As such, I had an unusually long time to contemplate what Appalachian-Pakistani fusion might taste like. Amazing, as it turns out. Their signature vegetarian dish is a hearty lentil stew delivered over mashed potatoes. I got my greens in by adding pickled collard greens and a seasonal ramp chutney. I was greeted with a resplendent mix of warm and savory flavors that was hard to stop eating. Their chai was a bit sweet and had an interesting spice blend. Availability is very limited, with both a small menu and some options running out towards the end of the day, bearing in mind that they close early. As a full restaurant, it wouldn't measure up. Maybe they'll get there some day. As it is, I would suggest coming early. There are some good restaurants in Abingdon, but you won't find food like this anywhere else.

We ordered more food than we could eat because living out-of-state, we knew it would be our last chance for a long while. Everything we ordered (another Daal Me Up, Saag with Grits, and Curry Me Down South) was AMAZING! The idea to marry Indian and Southern cuisines is genius and works so well. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Not only is this place top-notch for the area, it is excellent for any area! I hope to be able to recreate some of their wonderful dishes at home until we are in Southwest Virginia again!

Over the past several years I have only ordered takeout and I am never disappointed. The food is always hot and fresh and prepared exactly as I ask. There is one dish I order with a modification and they haven't gotten it wrong in 30 years. The primary reason I keep returning is taste. I often find that Chinese restaurant food has an unusual taste that I do not like. The food at Shanghai does not have this taste. She brought my drink and then some 10 minutes later brought besties's tea after we tracked her down. They had typical Chinese restaurant fair on the menu. The restaurant wasn't super busy when we got there. There weren't a lot of people seated outside. It appeared. They had only three people running food and taking orders. A fair amount of gas did show up after us and probably got their food. We had to track somebody down as there was some delay in them actually pulling our ticket to go make our food after we had ordered via the QR code of the table. This was a bit disappointing. I can only chalk it up to having inexperienced help during the festival. When ordering on the app, you can make modifications to just about any dish. Bestie did order something called ants on a log - it was a vermicelli rice noodle dish. Came out completely wrong without any of the extra she ordered. I ordered a simple chicken and broccoli. Chicken had an odd texture and Bestie's dish had chicken too and she thought it was a little odd as well. She did get a new order made when we saw her order was wrong. We brought it to one of the waiters's attention and they made her a fresh order and that came out very quickly. Which we did appreciate. We were served on paper plates, which I can only assume was for the festival. There was live music playing in the front room of the restaurant which could be heard throughout. I like most food but prefer rice plated meals over soups. I ordered the Yummy Chicken at a 6 spice level. Initially I thought about ordering an extra side of rice but at the end of the meal it was the perfect serving for me. You could split the meal with an extra side of rice if you wanted a lighter lunch. The chicken has a crispness to its outside while still being juicy, followed by a tangy and delicious sauce. Garnished with nuts. Some peppers and onions I believe but simple and well executed. If you enjoy a spicy meal, I would say 6 is the highest I go before you experiance less of the flavor. I'll try an 8 next time but 6 left me happy with the spicy, while not sweating profusely. I didn't feel the need to continuously go to my drink which allowed me to enjoy the flavor while still experiancing that burn. A slice of lime came on the side which I used to garnish. They offered recommendations, and the chef actually visited our table to ask how each meal was, even asking if my spice level was okay (they recommended not going over a 5, I chose 6 knowing I am a fan of spicy). The chef also explained how he cooked the chicken when asked. Meal came with silverware and chopsticks. Atmosphere: Very clean. 1st thing I noticed was a clean dining area and maintained tables. Tables were cleared when people left promptly and there is a good spread between high tables, tables, and bar seating. Lighting used natural light from windows, they have overhead lighting as well. No fluorescent lighting that I saw, soft white lights and some colored lights. Where they could improve: I don't believe there was much that needed to be improved on. They seem like they have a good thing going and know what restaurant they want to run. Food was phenomenal, customer service was more friendly and welcoming than any restaurant i've been to lately. They seemed like they wanted to be there and welcomed us there. I don't see this often anymore. Restaurant was in good shape, clean, with good water. Some of the tables were from a "Beef o Brady's" so they could be re-finished or have a table cloth thrown over but that doesn't concern me. I would recommend and will be returning.
