The homework load can be overwhelming at times but there is a terrific support network to ensure that students stay on track. Our son has made great friends and loves his teachers. The academics are top notch. For the second consecutive year, The Science Academy was the number one school in the state of California with the highest scores among grades 6 through 8 in English, math and the English and math combination. For kids who love math and science and are up for the challenge, this is one of the best school options in LA.

They were always happy to talk and answer questions and concerns. The administration was also approachable. This school had a lot of great teachers that really liked working with the students. They didn't have to say it because it showed in their actions. My son especially liked his English teacher. I forgot her name. But, she provided a variety of novels and interesting literature for him to read. One of the books was about the historical culture of the United States. I was so happy when my other son went to the neighboring school. However, it turned out to be too big and busy, and I did not feel like they were personally invested in my son. I felt like the teachers were bullied into giving students grades that they did not earn, and students were encouraged to miss school anytime they wanted and claim that it was for "mental health" reasons. In the end, it turned out to be a blessing that my younger son had to go to his home school, East Valley High. The students have a sense of security and belonging at East Valley.

In any case, it's pretty unsettling, especially from a K-8 school. This isn't boilerplate language -- many of the bullet points feel disturbingly specific. Wesley made headlines a few years ago when they arranged for their staff to cut the line and get Covid vaccines in 2021 before they were eligible. The morning began by having us sit in on their twice weekly school assembly (called "Community"). It hit to the heart of what it means to be in a community! It was inspiring. Completely led by the students themselves, yesterday's assembly was entirely run by the second graders! What a joy! It really set the stage for what proved to be a very enjoyable morning. Everyone we met made us feel instantly at home...the staff, the parents, the security team who helped us find a parking spot and especially the two 6th graders who gave my husband and I our own special "VIP" tour! Their engagement and passion for sharing their experiences truly warmed our hearts. However, there has been some increase in the number of reported "almost incidents" outside the school. These "almost incidents" imply some safety concerns - e.g. almost had a child interact with a suspicious character, almost had a suspicious person pick-up a child...almost this, almost that. Lately, it seems to happen once a week. Which is why the police presence in the area helps a lot. Everywhere you go, there will always be suspicious and crazy people. Maybe the school lets parents know about "everything" for transparency and out of an abundance of caution. I still love this school and would recommend it to everyone. But as a Black family, our list was more layered with the awakening that the world witnessed. The pandemic added additional complexity to our anxiety, but Oakwood has been a dream come true for our family in alleviating all worries we had. The community of families is kind and down-to-earth. The teachers are responsive and committed. This school is well-run and culturally in tune, and everyone goes above and beyond. My son needed to be picked up one day early from school and was unhappy about leaving friends mid-morning. That evening, I got a call from his teacher offering to come to our house (pretty far away) to bring him his items to ensure he was okay (Completely Unnecessary, but the offer meant the world and demonstrated how much she cared.) Honestly, the only complaint is that our son wants to stay at school way too long and has asked us to "fall back." This week, the only tears were when we picked him up ON TIME instead of allowing him to go to after-care! His maturity and growth spurt are selfishly bittersweet, but I am proud to have a front-row seat in watching his love of learning cemented on these grounds. It is a magical, empowering place that has already been the fabric of countless unforgettable memories.
