But really who goes to a pub in England and not order fish and chips. This is the place to do so. They do have a restaurant but I believe you need a reservation for that. This country pub is a slice of heaven…read more Hook Norton has a very good brewery, and there are several pubs nearby that carry its ales. The Pear Tree is the closest, and it's good enough that we've driven out to it from London several times. It's tucked in the middle of the village of Hook Norton, a very pleasant building. It's not overly large inside, just cozy, and made of the same raw materials that most un-renovated country pubs are. The area is great for rambling. We've done a couple of walks here on arriving, returning to the pub for our post-exertion refreshments. They carry several rotating Hook Norton ales, of course, all of which I find are worth a sample. The menu is broad and always tasty, and popular enough that they often sell out, so go fro lunch early. Illustrative story: The last time at the Pear Tree, we saw Hooky Pie on the menu. We asked what that was, and learned that it's locally-made beef and ale pie. It was, according to the woman behind the bar, very popular, and they usually sell out of it quite quickly. It certainly sounded like an appropriately hearty meal for a December day by an open fire. Then the couple at the table next to us each received that very dish, and the deal was sealed: it was huge, meaty, and tasty-looking. Three of our group of four ordered the Hooky Pie. A few minutes later the bartender came back with bad news: only two portions of pie left. One of the girls took one for the team and ordered fish pie instead. When our food finally arrived, it was as tasty as promised. Delicious. Thick. Oozing gravy. Huge chunks of beef, too, not a ground-up mush. Luckily, the fish pie was just as delicious an alternative for those that took it. A family with three kids came in just as we were finishing and tried to order the Hooky Pie. Sorry, the bartender said, we're all out. Without a pause, she pointed at our table and said, They took the last pies. Five pairs of hungry eyes glared at us from across the pub. We cast our eyes downwards and finished our pints.

We weren't sure what to expect on Sunday afternoon in Chipping Norton since most places are closed or close early on Sundays. We started with the Baked Camembert with rustic bread and an apple chutney. This was a great starter to share with a couple folks and enjoy with wine or a draft beer. For our entrees we chose the Sunday roast and the chicken and leek pie. I realize that England has gotten some bad rap in the past about their food not tasting good, which this place disproves. The roast was cooked to rare and was accompanied by roasted potatoes and root vegetables. In addition, there was a side of steamed vegetables made of squash, leeks, and kale. The Yorkshire pudding was a nice addition to the meal. The chicken and leek pie had the same steamed vegetables as well as mashed potatoes and gravy. The pie was very tasty. We also got the cauliflower and cheese bake. It was a side large enough to share. The rum cake was great at the end. The chef is from Jamaica and very talented and the service here is impeccable. We will probably be back again before we leave in a couple days to try the rabbit or something else.

Like many other pubs we have seen it change hands many-a-time. The current owners have made the most changes. The pub now consists of basically the old traditional main building pub, and a gastro restuarant converted from a barn, now attached, which is quite upmarket. The pub itself is small but lovely, all you'd expect from a traditionally country village pub is there, a roaring oak fire and alike! The bar is straight ahead when you go in, but be careful to mind you're head, a beam there is VERY low!, I've often found this out to my peril. The Drinks are the standard good quality lagers and bitters, with occasional local beers given a stint at the bar. The Restaurant section is really just for your upmarket consumer, do not expect traditional cheap pub grub here At least this is what we found at our last visit. The Standard and atmosphere are nevertheless high at the Three Conies. Easy to get to aswell, just off the B road from Banbury to Northampton. Highly Recommended.

We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.
