We visited this restaurant / pub early May and had an good meal and experience. At that time we saw, advertised on the table a 'gourmet' night on the 3rd June. As this is my wifes birthday we decided to book (with our friends). We waited the month and excitedly arrived on Friday night for a gourmet night with wine tasting. Everything started well, our table was booked and we could put our pre-dinner drinks on the table a good start! The venue was aware of my wife turning another year older and marked our table with some nice balloons again a nice little touch with some attention to detail. We had time for a couple of drinks before dinner the Landlord (Timothy Taylors) and Aspell Cider being well regarded by all in our party. We sat for dinner relatively promptly at 19:30 to be served a small amuse bouche a small herb jelly, it was OK. Starter followed, Ham hock terrine which is one of the standard menu items. It was good though and a decent size of portion ensured a good start. The wine chosen by our host was very good. It would have been nice to have had a bread basket or some such with these but that's a minor detail. The main course followed a Guinea fowl leg, with some vegetables. The veg was OK, the carrots of particular note. However the Guinea fowl was over cooked, not by much but at £45 a head you would expect it to be cooked to perfection. The red wine chosen for this course was a nice Rioja Gran Reserva. The final course, was a disappointing cake and ice cream. The madeira wine choice was pleasant but did not really fill any of the table with the 'more please' reaction. So, what was the problem, and why would I not return to or recommend this venue? The service. At the beginning of our meal, 2 of the 4 diners at the table had empty glasses, we had to ask a waitress to take an order. We ordered a jug of tap water, to be told the venue do not serve tap water at the tables because the tap water they have is of too low quality but if we wanted tap water we could go to the bathroom and fill paper cups. The table alternative is a £2 per bottle filtered water. So tap water, which is filtered. The bottle volume was not clearly advertised, but it was less than 4 standard (about 250ml) pub glasses (so probably 750ml or so). Filtered water for more than the price of petrol per litre, really? When we complained to the landlady about this, we were rather rudely treated. She explained that her customers didn't expect to drink tap water from jugs. As her customer I can assure her I do. I really do not expect to be ripped off £2 per bottle for tap water which has been filtered. Later, as I asked at the bar for a glass to fill in the toilet, I was taken outside by the landlord and threatened, I should add, the venue offer a very good 'lift home for diners' service, the landlord threatened to not do this for our party of 4. Additionally he pointed out that we should be happy to buy the water because he'd put balloons on the table which cost £1 each The next morning my wife noticed some bruises on my arm, which whilst I can not be sure was caused by his handling me, wasn't there before we went to the venue. In all, an OK meal, which was ruined by poor service. At over £50 a head including drinks, this should have been outstanding. In March this year, we ate at Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons I'm pretty sure they didn't send their customers to the toilet to fetch some tap water, jugs of water where floating about to fill water glasses without request read more
