My wife had the Beef Kabob plate with pilaf and I had the Lamb tenderloin dinner. We were amazed at how everything on our plates was cooked perfectly and tasted great! The beef kabob tasted like Filet mignon and the lamb was the most tender and tasty I have ever had. The service was great and we can't wait to bring friends to try this amazing restaurant. In Fresno, where the Armenian community reaches back almost to the city's beginnings, food like this carries a particular weight. Restaurants are places to eat, but they also keep a connection to kitchens and people you miss. The pleasant dining room and generous patio make a good first impression. So do prices that suggest you might come back on an ordinary Tuesday. The lulu kebab was good. The pilaf and bulgur alongside it were more puzzling: properly cooked, but almost entirely without flavor. The vermicelli in the pilaf hadn't been browned, missing the toasted quality that makes it worth adding in the first place. Whatever chicken stock might have been involved was keeping a low profile. Salt seemed to have missed dinner altogether. Perhaps remembering my grandmother's cooking set the bar a little high, but wanting another forkful of rice does not seem an unreasonable expectation. The staff were friendly when they appeared, although appearances were infrequent enough that a simple dinner stretched to two hours. A large patio is a lovely thing; ample time to contemplate its dimensions is less essential. There is plenty to like here, particularly a menu I was happy to see and a bill that comes in below many comparable places. But the rice needs the same attention as the kebab, and the tables could use a little more of it, too.

So it was a bit disappointing for us, since most of what we wanted to try wasn't available (Spinach Borek, Ajarakan, Mini Khachapuri, and Nazook Gata). I had 2 Lahmajune (aka Lahmacun, Lahmajun), which I really loved. These were delicious, like a super thin pizza crust, topped with chopped beef in a flavorful sauce with spices and bits of veggies (onions, parsley, red peppers, etc). I also had a Spicy Borek, which was good, but I didn't love the filling-to-dough ratio on this one. I tasted the dough more than filling. My husband, lamenting the lack of Spinach Borek that he was looking forward to, had only 2 Maniesh (aka Manakeesh, Manakish, etc.) for lunch (and a Tahini bread for a later dessert). The owner who helped us, heated up our order (since it was all baked earlier and cool by now), but my husband later told me, his were barely warm. He really liked the topping of the Maniesh (Za'atar, which is a blend of several different spices including oregano & thyme). But he found the pita-like bread the Za'atar was spread on too dry, and overwhelmed the Za'atar. He enjoyed the Tahnini bread more, being just a sweet, light dough. Prices were quite reasonable, except the Spicy Borek seemed a bit much, compared to the other items on the menu. (Also, the Ajarakan is double the Spicy Borek, at $13. Maybe it's worth it, though; I can't say, since it wasn't available.) Due to the prices, I'm rounding up my rating to 4*.

The Breadbasket is absolutely amazing! From the food to the service, everything feels warm, welcoming, and made with love. Every time I come in, I feel less like a customer and more like family. At this point, they're basically my Armenian-Jamaican cousins! The food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and comforting, and the hospitality is what really makes this place special.
