muttering to a colleague that he was having a bad day (poor thing - but he was getting paid, while I was paying for the "privilege" of being there).
So 4-5 stars for the store, 1-2 stars for the breakfast and service. Average 3 stars
Would I go back? Certainly not for breakfast
