Both employees were busy, but I received no acknowledgement. I found what I needed, I think. After they finished with their customer, I was able to make my purchase and the clerk was very friendly. There is a huge selection of both acoustic and electric guitars. If you are a Van Halen fan, you will see a lot of flying V's!

Wouldn't have been any big deal except the interaction on the phone asking the tech about it felt defensive, like he felt I was accusing him, which I wasn't. Then I got to the store and asked the guy at checkout and got the same feeling. Like my statement about not getting a text was an unreasonable point. Anyway, an awkward interaction, BUT I got it, and all is good. I think it's best when dealing with customers to just try hard to assume best intentions. I somehow ended up feeling defensive by just commenting that I didn't get a text. Like "why didn't I get a text?" That's innocent, right? I think so. In their position I would have said "I'm really sorry about that. We sent a text, and it didn't go through. I hope it wasn't too much inconvenience." Boom, done. Anyway, this all seems so silly as I'm saying it, but it's honestly annoying to feel like I'm a problem when I don't think I did anything wrong. There are a lot of options out there, and customer service is quite important to me. In fact, I'd spend more for it. It's a niggle, but its important to me to feel welcomed.

When I was setting up the guitar stands on Sunday the 6th I found out one of them was defective. On Monday the 7th of September I attempted to return one stand for a replacement but found out they were closed-it was Labor day. On the 8th of Sept I left town for 10 days, and returned on the 18th. On the 19th I went to Woodsongs in an attempt to have the defective guitar stand replaced. The nice young man behind the counter said he'd have to talk to the manager. The manager appeared and told me they had a strict 7 day return policy. I told him I tried to return the stand on Monday the 7th of September but they were closed, and that I'd been out of town since then. He told me that they are never closed and that I should have returned it before I left town. He didn't replace the stand which is not an expensive item, and treated me as though I was making an unreasonable request to have the stand replaced. He even told me that I broke it and it was my fault. As a retail outlet, the customer service is very poor and there is a air of arrogance about the shop. I'll never go back there again. I'll go to Louisville. I've been around music my whole life and usually musicians are good to other musicians. I don't get the impression this shop is run by players. Just a retail shop.

They have monthly: open mic, song circle, neurodivergent writers workshop, queer/trans writing workshop, "creative flow" workshop, queer grief support group, and a good number of one-off art classes/workshops (calligraphy, watercolor, etc). Regarding instrument selection, it ranges from piano to the typical strummers (guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukelele, bass), strings (cello, viola, violin), drums of all sorts, brass and woodwind, but then also voice and songwriting. You do need to own your own instrument for ongoing lessons, or rent one from elsewhere. There are also multiple instructors for almost every instrument, so you'll have options of different professionals to work with to develop your musical style; no having to find other studios if you don't resonate with the original instructor. Some instruments have more options than others (piano, for example, has tons!). Beyond that, they rent the space out to other queer event hosts and are quickly becoming one of the most happening and reliable 3rd spaces for queer humans in Longmont. I don't live close enough to drop by randomly, but everyone I've met at Butterscotch has been a kind, open and accepting human. Yelp wants me to talk about value... so, cost? A bunch of the workshops have a recommended donation but are pay what you can. The music lessons are the same cost for any instrument or instructor, based on time - $35 for a 30min lesson and $70 for a 55min lesson. As a commuting corporate professional I had a very hard time finding lesson times that worked for me. As a homeowner with many bills I don't have $200+ to spend on instrument lessons a month and wanted to do biweekly instead of weekly, which doesn't seem to fit the target audience for the studio, but I'm able to interact with the business and space in other ways that do work for me. A membership is available with the 2-person membership, not the 4-person option, being the most economical. $75/yr for "solo" $140/yr for "duo" ($70/per) - not related or roommates, you can sign up with anyone! $285/yr for "ensemble" ($71.25/per) - a 4 person membership for any 4 people, no requirement for relation or shared housing.

David Goodrich is a wonderful character. He doesn't always make it to the phone in time to pick it…read moreup, but he responds quickly to e-mails so I'd recommend that route for communication. And he is by appointment-only now, so don't just show up and expect to be seen. All that said, I doubt there's a better place anywhere to get your instrument repaired. He is extremely knowledgeable and downright passionate about violins, violas, and cellos. I own one of his violins and I take it in every year for a check-up. He holds it like a baby, taking his time to inspect everything, then hands it back and asks me to play something. Then he makes a face, takes the violin, and adjusts something before asking me to play again. Repeat for up to an hour. It's amazing how the tiniest tweakings make such a massive difference in sound quality! My violin has literally doubled in value since I bought it, and I'm sure it wouldn't have matured quite so magnificently without the yearly adjustments. Plus, it's really fun to get to try all sorts of new things- from strings to chin rests to bridges of varying heights- and then learn about why they change the way your violin plays.

He also advised me to write to the dealer from whom I'd purchased the instrument detailing the problems he'd solved. Based on his diagnosis and reputation, they sent me a check covering most of the repair cost. I still play this cello today, and it has been entirely free of problems. David routinely works on instruments worth 10-20x what mine cost; I would trust him with anything!
