My son has been studying piano here with various instructors for a little over three years now. I'm…read morevery happy with his progress. In fact, I'm writing this review while he is practicing "Scarborough Fair." He's come a long way since playing early pieces without chords. :) The owner hires excellent instructors. That's one of the advantages of going to a studio instead of trying to find someone on your own. He's had the same main teacher for his whole time here, but every substitute teacher that he's had has been very good with kids. That's another advantage of a studio: weekly lessons whether or not your main instructor can make it. If you want to make progress at an instrument, you need to make a weekly commitment. The system of instruction seems to be well-thought out. I like the main set of piano books that they use, and they also add other types of pieces--jazz, some pop tunes--so that he is learning more than just the classical style. The teachers have also been willing to work with my son's interests. When he expressed an interest in playing Master of Puppets (not my idea ...) and Pinball Wizard, they found suitable music for his level so that he could give the pieces a shot. Everything is really well organized. The shift to online instruction with COVID was handled very well. It's been easy to get online with the music teachers. We also get emails after the lesson detailing what he needs to cover in the following week. I think the class makeup policy is completely fair. It is simply unreasonable to allow students to reschedule classes. For one, there is no space for it in a teacher's schedule, and it is unfair to ask teachers to reserve a couple hours a week for makeup slots that might be filled or might not be filled, effectively denying them compensation for those hours in their week. A teacher should not be robbed of income just because a family can't make a regularly scheduled time slot. And the makeup lessons they do offer are fine--they kept my son on track with his musical development, which is what I really want to see. By the way, this is not just a studio for kids who love to practice and do so without being asked. My son is not always enthusiastic about practicing, but the teachers have done a great job of keeping him motivated and working with him on those days when he hasn't done enough or is feeling a little unmotivated. Also, the studio does a great job of using a rewards system to motivate kids to keep practicing regularly. Getting music lessons can be a tremendous benefit for your child's mind and spirit. If you are thinking about music lessons for your child, but hesitant about the investment, take a look at the research that shows how music benefits cognition, memory, and mood. For a few hundred dollars a month you can potentially help your child get more out of school, as well as open up new worlds of possibility for career and social life. Amabile is a great place to make that happen. Our family is very, very happy with how we have seen our son progress.

We had some disagreements with the school about scheduling and they hung in with us and we worked it out. It's nice that there's a person (in our case, Cheri) at the other end of every email who is quick to respond to our concerns, flexible and has partnered well with us on solving problems.

I was wary of finding a new instructor since he was with his original instructor for almost 4 years before we decided to make the switch due to her moving to a new location which was too out of the way for us. The transition between instructors was almost seamless. Dawn keeps it exciting for my son by allowing him to incorporate his own new musical findings into their lessons. I am very happy with how she's been able to insert formal music lessons while still allowing him to be creative and rock out after the more serious stuff.

That guy from the Romantics who sang What I Like About You (way better than Talking In Your Sleep)? So cool. But how to find a teacher? Most drummers are hateful people: they're grumpy, chain-smoking night owls, filled with nihilistic impulses (see Keith Moon). If you're lucky you'll find one who won't spit beer on you while you practice. If you're the parent of a kid who wants to learn you'll be lucky if your son or daughter doesn't return from their lesson with a tattoo of a flaming, grinning truck across their chest. I'd searched for a good teacher for years, and had just about given up hope when, from within the dark, smog-like cloud of hate which surrounds most drummers, there shone a beam of brilliant light. That light was Dawn Richardson. You'll need to get past the initial crush you develop for her: the adorable crooked smile, the personality, the cute red hair with a streak of gray that makes you feel better about being 40 and still wanting to be in a rock band. She's charming and sexy, so you will fall in love with her when she sits down and starts to play (you might even fall in love with her just from listening to her play; if you're blind and take a lesson from her lemme know if that happens). Get past it if you can and let her teach you. There's no "OK, start here, then do this, then do this, then...stop talking, no talking...then do this." She talks to you, she finds out what you like, what you want to learn, what your goals are. Armed with that knowledge she assesses where you're skill level is at and gives you what you need to get where you want to go. Her studio is every wanna-be drummer's wet dream: kits, equipment (you won't know what it's for, maybe she doesn't either, it's not important), posters, a gold album (Did I mention she's the drummer for 4 Non-Blondes? Is your drum teacher the drummer for 4 Non-Blondes? No? Mine is.). It's worth half of what she charges just to hang out in there with her. You want to learn to play the drums. Call Dawn. Go to her. Steal your friend's bike and ride it to her studio. Do what she says. Then you can email me to thank me.

Morgan is not only an incredibly talented vocal teacher, but also a warm, patient, and supportive mentor who truly cares about her students. My daughter always looked forward to her lessons each week and grew tremendously in both confidence and vocal ability under Morgan's instruction. Morgan creates such a positive and comfortable learning environment, and her kindness and encouragement meant so much to our family. She was also very understanding and flexible with scheduling and communication, which we deeply appreciated. I came into the studio (virtually, lol) nervous and super self-conscious about my voice, and she immediately helped me feel at home and more at ease with producing sound. Her technical explanations and the visual imagery she provides during warm-ups have been revelatory as well. She's helped me expand my range, improve my vocal tone, and strengthen my confidence as a singer. I recommend her highly. I'd honestly give her double the stars if I could :)
