Had Sunday lunch at The Britannia. Haven't been there for a while, but the pub is a well maintained clean and comfortable environment, and a lovely location by the river with boats invited to moor up and enjoy the pub.
There's a reasonable selection of the usual ales, this visit offered Cask Marque standard Directors, Adnams, IPA and a couple of others and the Directors was well served.
On Sundays this Chef and Brewer pub offers 'Sunday Lunch' for a shade under £9 each with a choice of pork, half a chicken or beef or a veggie option.
For meat lovers you can have the 'trio', which is all three meats, which costs a few quid more.
Meals come with the usual sides, stuffing, roast and mashed potatoes, veggies (which included carrots, peas, green beans and mange touts).
Although the freshly cooked, menu foods appeared to be pretty good, this Sunday lunch option is not of equal quality (even if it is of equal price).
One roast potato looked almost rotten inside, the carrots were almost raw, but not in a good way. The green beans were overcooked and stringy. The stuffing was dry, flaky and tasteless, the yorkshire pudding was not home made and more like a crisp, and the meats were either dry or chewy.
Unfortunately, despite replacing the 'rotten' potato with a few (equally uncooked) fresh ones, the staff were not terribly interested in the problem - almost as if they knew it was like that.
On a positive note, the mange tout were nice.
Not being a massive fan of Toby Inns, I would much rather go there for Sunday lunch than The Britannia as the food would undoubtedly be of a higher standard and a lower cost. read more
