For Christmas I enrolled my family in a gourmet pizza class at Breaducation SF. I met the instructor, Cat Shimizu, when I inspected her home last year. This class is an awesome experience ! I have been making pizza from scratch for over 40 years and I walked away with several tips and ideas not to mention a batch of natural sourdough yeast starter and three balls of pizza dough ... I will be having pizza again tonight!

Chef Cat's pizza making class was awesome! She is a great teacher-- knowledgeable, warm, kind, relaxed.. I learned so much, had a great time, ate the best pizza and came home with my own starter dough. Thanks Chef Cat!

This was just way more than I expected! It was beyond amazing learning to bake a sourdough pizza. Cat is an excellent teacher, guiding all of us with her wealth of baking knowledge. Yes, I've baked cookies (for my kids) and I've baked bread (for my parrots), but this class really elevated me into a level of baking I never knew I could accomplish. My first pizza was not only something to behold, it was delicious - if I do say so myself. If you have just a smidgen of desire to try baking, you have to take this class. You will definitely leave with a feeling of true accomplishment. Cat will make you feel at home from the moment you walk in. Trust me, you will have a blast kneading and tossing dough around. Just plain fun! Thanks Cat!

    My first sourdough loaf.

As a person who was baffled by sourdough starter and had failed attempts at bread making, I took Cat's bread making class on January 11, 2020. Cat Shimizu is an excellent instructor. So calm, warm and personable. And what a wealth of baking knowledge! The class was well paced and very informative. We discussed making and feeding starter, and went through the entire process of sourdough bread making. We mixed dough, timed the rests and folds, and scored and baked loaves that had been pre-prepared. We shared in a warm loaf and Cat provided cheeses, meats, fruit, butter and honey. All top quality. Those who cared to, also enjoyed wine that students brought. We left with our freshly baked loaves, our mixed and shaped dough, and a complementary proofing basket and liner. We also took away authentic San Francisco sourdough starter and an emailed synopsis of the class including detailed instructions with recipe. Don't be late to this class because there is so much information- Cat hits the floor running. I baked my first loaf today, following Cat's guidelines and success! I would highly recommend this class to anyone who loves freshly baked SF sourdough bread.

Our team did the Pizza making class with Cat and had an absolute blast. I emailed her about a week and a half before our team event hoping to find something great for our team to do. She was super responsive and sent over all the information right away. I thought a cooking class would be fun and I bet most are but what REALLY makes a great class is having an amazing instructor like Cat. She tries to get to know each participant and keeps everyone engaged the entire time. Everyone was participating, learning and of course the food was absolutely delicious! We started with some tasty snacks when we arrived, began learning about starters, creating our dough and then got to each create our own pizza. On top of that we each got to go home with our own sourdough starter AND balls of dough so we could continue the cooking. Not only did we find Cat to be such a sweet, welcoming woman but she had everyone laughing the whole time. I highly recommend taking one of her classes or planning a team offsite here :) Your smile and belly will thank you.

    Enjoying our work!

7/27/25 Zach…read moresurprised me with a ramen cooking class at The Story of Ramen. I lovvvve ramen (and noodles in general) so I was ecstatic for this experience. The Story of Ramen is located in the Mission so parking was a little tricky. We got to the general area 20 minutes before so that we could get a decent parking spot. We did the 4 hour advanced workshop where we learned about how to prepare the broth, marinated eggs, chasiu pork, tare seasoning and how to make the ramen. For that day, there were 5 other pairs. Our teachers Manville and Jeff, guided us through every step of the arduous process of making the perfect bowl of ramen. The workshop started off with a lecture about the history of ramen and the creation of The Story of Ramen. Of all the tasks we did, my favorite was making the ramen itself. After learning in detail how much work goes into making ramen, I appreciate ramen more than I ever did before. This was a great team building activity and something new for us. I highly recommend this and of course you get to eat the bowl of ramen you make at the end of the workshop!

Then I found Brigitte and White Apron. Brigitte's sent me a great intake questionnaire that went through what I liked, what I didn't--down to specific foods and ingredients. Brigitte and Collin then created meals catered to my tastes and calorie goals (paleo, ~700 calories/meal). Every week, I'd send in feedback on that week's food and we'd tweak things further (eg, cook asparagus in a certain way, no on specific spices, etc). Such a far cry from the on-demand food startups! The thing I loved the most about White Apron is the personal attention I got from the chefs about my likes, dislikes, and suggestions. They're extremely receptive to everything and crafted meals just for my tastes. If you're looking for a personal chef in San Francisco, I highly recommend White Apron.

Brigitte made a simple but well seasoned salad of fresh organic veggies and mixed herbs. This was complimented by a hearty, soul-warming lamb curry. I was delighted by her take on the curry. The meat was fork-tender and the spices were complex and savory but not overwhelming. We finished up with a playful make-your-own sundae and relaxed with happy full bellies. I'd have Brigitte over to cook for me any time!
