I got three small dishes for lunch: asparagus with hollandaise (£5.50), three cheese croquettes (£5.50), pan-fried king scallops (£8). The place was really quiet and the food arrived quickly. The asparagus had a lot of hollandaise on it but was lovely, and the scallops were absolute heaven. I didn't love the croquettes though as I thought they were a little bland (especially as they have three kinds of cheese in them). I wasn't drinking but really need to come back for the beers as their list is very long and delicious sounding. This is super cool bar and can't wait to come back for another visit.

The drinks selection is really good - Thistly Cross cider, Blue Moon, Brooklyn, Innis & Gunn. There's wine, spirits, Aperol and Sam Smith's organic fruit beer. As for food, we shared the Nachos (£4.95) with Pulled Pork (+£1) and Bier Halle Big Share (£11.95), which came with BBQ wings, deep fried haggis and black pudding, deep fried pickles, sliced bratwurst and spicy sausages, 2 pretzels and sauces for dipping. The sharing board was beautifully plated and came with plenty of food to fill the both of us up. The only thing I wish they had was a cheese sauce dip for the pretzels, but everything else was excellent. The sausage were smoky, wings were saucy, and all the other fried items were nice and crispy. We did mainly come for the haggis and this was delicious, especially since it was fried so flavor was less overpowering as straight up haggis. Even the fried pickles were sweeter once fried. The nachos were also good, although we may have over ordered with this dish. Overall, great food and great beer --definitely a great stop for the night. They also offer a 2 for 1 deal for their pizza, which has so many options to choose from. If we were more hungry or had a bigger group, this would've been an amazing deal!

Not what I wanted, but who was I to complain? My guy ordered the one cider they had on tap and my sister in law ordered a cointreau and lemonade. Our friends ordered a lot of random beers and that was that. Not the coziest place ever, I couldn't see myself hanging out in here for more than a few drinks, but it did the job for what we were after. The booth we sat at felt quite small, but then again there were 7 of us crammed in to it. I'm sure we'll be back here, but I'll probably stick to cider next time.

They have Drygate's Apple Ale which I was pretty excited about, its around £4.50 a bottle which I feel like might be a bit pricey but hey ho. The crowd was generally a bit older - say between 40s and 60s as well as a few rowdy groups clearly out for a big big night. The decor in here isn't all that appealing with a strange kind of retro 50s vibe and some football memorabilia around the place. The lighting was also pretty bright for 8pm on a Saturday so gave it much more of a cafe than bar vibe. I'm not saying I wouldn't go back because the staff are friendly, we managed to get a seat and it was a good place to have a drink. But I'm not going to rush there and I don't know that it would come to mind if someone asked me where to go for a drink in Merchant City.

That's exactly what we got. We walked to the Chip after visiting the relatively nearby Kelvingrove Museum. It's in a not-too-touristy area with tons of nearby restaurant options and hidden in a little alley (or "close") off Byres Road. There are multiple "venues" within Ubiquitous Chip - 2 bars (The Corner and The Wee...) We ended up at the Wee ahead of our reservation time, and the bartender guided us well with a dram after asking for something he thought was great that we'd have a more difficult time getting back in the States. (Ledaig). Both bars were pretty packed, so we wandered back and forth between the 2 until a spot finally opened at the Wee Pub. Our reservation was for the main dining room (not the Brasserie). There was a lot for us to enjoy as vegetarians. We rolled our own tasting menu with a plate of Scottish cheeses (typically a dessert item on Scottish menus, but we stand by the legitimacy of cheese for dinner). All 5 cheeses were vegetarian (ie no rennet) and served with a nice chutney and 2 different types of in-house-made crackers. It was delightful. We also had the BBQ Carrots dish...it's two carrot chunks, soft-cooked, charred on the outside, served on a delicious bed of sauces with a lovely Indian curry vibe. We got a salad with honey mustard dressing, fennel and shaved celery...it was very fresh and a nice counterpoint to the cheese and carrots. We also got potatoes, which were topped with creme fresh and light herbs. The potatoes were a little dry and light on flavor, but dipped in the creme and also in the leftover sauce from the carrots dish, they did the job. Service was stellar and friendly. Dining in the main restaurant makes you feel like you're outside. There are live plants everywhere, and a ceiling made up of windows like a greenhouse. You can see the brasserie, the more casual restaurant, on the second level (though, honestly, the main restaurant didn't feel unnecessarily stuffy like some fine dining restaurants. This was the perfect place for us to have a final meal in Scotland with plenty of food, drink and friendly service that left the perfect taste in our mouths.

I went back last week, and again had a really nice meal, with great service. I made the most of the 5pm deal - 2 courses for £12.95. The portion size was substantial and a really tasty dish. The chicken sate burger was spot on, smothered in sate sauce and sandwiched between a soft brioche bun. The chilli chips coupled with the sweet chilli dipping sauce were a perfect combo. The Katsu Curry unfortunately came with a really tiny amount of sauce to accompany the chicken, which was a bit of a let down. Although slow to start, the food was good and the staff were very friendly and chatty. Plus, we used a 50% off voucher so we grabbed a really good deal for the meal and service. Not neglecting Whisky across a Cocktail list, Elevenses a smoky Citrus masterpiece, the "wee" portion of Haggis is perfect for one with four-bites of liberally spiced Offal alongside equal size quenelles of Potatoes and Rutabaga. It's not a million miles away from JD and his crew, with a familiar layout and menu with reasonable drinks prices as well as with the food, it's a sensible enough place to start out your night. As has been mentioned elsewhere though, it can get a bit hostile and ugly in the evening time, presumably due to a combination of cheap alcohol and its location near Glasgow Central with folk rushing home on the last train knocking them back rapid style before the break of 11pm. This might or might not be an accurate assumption, but given the Sauchiehall Street branch doesn't seem to be as rowdy, I will happily believe that a significant proportion of the variance accounted for here is due to the location, rather than the alcohol. The prices are the same up on Sauchiehall Street, but located near pricier bars and removed from a nearby train station. Either I like to simplify the world to small measurable phenomena or I am really good at making valid world weary observations. Or maybe it's somewhere in between.
