Realise that you have purchased lunch AND an afternoon snack for only a few dollars - probably around 5, and give yourself a little high five (try not to look like too much of a dork whilst doing this...) Spend the mounds of spare cash that you would have otherwise spent on lunch on an array of authentic Lebanese groceries. It is a tradition amongst my friends to come here for 'meat bread' when hungover - or as the Lebanese Bakery calls it 'meat pizza'. On your right as you enter is a big old woodfire oven and a list of breads you can order. A few are what we traditionally think of as pizza, most are delicious fillings wrapped in folded Lebanese bread. My favourites are the meat bread and the spinach and ricotta bread. Meat bread is a round lebanese bread, topped with spicy mince, tomato and onion, folded in half and cooked in the woodfire. Spinach and ricotta reminds me of a spanokopita, but better - a fresh lebanese bread, expertly folded into the shape of a triangle pasty and filled with friend spinach, red onion, spices and ricotta. DELICIOUS! Beyond the takeaway food, you can get fresh fruit and veg, yoghurt, cheese balls, halva, baklava (and other fresh nutty sweets), tinned food, cooking utensils, fresh breads, and some frozen foods too. Oh and a whole range of Lebanese music on tape and expired foreign candy. The staff are real friendly and this is a bustling little place on a Sunday afternoon.

When I looked at the website, I saw they also had a passionfruit icing option. I am a fan of passionfruit icing. My dream icing is pink passionfruit icing, but I've only seen homemade vanilla slices with pink passionfruit icing. When I arrived, I saw in the display that the "standard" vanilla slice was the award winner. In my mind, I needed to buy both versions and eat them. Both vanilla slices are superb. The pastry wasn't soggy. The custard was delightfully creamy and smooth with a vanilla flavour without being too sweet. The standard icing is okay. It's a bit thick for me and a bit too sweet. The passionfruit fudge icing, on the other hand, is fantastic. I love anything sweet and tart. Tarty sweetness makes my lips tingle and "sing". The passionfruit fudge is thick, but it doesn't "feel" thick in my mouth, and it's great to crunch the passionfruit seeds between my teeth. I ate the standard vanilla slice first because I wanted to finish with the tartness of the passionfruit fudge icing. I can appreciate why The Village Baker's standard vanilla slice won this year's baking award. I prefer their passionfruit fudge vanilla slice.

Pulling into the little shopping centre in Blackforest, the place doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you. This place is a hidden gem. They have a great selection of gourmet pies, pasties and sausage rolls. Beef and Bacon Pie! Amazing.. :) Also there selection of pastries and cakes are brilliant, and after walking in there today to find that they now sell CRONUTS! Sweet! :) This is a working Bakery and it is always packed, they are constantly refilling there pie warmer as they always sell out quick, so no day old footy pies here.. I would highly recommend this place next time your in the neighbourhood. :)

None of these items are particularly special - all standard, sugary fare without much flavour or finesse. I'm here for the Vietnamese Meat Rolls. Fresh baguette rolls filled with herbs and meat. You can get chicken, but my favourite is BBQ Pork. Not a bad lunch on your way home from the shops. You can also get a bag of prawn crackers or a soft drink or a pie. The pies aren't bad - I like the veal pie.

While some things are certainly better than your usual chain-store cake, others could do with a little more special attention. The Black Forest could do with more kirsch IMHO, and their breads aren't particularly special. The cake decorating style is a little old-fashioned for my taste - all cream swirls and chocolate flakes. Or big ostentatious shards of chocolate on the birthday cakes. Rheinland definitely make good cakes - but not *great* cakes.

This is just good food served straight up! Lawash Bakery is serving up some really decent Lebanese food. If you love grilled meats, bread and flavour, well you have come to the right place. There are a few vego items to choose from, but I think this is more of a meat eating destination. There are a lot of options for you to choose from. Many different styles of grill, bread and accompaniments. You can order large platters for the table to share as well. I went for the mixed grill, that way I get to try a couple of different styles. It was great! Full of flavour, spices, slightly salty and smoky. Everything you want in a kebab. It was served on some really fresh pita and a side of lettuce, tomato and onion. That way you can wrap it up if you like. There was a whole lot of garlic in that meat and sauce too. So, maybe bring some mints to freshen up afterwards. I really liked the service and value here. I might have liked a few choices of sauces to go with my meat. But, it was cooked well and tasted brilliant. This is the type of place you want to go to fill up before a night on the town. Note, if you need to go to the loo, the bathroom around the back of the shop. But, be warned, it is really ewwww...
