I was traveling from Twin Cities to Duluth, and looking for that "special" local diner or supper club - something different but wholesome - a unique spot filled with a hometown feeling and flavor.
Google found The Brickyard, and am I ever glad - it was a home run, just 10 minutes off 35W on the way to Duluth, or Hwy 23 for those of you who are out taking a hike at Banning State Park and work up an appetite!
The owner is also the chef, everything is home made, with classic home cooking family recipes gathered over the generations. The menu is simple, the food phenomenal.
I had the walleye dinner which was fresh, with mashed potatoes made from scratch and slow cooked poultry gravy, and fresh green beans and a homemade dinner roll.
To top it all off, I had multiple choices of homemade pies, with crusts grandma would have cheated to call her own - the coconut pie was to die for.
The owner bought the place when he was only 25 yr old, his wife 8 months pregnant, and took a loan out for all he had, and turned it into a key cornerstone for the community.
Everyone was kind, friendly, and service was great. I felt I just visited friends in the country and ate at their house.
For all of us road warriors, it was s really a nice customer experience! And the food was just like mom's...actually, better, as she was a city girl!
Be sure to ask him about his children and grandchildren, and their dairy farm! Thank you! read more
