Traditionally Sundays are for brunch and Bloody Marys. This past Sunday I decided to go Zen and…read moretake a 4PM Gentle Yoga class at Energy Movement Center in downtown Peekskill. It's a small studio with two yoga/workout rooms but has a HUGE community feel. Drop in class are $20 but they offer tons of packages from class cards to full membership. Besides yoga they offer Pilates, tai chi, cardio, personal training and specialized workshops/events. Gentle Yoga @4PM on Sunday is led by Liz Lazo who added a little bit of Zen via starting with meditation (a bit more than breath in/out) before guiding us through the gentle yoga practice. It was a small class just 2 people so she tailored the class to our needs (back/hips). She is excellent but since she's also my cousin I will list her bio not written by me! Liz Lazo has been practicing yoga for over 13 years and has received instruction in Hatha, Iyengar, Kripalu & Vinyasa styles. She earned her 200 Hour Vinyasa Teacher Training certificate through Living Yoga with Liz Schulman and Richard Villella in March 2013. Liz is a registered member of Yoga Alliance. In addition, she attained the First Degree of Reiki through Ginny Mackles in March 2011 and applies the principles to her work as a yoga student and instructor. Related or not she's good enough to get me to give up my Sunday Bloodys!

I was in town in Peekskill just visiting, and thought I'd look for a yoga class. Found this listing on yelp, but webpage link is for something else. Guess I won't be going to yoga then. Not going to waste my time as I've no idea 'where' to go or how to find their website and list of classes....

I left feeling like I moved my body and had a solid workout- with lots of good energy for the rest of my week. I have an Equinox membership- so I'm used to taking group classes- but always worry I'm going to hurt myself. This just felt so great for my body! I would highly recommend trying a class!

I started out as beginning pilates student having only taken one discouraging mat class before and became a devoted regular even throughout my entire pregnancy. The classes are small, typically more than 6-8 students and so you get very individual attention. Lisa is a great teacher, patient, precise in her direction, always looking to see whether you're exhibiting correct form. Also I learned about diastasis which is when your stomach muscles split while pregnant. Thanks to Lisa I managed to avoid that fate. Beyond the great instruction, I've found her classes to be a real community. I've had such great support and encouragement from other classmates, especially the moms in the class. It was like they were rooting for me all the way to have a great pregnancy experience. Lisa also runs potlucks and clothing swaps among her students and in general just makes the atmosphere fun and more than just about exercise.
