June 18, 2009 12:00pm -First meeting with Brian Scott.
August 13, 2009 - Called Brian Scott to schedule an appointment.
August 22, 2009 9:00am - Wife and I met with Brian Scott to go over the process and fees. We gave Brian a $1,500 first payment. We outlined what we envisioned and asked for his input. He measured the house inside and out. We were told that drawings would take roughly two weeks. We told Brian that in approximately two weeks we would be leaving for vacation. He said he would try and get them done.
September 12, 2009 - On Vacation for two weeks.
September 26, 2009 - Returned from vacation. No correspondence received from Brian Scott.
October 6, 2009 - Called Brian Scott and scheduled appointment.
October 10, 2009 10:00am - 7 Weeks / 49 days / 1 month & 18 days pass after our first meeting on August 22nd. Wife and I met with Brian Scott to review the conceptual set of drawings. We talked for more than one hour and before Brian left he took some more measurements. We paid Brian another $1,500.
October 15, 2009 7:24am - Received an e-mail from Brian. "Here are 4 different options for the bath, and a revision for the room due to the pools location. Let me know your thoughts. I'm working on the courtyard concept and fireplace." The revision for the room was due to a dimensional mistake by Brian. He drew the room too large. Brian volunteered to develop the courtyard and fireplace. We did not request it.
October 16, 2009 4:39pm - Acknowledged Brian's e-mail and responded with comments and questions.
October 29, 2009 4:49pm - Sent Brian an e-mail. I asked him how he was doing on the plans.
November 21, 2009 10:00am - Called Brian again and left a message.
November 21, 2009 10:44am - Sent Brian an e-mail stating that I had called him twice; asking if he was receiving our messages; and how the revisions were coming.
November 23, 2009 8:22pm - 5.5 Weeks / 38 Days / 1 month & 7 days pass after Brian sent his October 15th e-mail. After six (6) unanswered e-mail messages and two (2) phone calls, Brian responded via e-mail and sent three (3) 3D renderings and one (1) floor plan.
November 24, 2009 10:00pm - I acknowledged Brian's e-mail in an e-mail. My message to Brian read, "Got your message. Traveling to xxx tomorrow; returning on the 30th. Will be in touch."
December 21, 2009 9:41pm - I sent Brian an e-mail requesting that we meet in January. I also had some comments on the conceptual drawings.
December 22, 2009 3:22pm - Received message from Brian. "We can meet early in January to go over the items you listed. I'm attaching the plans as we have now to this email, because the only issue at the time was the bathroom in the rear, and we have put it where you asked. We have finished up the plans and they are ready for submittal to the city. The codes are changing substantially in January for the Energy Compliance (Title24) and we didn't want you to have to comply with the new roofing regulations, as they will be quite expensive. Call me at you earliest convenience and we can discuss a game plan."
We never authorized Brian to proceed with a construction set. We were led to believe that we were to review the conceptual set and get back to Brian with feedback.
December 23, 2009 10:44am - I called Brian Scott. Discussed last minute surprises in e-mail. Brian scheduled the meeting for December 29: 2009 9:00am.
December 29, 2009 8:50 - I arrived at HB Building department. Walked around; all doors locked. I called HB Building department. Got recorded message that their offices would be closed until January 4, 2010.
December 29, 2009 9:18am - I called Brian Scott's office. Brian answered. I told Brian that I was waiting for him in parking lot. He said he had our meeting at 10:00am on his calendar. I confronted Brian and said, "Come on Brian. You made this meeting. It was nine o'clock." I then told Brian that the building department was closed. He said that he would not have made the appointment if he knew that they were closed. To abbreviate what I said, I told Brian that our arrangement was not working out; I told him that the 'communication' was horrible; and that these kinds of things are inexcusable. I told him we wanted him to refund our money and we would go our separate ways. Brian told me that these jobs typically only take six weeks. Brian got irate, and was yelling at me. He said that I'd better read the contract; that the plans were his (he owned them); that on January 4th he was going to submit them to the city. I told him not to. He wouldn't let me talk and he would not listen to reason. Ultimately when he called me an "ignorant idiot" I hung up.
December 29, 2009 - I called the city of Seal Beach, Westminster and Fountain Valley Building departments - all were closed until January 4th. You would think that a seasoned "Architect" would know building department's schedules.
Bad Brian. read more
