I had the Sausage Biscuits Breakfast which was like two huge sausage & egg sandwiches smothered with sausage gravy containing big chunks of sausage. If you like breakfast sausage biscuits & gravy this is the dish for you. Served with hashbrowns, it was more than I could eat. The restaurant was nicely done, clean and well kept. I was eager to check this place out. It seemed a lot smaller once I arrived than I expected - they only have a few tables. I stood at the door wondering what to do and soon asked if I should just seat myself - the right answer. There was only one table open, room for six, but I was there by myself. I took a chair and since I had been online and knew the menu I was ready to order as soon as I received my menu. I guess this isn't the South and it certainly isn't Oregon - a family of four showed up soon after I was there and I offered to share the table with them. I suppose that was my first mistake. They sat there and my meager attempts to even say hello were met with weird looks, awkward smiles and silence. I had the Chicken Fried Steak - it took a while to get the food brought out, I thought everything was tasty but I wasn't overwhelmed with either the quality or quantity of food. I do believe this was the most affordable CFS I have seen in a few years. I think it's a fine place to go if you're in the neighborhood but I'm not sure I would drive out of my way again to give it another try. read more

Sunday Brunch is mandatory in whatever city I happen to be visiting. I turned to yelp to find this great spot. My brunch companion and I arrived and got a table right away before the line started forming out the door. Apart from the small space, the food portions were large and yummy ( yes I said yummy...) The menu offered breakfast and lunch options that made it hard to decide what to get but after enjoying a vegetable omelet and sub of pancake instead of toast, I think I will definitely come back to try more. Update: We went back to try the sausage and biscuit which were awesome. Totally order the American fries instead of the hash browns...they are much better! See the picture of the sausage biscuits with gravy on them as those have American fries on the side. The strawberry stuffed French toast was good. But I didn't care for the eggs Benedict because they poach the egg until the yolk is solid. Probably to avoid salmonella but I like the egg yolk in my poached eggs to be creamy and runny. That's the only thing I wouldn't order again. But the hollandaise was excellent and the ham slice was huge! read more

All info online and the front door says they open at 6:30am. I drive over an hour to try this place. was just there (Wed , 08Feb23) at 6:30.. Nobody there. Only looked like security lights inside. The door was unlocked so I went inside. Nobody there. I called out loudly several times.... no answer. Looked around but found no one. Waited about 5 minutes. Still Nobody. I'm now at Scott's Family restaurant enjoying a wonderful breakfast. Don't wate your time going to Breakfast house. read more

A nice, laid back, no-nonsense menu and atmosphere that you come to when you're feeling for breakfast. It's a local joint but that doesn't hurt the quality or consistency. I've never had a bad meal here and we've also never been kicked out, which says a lot about their tolerance with late night parties who are up to the whee hours of the night/day. Cute little place - if you're not looking for it, you could totally drive right by. Only a few tables and they were full the whole time we were there. My husband got a skillet with eggs, sausage, potatoes, and cheese. I had corned beef hash. Both were excellent! Oh god where to begin on this place. This is probably in the top 3 worst service experiences I've ever had. We dropped in around 1, so they weren't super busy. Our waitress forgot BOTH our drink orders repeatedly and had to be reminded. After we'd been waiting about half an hour, she popped back up (still waiting on our drinks) to tell us that they had "run out" of chicken and so could not make me the chicken and waffles I'd ordered. To make matters more convincing, she asserted (while handing me a menu to pick something else) that she was pretty sure the chicken WAS in the back somewhere. 15 minute later she still hadn't come back to get my reorder, but she apparently mouthed "we're good" to my boyfriend from across the restaurant. 15 minutes later our food arrived. The food itself was a mixed bag. My boyfriend's eggs were done perfectly, and my waffles were delicious. The chicken, however, was a super market premade and frozen style chicken tender. My hash browns were badly undercooked, still white almost everywhere (the boyfriend's were nice and brown, so they clearly do know what they SHOULD look like). No apology or anything for the service train wreck, but she was quick to bring our check by the minute we stopped putting food in our mouths. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

The most fandidillytastic place ive ever been for breakfast. When I bit into the bacon, it had a lot of crunchy goodness. The bacon was filled with love, so juicy and tender. Service is usually good and attentive but they occassionaly get super busy and you will see the over stressed staff suffer. Due to its size, peek times can require a wait for seating. This is my favorite restaurant in Cedar Rapids, for a few reasons. First, I love breakfast. I love getting up early and going out for breakfast. Second, the service is always friendly and efficient. Third, the food is always delicious. When I'm in Cedar Rapids I try to get to the Breakfast House cafe at least once a week. Generally my visits are during the week, so they aren't as busy as the weekends. But occasionally I make it in on a Saturday or Sunday and they are packed by 9, with a line out the door. My favorites so far are the chicken fried steak and the pancake wrap (aka "pigs in a blanket"). Everything I've tried has been good. read more

When I travel, I yelp all my restaurants. My SO and I woke up very hungry this morning and found this gem of a place through yelp. We split the country fried steak and it's probably the best meat in a country/chicken fried steak I've had. And I like to think of myself as an amateur chicken fried steak judge. This place has been around for years now. Not even the 08' flood could hold them back. The food is simple, but amazing. Between food quality, portion sizes, speed, and great service, you really can't be disappointed. I have been going there since 2006 or 2007 and not once have I had a bad experience there. The menu is HUGE, and while all the Midwest favorites are still here, there's also an extensive selection of healthy breakfast platters loaded with fruit and vegetables. Up early and with an empty belly, I braved the morning traffic and stopped here before 8am. There were a handful of your typical breakfast-diner types (think farmer john and jim-bob) at a table but the cozy little place was mostly empty. She gave me a minute to look at the menu and mix my coffee, which was just about the right temp - not scalding hot. Tasted like a basic but mellow blend. Very nice. The chicken and biscuits sounded good so I placed my order and settled in. No tv, no music, just the sound of breakfast coming from the semi-exposed cooking area that runs along the wall. The wait wasn't long at all for the massive plate of food I got. Two fresh biscuits with a big piece of fried chicken and eggs between, all smothered in gravy and chaperoned by a large cake of hash browns, more than any person should eat for breakfast, hot and delicious. The chicken was well seasoned and juicy, the gravy just perfect consistency, not too thick or runny. I managed to get about half of it down - one biscuit or so. The only thing I'd like to see different was the hash browns. They were kind of mushy, just a big flat cake of maybe shredded pots cooked on the flat top. Unseasoned and uninspired, not the worst I've had but pretty bland. I have to give credit to the manager, by the time I left around 8:30 it was busy and she was hustling to get all the tables sorted out. Sounded like someone was late but even so my coffee stayed fresh and she smiled when she dropped off the bill. As good as it gets for breakfast. The place is clean and comfortable but close-in so don't expect a private conversation over coffee, DO expect solid service and great breakfast food for about $15 a person. The food is great, but the atmosphere is what really makes this place--I've only been here a few times, but each time it was filled to the brim with people enjoying great food and great company. The Breakfast House offers a great no frills breakfast. Skillets, omelets, biscuits, pancakes and waffles are all well done while the servers are always fast on their feet despite usually being very busy in the packed house. This is the place in Cedar Rapids to go if you just want really solid breakfast fare. The quality of food is excellent. The service not so much. I went when it was not busy. Food took almost 20 minutes and was Luke warm when brought to our table. My server sucked. This place has gone way downhill. I used to like coming here, but slowly they are cutting corners and cheapening their menu. While keeping their prices higher than most breakfast joints. My guest and I ordered the Baja omelet and Chicken fried Chicken. And hash brown crispy on Both sides. The menu claims that the Baja omelet has Chicken, bacon, Avocado and tomatoes. They were out of Chicken so they suggested Turkey instead, okay. What arrived had guacamole on it no bacon inside and it had lots of spinach. The waitress told us that they no longer have Avocados, and she didn't know why there was no bacon or why there was spinach. The CFC was not the chicken Breast I've had before, but a frozen breaded processed chicken patty, like the ones you would get in a school cafeteria style chicken sandwiches, flat and not good. We told the waitress, whom I do not blame for this, cost cutting is not her department, that we wanted to pay what we owed and that we were going somewhere else. I used to like going here, but I've noticed some changes lately, and I don't they no I will ever return.
