My husband and I arrived around 6pm. The vibe of the gentleman taking your order is just tell me your order... there is ample food available being its hand served buffet not made on demand. The food here is great however there is such a thing as TOO MUCH RICE. This establishment will pile on rice and give you 3 oxtails. And it's like warm. read more

They give 3 piece of oxtail that are straight BONES!! They stingy with the meat and even cucumber. They slice 2 tomatoes and one cucumber like fam... give me atleast 2 of each... and give me meat NOT bones.. $16 wasn't worth it read more

You get so much food for what you pay for. I got my food and ate there. The staff was extremely friendly. I had potato salad, rice, yuca, and oxtail. My stepson got stewed chicken, and my husband got stewed beef. Everything was amazing. Definitely returning! read more

Why's this place listed as Mexican?! I came here as Mei Mei Chinese restaurant next door is closed on Mondays. But, what a great find in the middle of 'not-quite-sure' NJ. Helpful service and bit portions in this Puerto Rican restaurant. I loved my stewed pork chunks and the extra fatty bit that the lady piled into my takeout box. The rice, plantations and potatoey vegetable were all perfect. Choose from oxtail, beef, chicken and pork from the hot plates. Would come here every week if I was nearby! read more

Have been here multiple times for take out and the food is solid each and every time. There is no menu so you pick what is there, they have some soup options in the back that is excellent as well. I still don't know how much each platter is but no more than $8 for a big box with rice , meat, maduro, and salad. They also have fresh juice sometimes too. Restaurant isn't big for a group-maybe 12 seats? It's more of a Carribbean/Dominican place. People are friendly and most speak English, never had problem when ordering in English. read more

Wanted to try authentic Puerto Rican food as I like a lot of seasoning and a little spicy so we google/yelped and came upon this place. The stewed chicken and yellow rice =fresh and delicious but def not spicy which my husband appreciated,, empanadas =freshly made, crispy dough and huge also no spice, the mofungo=left me confused. It was tasteless with large chunks of what seemed to be beef jerky? I think I ordered wrong or something. Also, the location seems to be mostly for take out but they do have a few tables, it's too far for us to do takeout. This is the first place I've eaten since moving to NJ that I actually got excited about. The portions are big, the food is delicious, the price is right, and it doesn't take more than 20 minutes to drive there! It's a bit confusing when I first went in because there wasn't a menu, and they just ask you what you want but there are no labels for the food. But the guy was nice and just told me what everything was. I got a huge plate with red rice, chicken in a delicious gravy, beans, a few pieces of plantains, and some potato salad. The rice was flavorful and the chicken moist, tender, and easy to get off the bone. I was stuffed and couldn't finish everything. My friend ordered the pork with everything else the same. The pork was good, but maybe a bit too salty for his taste. In total the two dishes came out to be.... are you ready for it?.... $14! But they only take cash, no ATM or credit cards just FYI. The place is small, but clean, and is in a plaza with a huge parking lot. Easy parking is always a plus. Anyways, I'm planning on taking my other friend here to eat too. The personality of the female that took care of me is lacking. I tried to converse with her and she paid me no mind. I'm disgusted by the way I was treated. It was never like this before. They need to really let the workers know to be nice to customers. We are the reason why they are open. What's the point t of having good food if you don't get treated fairly. Welcome to the islands!!! I drove 15 minutes and wasn't disappointed. Wasn't a crowd Saturday at 4 pm. The food authentic pr/dr complete with con con. I am very happy to have found this place because some people think that all Spanish is the same and it's not. I live in the suburbs but mainly with South American (Peruvian) people. I truly enjoyed everything I tried here. The portion sizes are good, and the price is just right. The only bad thing is no signs for pricing or labels of what food items are sometimes you have to wait for items to be replenished but that's a positive negative always fresh food.credit card minimum $10 staff nice and friendly but language could be a barrier. Great food, I order the same thing every time, but depending on who serves me I get different prices. It would be nice if prices were posted. Lately I've just been passing it by because I feel "some type of way" paying such a varied amounts for the same thing. I don't speak Spanish so I can't argue much. I will follow up with receipts so you can see the varied prices I am charged. Honesty, Quality and consistency is key. read more

First of all this is NOT MEXICAN. Not even close. This is Puerto Rican / Dominican cuisine. They have arroz con habichuelas, pernil, mangu, ensalada de bacalao among other dishes I remember eating as a child. The food is definitely authentic and delicious. A little on the salty side but that's just how I remember it anyway. Not healthy by any means LOL but latin comfort food at it's best. I'll definitely be back here with my family. read more

Second day in a row eating puerto rican food in New Brucswick. The first reviewer is right, it's definitely not Mexican. I have been here many times, even more often than La Poncena. That's because the food is better (not that La Poncena is bad) bigger portions, more variety and just as cheap. Me and a friend went for lunch. He had the steak and onions with yuca and a salad, I had roast pork (pernil), yellow rice, pink beans, sweet plaintains and salad. I always ask them to put the juices from the steak and onions on my rice and beans even if I'm not getting steak and onions because it adds such a nice flavor to the rice. Food was very good as usual. Each of us had a soda and left there fully satisfied on the verge of stuffed all for $16.00. HIghly recommended if you want the taste of home cooked puerto rican food. I know because my wife and mother in law are puerto rican and this food is just as good as theirs. read more

Excellent place for Dominican food, whether it be takeout or dine in. My favorite is the stew chicken because they give me plenty of chicken and no loose bones in the stew. You can get their lunch special every day at any time, I believe it's $8. I also get their passion fruit juice (jugó de parcha) to go with my meal. Their empanadas are tasty too, definitely greasy, but what empanada isn't? They have a wide variety of Dominican dishes, and the trays are always full and fresh. This is my go to spot for Dominican food, and the service is always friendly and quick. I can't ask for better service. read more

I went here with my mom 2 days ago for takeout, and we loved it! TONS of food (took me two days to eat) that cost us $11 each because we got two types of meat each. I got the fish (bacalao), which I liked more than the goat meat. Mom got the oxtail and really liked it. We both had the rice and beans, but I'm sure the yellow rice is equally delicious (I'm going to get that next time). The potato salad was okay; I'd get it again, but I'm not sure that I really liked it. I think if it was separate from the rice and meat, it might be a little better. Anyways, try this place. Wow. Great tasting food. Loses one star for atmosphere and sometimes being too crowded at the counter, it's a take out spot in a rundown looking strip mall. However the combo plates are a great price and delicious. Get the pork. Get a chicken empanada they are deep fried, really flavorful and delicious. Go here for pick up. read more

I was in the area and was in the mood for some Spanish food so I checked out Yelp and found this little treasure. I ordered the stewed chicken over yellow rice with a side of plantains. It was absolutely delicious and the portion was plentiful. The lady working the counter was very helpful and speaks both Spanish and English. The food is served cafeteria style so you essentially just pick out what you want. The restaurant is very clean and so are the bathrooms. Can't wait to visit here again. BTW, this is Puerto Rica cuisine. read more

I came here with my bf and we paid 18 dollars for two huge plates and two drinks. Even though it was already prepared and served cafeteria style, the food was hot and tasted fresh. Still he was warm, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about his restaurant, taking the time to walk us through the menu and checking in throughout the meal without ever hovering. Luca's has a partial liquor license, offering a modest wine selection but is otherwise being BYOB. As we were told with a smile, they're much more interested in what's ON your plate than what's IN your glass. We started with two excellent appetizers. The arancini, already a family favorite, were crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and disappeared from the table faster than anyone was willing to admit. The Polpette, Luca's signature meatballs with pine nuts and raisins, certainly earned the praise they've received from NJ.com as some of the best in the state. Even if raisins in meatballs sound unusual, trust the process. The restaurant proudly calls itself "A Taste of Ischia," the beautiful volcanic island in the Bay of Naples, and the seafood absolutely lives up to that promise. My squid ink pasta with octopus (the Polypus) was outstanding, with perfectly tender octopus and beautifully balanced flavors. The scallops were buttery, sweet, and cooked to perfection, while the Ischia -- loaded with mussels, clams, and calamari -- was every seafood lover's dream. The rest of the menu proved just as impressive. The Pappardelle, featuring burrata and a rich Bolognese sauce, was a huge hit, while the Romolo, a comforting combination of chicken, pasta, bacon, and sauce, was another winner that had no leftovers to speak of. If you somehow still have room after dinner, Luca's offers a nice assortment of gelato. But do yourself one favor: don't leave without ordering a cappuccino. Rich, foamy, and expertly made, it's the perfect finale to a memorable meal. If you find yourself in Somerset, just a few turns off Routes 287 or 1, make the stop. You'll be greeted by a wonderful staff, treated to outstanding food, and very likely leave wondering how a restaurant this good has been hiding in a strip mall all along.
