Shortly after our daughter was born we started the process of touring and evaluating the various…read moreprivate schools in Vegas. There is, in our opinion, no better option than the Meadows School. This is the kind of school that parents in Los Angeles, San Francisco or NYC have to jump through hoops to get their kids into, with massive politics and financial commitments at play. Yet in Vegas, many parents (including on our street) send their kids to Dawson due to its reputation for being easier and more artsy as they are terrified of the academic competitiveness of Meadows. If these same parents were in the Bay Area they'd be doing backflips trying to get their kids into the same sort of school there as Meadows. The campus is amazing. The curriculum is challenging. The kids are happy and very engaged in sports, theater, charity and other after-school activities. The parents are friendly and, especially the "Meadows Moms", work tirelessly to help out. Yes, your kid has to test into each school (K, middle, high). Great, we love a meritocracy rather than forced social promotion. And my daughter will have friends for life as she goes from K thru 12 here.

Meadows has changed, and prospective families should look closely at student and family…read moreretention--not just enrollment. The current sophomore class experienced a loss of several long-term students between freshman and sophomore year. For a small school like Meadows, that is meaningful. These were not families simply passing through; they had been part of the Meadows community for years. When several long-term families leave from a class in one year, it raises questions about their experience and what is happening within the school community. In my view, the current administration is a major concern. I have also seen changes in the sense of community, along with the loss of long-standing families, faculty, and traditions that once made Meadows special. What is most disappointing is seeing a school that once felt so stable and connected become a place where long-term families are no longer staying. That kind of change doesn't happen without a reason, and it deserves to be recognized.

I attended Speakers & Leaders for the first time today, and I got immense value from it. They are a…read morepart of Toastmasters International, an organization that "Empowers individuals to be effective communicators and leaders." They are a public speaking and leadership club. I could really tell that this club is a great thing to get involved with for developing both public speaking as well as leadership skills. When I walked into their meeting room, I was instantly greeted and welcomed by multiple club members with smiling and cheerful faces and that helped to put my nervousness at ease. The leader of their club, their president elect, made sure each of us guests introduced ourselves at the beginning of the meeting and this helped to make me feel a part of. Because this was the 5th Wednesday of the month, they had a special meeting planned differently than normal. Their meeting today they had planned out as something called "table topics," which is where we can practice impromptu speaking by answering a question that the Table Topics Master asks you. They had 4 rounds of about 4-6 questions each, calling on different people and making sure everyone had a chance to participate. I also got to participate in the impromptu speaking as a guest, which I was nervous to do, but they were all so friendly and welcoming I couldn't say no! They clapped after I gave my answer, and that helped to build up my confidence that what I shared was something of value and it made me more motivated to participate even more in the future. They had a club member with a role of picking a word of the day, who kept track of our filler words we said like ah-uhm-so-like-yaknow. This role helped me to realize that the filler word I commonly use and need to work on saying is "so." Their normal weekly meeting still includes table topics, but also prepared speeches from club members - which is a cool way to practice for that sales presentation, etc for work, or practice speaking skills for those who want to do it professionally or just improve their communication in general! I can see how they help people become more effective 1-1 communicators based on their 1-1 interactions with me. Their club leaders - President, Vice president of education, Vice President of membership, Vice President of public relations, treasurer, secretary, and sergeant at arms - are all club members who voluntarily put themselves in those spots, which is fantastic. I recommend anyone who wants to grow or develop as a leader - even with no leadership experience- to consider attending this organization as a guest, and consider becoming a member. If this club didn't interfere with my career nearly 100% of the time, I sure would be. Oh, and you can order food too (because they are meeting in a room at Egg Works) which was perfect because I was hungry lol. I got the Cobb salad there and enjoyed eating that as well.
