We had a recent team outing at Breakout Games, and had a lovely time! We had 8 total co-workers in the room and did the Kidnapping 2 room! The space itself is minimal, with a small lobby to wait before entering your room! You are greeted by a game master who takes you to your room, sets you up, and makes sure you knew all the rules. Our game master was Mariam and she was very friendly. I wouldn't recommend a group larger than 8 for this specific room, as it was a bit tight and it's hard for that many people to stay engaged in the room's puzzles. The room wasn't as soundproof as I would have liked, as you could sometimes hear the other rooms in the facility which took you out of the story line. The puzzles were appropriately challenging, and the room was well set up. While the room might sound like a horror film, nothing about it was actually scary, so you can assure any hesitant guests that it won't terrify them! Overall, a really solid escape room location if you're into that sort of thing! Looking forward to returning to do another room soon! read more

I moved here from California in 2020 and had quite a few experiences with Escape Room. Today my group, for "staff development" decided to do the Bomb Squad. It was well thought out and the puzzles/clues were diverse that success relied on all of our strengths. The first puzzle took us the longest but once the first lock was open it went rather quickly, especially when we were able to break apart the various tasks. While our room was a single room, there were plenty of things to solve. I have been in large, multi room escape rooms, and single rooms like this one and they both have their own benefits. For an hour long endeavor (we completed it in just over 43 minutes), it was perfect. It's really hard to share without sharing spoilers ... Our host was fantastic. At one point he did interject that only one person needed to do a task instead of all of us at the same time (think the game twister, haha)... but he gave very little commentary throughout, nor did we ask for any hints. Fun experience and staff were really great! The waiver is a little unnerving but rest assured, the tamer experience was fun for us.

We had Maddie as our game master, she was absolutely incredible! About $150 for the five of us and totally worth it. We barely made it out but my friends and I agreed the room was paced really well! We had a group of six with mix ages between 30-95 and did the Bomb Squad theme room. Will was our game master and we could not have been more grateful to have someone so patient and helpful. We had a lot of trouble due to the mixture of individual difficulties (ie. hard of hearing, not the best vision, etc) but we were able to finish and win the room in under the allotted 60 minutes. We'll definitely be back again in the future to try the Casino and Island rooms Will recommended. read more

Had a lot of fun as it was my first escape the room. We played in the hostage room where we were blindfolded and handcuffed. I'd have to say, my expectations of excitement/fear were left a bit unsatisfied upon entering the room. A little intense music or something may have helped a bit. :p it was still fun, but in my mind, I had imagined it to be a bit more intense. I haven't been to other escape the rooms yet, but from word of mouth and from some trailers of other places I've seen, it seems like other escape the rooms could be bigger (two rooms instead of just one) or more technologically advanced. This may be normal for all escape the rooms, but I didn't love how there wasn't a system for when we could ask for hints. If we had just asked for help earlier instead of later, we may have been able to escape (we were one clue behind when time was up). Also, the clues weren't too technologically advanced, being our first time, we didn't know what we were supposed to touch and what we weren't. We may have tampered with some of the clues unknowingly, and that made it hard for us to find the correct answers. This isn't really a defense for losing (ha), but I think a few things could be worked out. And I'd imagine some other places have worked out a few other kinks already. Still had a blast and don't even know if other places can live up to the expectations that I imagined. read more

My daughter and a few of her friends went here for her 13th Birthday. They were planning on doing Island Escape and were really excited. A few minutes passed our time someone came and said that the Game Master wasn't here, so we either had to reschedule or do Mystery Mansion. It was a little upsetting, but the girls decided to do Mystery Mansion, and they had so much fun! The clues were perfectly challenging for their age and the hints they got were very helpful. They are planning to come and do Island Escape. The owner apologized and said he would give us a discount, but I haven't received it yet. Overall, the escape rooms themselves are great and so much fun, but their staffing, system, and communication are just okay, I think they could improve it. read more

I have to be honest. When I first heard we were doing an Escape Room activity as a team building event I was automatically thinking it might be kinda lame. But, this was really fun. When you arrive you'll have to sign some waivers. Don't let that scare you. It's not like this is a ride or something like that. Although, if you can't handle small spaces this might trigger you a little bit. There were seven of us and I felt like that was a good group. Or, maybe the group was just good! We were prepped for what to expect by R2D2, not the real one, but that was the name of the attendant that helped us. I felt her instructions were clear and thorough. She was also available if we needed clues. I felt like her clues were helpful without completely giving us the answer. I won't give details on our "escape", but we had a blast! We "escaped" in slightly under an hour. The clues were somewhat complex, so take out of the box thinkers and analytic types with you. I'm definitely interested in more escape rooms! read more

Ok the people leaving good reviews for this place have clearly never done an escape room before in their lives I have done escape rooms all over the world and i have to say, this place is the worst one I have ever done!! first of all Breakout is some chain escape room company. i was hesitant about going because of that, but they had a promo deal and figured why not just try it for cheap. Big Mistake. If you are going to an escape room, find a local entrepreneur who is making escape rooms. Chances are, the rooms are gonna be so much better thought out, with better puzzles, design, etc. #SupportLocal This place is a joke. First of all, its located in side the Ridgedale mall. Already you know its gonna be bad, because the location is so small. There clearly wont be enough space for a truly good escape room. I have so many issues with this place, where to begin? ok so first off, I did the Hostage room here. Dont be fooled by their staged promo pictures and videos on the website. This room was so bad. The gimmick with this room is they handcuff you to begin. my kid thought that sounded so fun, so we pick this room. When we got there, the employee tells me they cant handcuff my kid, because my kid's wrists are too small for the handcuffs?? what! are you kidding me. just handcuff the damn kid, thats why we came here. we wanted immersion! Speaking of immersion, this room has NONE. Not even with the crappy handcuffs. the walls are PAPER THIN at this location. you could hear other rooms SCREAMING so loudly. i couldnt believe how bad it was! when I do an escape room, I want to be fully immersed! i want to feel like I am really on a mission to escape. But how would this be possible when I can hear a group of 10 year old girls screamin their heads off in the next room over?? The hint system at Breakout is there are cameras in the room, and the employee watches you and speaks to you over an intercom system. I did not appreciate the employee speaking to us when we didnt ask for help!! That broke my immersion but also make me mad, because i want to figure things out for myself. for example, my friend is pondering over a certain puzzle, he says out loud to my group wondering if a key he found could be used for multiple things. The Employee speaks over the intercom "No that key is only used for that 1 thing". Uhh, we never asked for help!! i think its so important to let groups figure things out for themself unless they ask for it! They should do a better job training their employees. My next issue is that this room was literally just one room. Theres no secret doors, nothing to climb through - the door you walk in is the door that you will exit from. You figure out some puzzles and unlock some locks within the room to get the passcode to exit, but thats it. how lame!! I have never done an escape room that was only 1 single room. Sadly our experience wasn't great. In "do not disturb" the clock was set to the wrong time, which was a code. We spent too much time trying to figure out the code from a clock that was not showing the correct time. We did not get an apology or anything. Disappointing. read more

I booked a room in December for my son's birthday. All of the kids enjoyed it and could not stop talking about coming back and trying different rooms. His friend booked a room for his party. Two weeks before the party , the room chosen was being closed and they were told it was rebooked to another room. All of the guests received an email from Breakout about the changes. The day of the party , everyone shows up to be told the room was already booked. In other words , no one on site made sure the cancelled room was actually rebooked despite the emails confirming this. Our group was told that nothing could be done other than waiting 2 hours for an opening. The host of the party asked if the next group could be bumped an hour , like our group was bumped, we were told no. While waiting outside, I ended up unknowingly sitting next to the next group. An employee came out to talk to them , saying they might be delayed as there was a group being difficult and trying to bump them . In the end , our group did not get a room. I realize it was a mistake without a perfect resolution but to essentially be told " Too bad but it's not our problem to solve, even though we created it " was super disappointing . And being upset a booked party was cancelled without any notice or resolution is not being difficult. The host was offered a voucher for each kid but who would want to come back after experiencing such poor customer service? Hopefully management will train employees to improve their processes when rooms close so other customers don't have to be as disappointed as our kids were. read more

Horrible. The hostess booked an escape room weeks ago for her son's birthday party. They called her later and said they needed to rebook her to a different room because the first one was being torn down. She agreed, and told all guests. Today was the day of the party. Everyone arrived, only to be told they were overbooked and couldn't do anything for the birthday party group. We asked if they could call the next party to cancel them, since we were all standing there waiting with kids excited for a birthday party, but they refused. Wound up with a dozen disappointed children, and no birthday party to be had. The assistant manager Mason kept saying they'd call their manager to see if they'd do anything. Wouldn't call in front of us so who knows if the general manager was called or not. It took at least 30 minutes to sort all this out. The manager Will also said there was nothing they could do. Great place, we played the Hostages, and we 'Broke Out' and that too in just 50 mins (50:49) The place is in Ridgedale mall, and is a very classy upscale mall. There is plenty of parking, and this place is new so it's a bit difficult to find. We went for a 60 minute challenge, of which they have 4 different rooms. The guy helped us understand the rules well and we were then taken into the room blindfolded and handcuffed.... how exciting.... I won't spoil any further details, as you need to go in and enjoy the same. We went with 7 people which I felt was a good number considering the place and the way clues need to be worked. They have utilized technology pretty well to come up with this escape room we tried. The guys were really helpful and the place is clean. The guy did mention, not many solve this one, so we are pretty proud we did it and that too with 10 whole minutes to spare Will like to try their other rooms, heard the Kidnapping room is based on Saw theme. My first experience with an escape room and it was a great time. They have a wide selection of rooms and we their island scenario. Our Game Master was Lizzy and she did an excellent job on hints and technical help that did just enough to keep us moving while still letting us control the pace. The phrase escape room can be a bit misleading as the event we did was a series of a puzzles not directly related to an escape. Still required thinking and teamwork, just be clear what you looking for. We had a lot of fun. If I was in Minneapolis for more than two days I'd definitely go through all of their rooms. read more

Breakout Games in Minnetonka is probably the best thing you could ever do. Me and my 3 friends game here for one of our birthdays in May and did the kid napping room we enjoyed it very much and knew we wanted to do another room soon, tonight me and those same 3 friends, plus 1 more , did the hostage room. This room was not as fun to us compared to the kidnapping room but we still had lots of fun. The staff here is very nice and make the experience lots of fun. Payment can be confusing but staff does there best to make it all work out. I recommend anyone to come here with either family or friends you will have a great time. read more

A group of four other friends and I decided to try the kidnapping room, we just wanted to do something fun before summer ended. For my first escape room I couldn't say I was really disappointed at all. The only real complaint was that the directions were just a little unclear when it came to the clues but it was hardly a problem at all. Max was one of the best game guides I have ever had. We have done multiple escape games all over the country and by far had the best experience with him as our guide. He was very helpful with clues and when we still didn't get it after that, he continued to help us with it without getting annoyed or angry. He was very funny and welcoming. We had a blast! The rooms were well put together and the staff were excellent. Having done a couple different rooms previously - the only critique I would have was the setting. When these rooms are built in older homes or warehouses - it creates a heightened emotion. But - having this location be in a mall worked for a couple families who had never done this before. A deeply unsatisfying experience. The room we visited -- "Hostage" -- started us off blindfolded and handcuffed to a bench, a gimmick that managed to be anxiety-inducing but not clever or fun. From there, the room was a joyless slog through a pile of combination locks. A few of the individual set pieces were technically inventive, but even these were one-offs; conceptually, the room had the thematic coherence of a standardized test. And while much of the fun of an escape room is transformation -- the a-ha moment when a bookshelf turns into a secret passage or the back wall of a broom closet falls away to reveal a new cache of puzzles -- "Hostage" had little spacial ingenuity; the venue was essentially an ordinary broom closet with a few gadgets and a to-do list. And two of the puzzles didn't work. And the backstory was flimsy and crowded with pointless red herrings. And the acoustics were terrible so we heard all the clues from the adjacent room. And... and... and... The best escape rooms are not only inventive and absorbing, but they feel intimate, like a private performance. Piece by piece, you discover a puzzle designed by an actual person, sometimes a person who is literally cheering you on, delighting in your discovery. Breakout Games felt algorithmic and impersonal, as if the puzzles were created by a computer program in some faraway office park. It's the Applebees of escape rooms. The Twin Cities area has no shortage of fine escape rooms, including a few truly excellent ones run by locals who design and design and construct their own puzzles. Visit one of these mom-and-pop shops, like Trapped Puzzle Rooms in the cities, or Missing Pieces and IRL Escape in Edina. Skip Breakout Games. We were late starting the room because they paired our group of 4 with 2 other couples and one of the couples was 15 minutes late. That was the only downside. I did a room here a few days ago with my family. While the room itself was fun, it was rather small and was just one single room. I've done quite a few escape rooms and i love when it's multiple rooms that lead into each other. But that wasn't a deal breaker. We still had a fun time. My problem with this place is the customer service. We tried calling the night before to book, 3 hours before they closed, and they wouldn't answer the phones. We ended up booking it the day of. We ate at a restaurant next to the mall the day of, and we were trying to call them and they still were not answering the phones. We left a voicemail and called multiple times and 2 hours passed with no call back. So we decided to go into the mall while waiting for our food, and we went into the "lobby" and waited for about 15 minutes with nobody coming up front. We even knocked on the door that led to the rooms, and nobody came. Once we finally got ahold of them, the person who answered the phone was extremely rude. We paid $150 for 7 people to do this, and they were rude to us. When we arrived they put on nice faces and were a little bit better. Our "game master" was incredibly nice. But i just wish that the customer service was a little better. read more
