You feel it the minute you walk on campus. The principal sets such a positive tone, and it trickles down through every part of the school. Teachers and staff know every child by name, and that kind of connection really sets Laurel Hall apart. Class sizes are small, which means our child gets personalized attention and are really seen not just another face in the crowd. It offers that classic, traditional school experience you might expect in a small town, but it's right here in the heart of the Valley. Yes, it's a private school and tuition isn't nothing- but compared to others in LA, it's very reasonable for what you get. We also weren't sure how we'd feel about the church affiliation going in, but honestly, it's light and sweet. Think Christmas songs and mostly the focus on kindness and compassion (with a little Jesus sprinkled in). Nothing heavy-handed at all. We feel so lucky to have found Laurel Hall. Our kids are thriving, and we genuinely love being part of this school community.

In any case, it's pretty unsettling, especially from a K-8 school. This isn't boilerplate language -- many of the bullet points feel disturbingly specific. Wesley made headlines a few years ago when they arranged for their staff to cut the line and get Covid vaccines in 2021 before they were eligible. Prospective parents might want to think twice about this school.

Yesterday, my husband and I were lucky enough to attend their prospective parent open house and to say I was impressed would be an understatement. The morning began by having us sit in on their twice weekly school assembly (called "Community"). It hit to the heart of what it means to be in a community! It was inspiring. Completely led by the students themselves, yesterday's assembly was entirely run by the second graders! What a joy! It really set the stage for what proved to be a very enjoyable morning. Everyone we met made us feel instantly at home...the staff, the parents, the security team who helped us find a parking spot and especially the two 6th graders who gave my husband and I our own special "VIP" tour! Their engagement and passion for sharing their experiences truly warmed our hearts. We appreciated hearing from so many staff members who are clearly committed to providing the most nurturing educational experience for the students. We know the students at Wesley are in very capable hands.

Fast-forward to 2002, I have three kids attending here. They attend from K thru 5. and one only K thru 3. Had a number of great teachers, Mr.Mamian and Mr Sartin come to mind. There was no visible gang presence and believe me I looked! No graffiti in the bathrooms or on the lunch tables and benches, never saw any half-pint cholos hanging around after school. Unlike other schools this one had the best food and it was delicious, I remember racing with my friends to see who can get the best food first. The after school program was always super fun to be in. Playing with my friends for hours while making memories with them. Even tho I was always late to school I still had fun. The teachers were the best at making learning easy. I remember my 4th grade teacher telling me how smart I was even though I didn't have that much confidence she definitely help me with it and with my learning. My favorite subject in her class was ELA but also math. I only liked math if we were doing fractions because that was my favorite thing to learn in math. She made learning in her class easy and I love her way of teaching. Even though I didn't act like I was interested I definitely was. She helped me learn a lot of thing and I'm very grateful.

Mrs. Allagh should have been the first teacher to go and maybe this school would be running longer. The worst "teacher" (not sure if she's even qualified highly doubt it) and human I have had the displeasure of being around. I cannot fathom how she got hired. Truly an awful person not just to the kids but parents as well! This school deserves what's coming to it and I do not feel bad for the teachers or principal. I never interacted with other staff but they seemed bearable. If you enroll your child in a school and see "Mrs. Allagh" as their teacher RUN and find another school. Any place willing to hire someone like that is not a place you want to be involved in. I changed my child's school 3 months ago and is flying through the roof. Doing so much better! Best decision I have ever made. I hope their staff sees this since they never felt the need to contact me back after multiple attempts of me trying to reach out to them. I don't want to categorize all the staff into the few negligent and disgusting ones I have witnessed within the school so I will leave it at that. AVOID THE PRINCIPAL AND MRS. ALLAGH AT ALL COSTS!

Organization clearly isn't a priority here. The leadership is even worse. The principal appears totally disconnected from students and staff, showing zero interest in whether anyone is actually learning or even comfortable. Rumors of bizarre behavior aside, the overall vibe is wildly unprofessional. When students feel more confused, stressed, and ignored after interacting with administration, that's a massive failure of leadership. The environment is unpleasant, morale is low, and basic standards of professionalism seem optional. Instead of focusing on student success, the administration seems wrapped up in its own strange priorities. It's hard to learn in a place where students don't feel respected or taken seriously. If you care about education, structure, or basic competence, I'd strongly recommend looking literally anywhere else.

My daughter has been involved in multiple incidents at this school, and the pattern is deeply concerning. Most recently, another student pulled a chair out from under her, causing her to fall. She was humiliated and could have been seriously injured. The consequence? Being benched during lunch and sent to another class. That response is completely inadequate given the seriousness of the incident. Last year, my daughter broke her hand at school. Her teacher failed to communicate her medical restrictions to the nurse, and I later received a call because my daughter was participating in activities she should not have been doing. That is a major breakdown in responsibility and communication. In another incident, the assistant principal allowed my daughter to be present during a conversation involving another student discussing harming himself or others. There was no regard for the emotional impact this could have on a child. I was left to deal with the aftermath at home. What is especially concerning is the leadership of the principal, Mr. Yau. Based on my experience, there is a clear lack of urgency, accountability, and empathy when serious safety concerns are raised. When I spoke to him while upset about my child's well-being, his tone came across as dismissive, and I did not feel heard or taken seriously. At this point, this is not about isolated incidents it reflects a broader issue with leadership and how student safety is prioritized. Parents should not have to fight this hard to ensure their child is safe. This situation needs to be taken seriously, and changes need to be made.

But as a Black family, our list was more layered with the awakening that the world witnessed. The pandemic added additional complexity to our anxiety, but Oakwood has been a dream come true for our family in alleviating all worries we had. The community of families is kind and down-to-earth. The teachers are responsive and committed. This school is well-run and culturally in tune, and everyone goes above and beyond. My son needed to be picked up one day early from school and was unhappy about leaving friends mid-morning. That evening, I got a call from his teacher offering to come to our house (pretty far away) to bring him his items to ensure he was okay (Completely Unnecessary, but the offer meant the world and demonstrated how much she cared.) Honestly, the only complaint is that our son wants to stay at school way too long and has asked us to "fall back." This week, the only tears were when we picked him up ON TIME instead of allowing him to go to after-care! His maturity and growth spurt are selfishly bittersweet, but I am proud to have a front-row seat in watching his love of learning cemented on these grounds. It is a magical, empowering place that has already been the fabric of countless unforgettable memories.
