With the exception of the potato croquets and strawberry shortbread, the dishes we had were only half-way dialed in (e.g., hot chicken but with cold soba noodles, perfectly braised scallops drowning in an overly oniony brown sauce with 6 (!) peas, etc.). I am very disappointed in this restaurant and will never go back. I am not sure if they have a different menu for lunch than for dinner, as after reading the other reviews I did not see any of the items that were mentioned on the menu. I think I get out quite a bit, but I did not know what a lot of the items were on the menu. It would have been nice if there was a little explanation under the item to say what it was.... I ordered coffee and no one offered me a second cup. The waittress told us that each cup has to be brewed separately. Guess it was too much to ask for another cup. I really, really wanted to love this place. I had heard great things and I was excited to see what creative and delicious treats were in store, but was a bit underwhelmed. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the staff was very friendly but I wasn't blown away by the menu or the food. I think I may have to give it one more try before writing it off. We found this place through Yelp and weren't disappointed. The atmosphere is very nice, modern but relaxed. Staff is friendly and helpful. It wasn't very crowded on a Thur evening, but that wasn't a problem. Homemade bread is excellent. Nanna's meatballs tasty with flavorful marinara. Arugula salad with Parmesan perfect light salad. Halibut and risotto well prepared. We ended our meal with a yummy warm chocolate chip brownie topped with vanilla ice cream. Sadly, we were just passing through so I don't think we'll have the opportunity to be back, but if we are in the area again, we'll find our way back here. read more

Went here last night for the first time and it was fun! We allowed our server to pick our food out since she seemed very passionate about a few things on the menu. She chose 3 tartines for us and French onions purses, marinated olives and pretzel knots. As we were just sharing a few small plates but they were all so good! Our drinks were amazing as well! I honestly love the Bread Bar, I just don't feel I've eaten dinner there enough to be qualified to give them a 5 star rating. Although their dinner menu can get a little pricey, their lunch menu offers some great soups and sandwiches for very affordable prices. My mother and I have made a habit of going for lunch a couple times a month and I always get the half soup and half sandwich combo for only $10. The smoked whitefish salad is the best salad I've ever had, although I suppose I'm not a huge salad person. This place is also great for a happy hour or after dinner cocktail and dessert with friends. Honestly, I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered or tasted here. This is my new favorite restaurant in the Benton Harbor/Saint Joseph area. They have only been open for a week, and we ate there for the first time tonight. The salmon was outstanding--the best I have ever had. The tartines were wonderful--very inventive, as were the vegetable sides and appetizers. Fresh, locally grown Michigan strawberry shortcake was great. The menu was a little sparse, but our server told us they would be adding to it. The restaurant is owned by Tim Foley, who also owns the local Bit of Swiss Bakery. This is a big-city restaurant on the shore of the St. Joseph River. Oh, and their patio with a view of the river will be open next week! read more

My wife and I visited Bread + Bar on the last Saturday in March and enjoyed it so much that we returned on Friday night the very next weekend. There are still plenty of things on the menu we're excited to try, so we'll be going back again soon. Each dish was delicious, and a few were exceptional. On visit #1 we started with the Deviled Eggs, which were fantastic and only $3.75. Next were the French Onion Purses which be both loved. A french onion soup flavor in a tasty little pastry pouches. So good. My entree was the steak, which was cooked perfectly and was an imaginative preparation in a delicious sauce (more like a broth, but that's a good thing) with beans and broccolini. My wife had the chicken and loved every bite, and I enjoyed the one bite she offered to me. We were too full for dessert but liked the look of the coconut cheese cake so took it to go. It was fantastic - not too sweet, and also not too dense and cheese-cakey, if that makes any sense. It was surprisingly composed and delicate. The bread in the bread basket was excellent. On the next visit, I started with the Rosemary Parmesan Gougreres which are delightful little light puffs of delicious bread things. My wife had the Chicken Wild Rice soup and enjoyed it very much. For my entree I had the pork chop, and the meat was probably in the top 3 or so pork chops I've ever had. I don't know what a "Berkshire Pork Chop" is, but I hope they stay with that same supplier. Prepared perfectly. It came with sweet potato chunks that were cooked with apple cider; delicious and a perfect accompaniment to the pork chop. The kale with bacon was also very good. My wife had the special fish (skrei, like cod) and it was cooked absolutely perfectly. Right on the money, not always a sure bet at even the best restaurants. I can't recall everything else on her plate, but it all worked perfectly together and she was quite happy with her dinner - this was probably the best plate of anything we ordered in our two visits. This time we ate a little less bread before dinner and saved room for dessert. We had to go with the coconut cheese cake again and weren't sorry. A word about the drinks: I don't drink but my wife ordered a special drink from the menu each time and loved them both. Finely crafted cocktails worth the $10. On our first visit I asked the bartender to make me an NA drink of their choice and was presented with a beautifully crafted cocktail without alcohol. On the second visit I went with a Kaliber; it's nice that they have a good option for an NA beer rather than that more famous kind that nobody likes very much. The space is nicely designed and comfortable. I keep meaning to ask them where they got their light fixtures. It's casual, but well thought out. I'd be comfortable here in blue jeans and a nice shirt, a jacket and tie, or anything in between. And there were people dressed in all of the above. Service was just fine. Not stuffy, not too casual. I have a feeling their waitstaff will evolve and front of house will eventually be on par with the back. read more

hubby not happy they changed the eggplant parm hero to two small triangles open faced bread with just eggplant, cheese and sauce. not enough for a grown man to be happy with. came with a small portion of tossed greens. i got the route 66 salad; small to medium size, with a chicken breast. chicken cooked nicely but did not like the pre-tossed salad. bland and tasteless. way over priced for the size. menu has not changed in at least a year, which is quite limited if one does not eat bacon. greeter and waitress both apathetic to our presence. could not find less enthusiastic representation of the restaurant. would have liked to try the lemonade cake but was not shown the dessert tray and i did not spot it till we left. will not be returning when in the area again. read more

I couldn't resist trying this restaurant-the radio ads were so inviting. What better excuse to try something new but on my husband's birthday? We went on a Saturday evening and were seated immediately. Service was decent and the food was 'just' above average. I wished they had a couple of more sandwich options on their dinner menu. After all, it is the 'bread bar'. I could not get my preferred drink of choice - wine by the glass. I was the only one drinking wine so that was not an option. The atmosphere was that of a cafeteria - very, very loud although the aesthetics were pleasing. We are not at all opposed to spending a substantial amount of money on a meal; however, in this case, the food and the experience really did not justify the bill. Would I go again? Excellent meal last night. It was not our first visit, and we've eaten light meals there before, but this time everything clicked at dinner. They seem to have expanded the entree menu, and put a lot of thought into them. Shared the deviled eggs and gougeres as appetizers, the latter especially tasty. My husband had the skirt steak and raved about the sauce as well as the bean and vegetable sides. My roast chicken in a natural au jus was perfectly cooked, with mashed potatoes and some mixed green vegetables. I'm not a zucchini lover, but oh, what he did with it! Bread, of course, is delicious. One of the better dinner restaurant options in the area. The food is reliably good, specials can be excellent. When they opened, the menu rotated more on a seasonal basis, but most seasonal changes are minor and the same from year to year now. (Sigh.) Still, you can't go wrong with the tartines, and the caesar salad is surprisingly good. Mussels and scallop dishes stand out from other entrees for this pescatarian, but my dining partner also really enjoys the wild boar in the fall/winter. Really, though, the entree specials are the best things on the menu most nights. The wine selection is good, usually featuring quite a few good-value French, Italian, and Spanish options (a welcome relief from CA chard and cab). Waitstaff are well-informed, but service can be uneven--somehow this feels in line with the contemporary-casual-industrial atmosphere, though. It is noisy and can feel crowded on weekends and in beach season (esp. given how close some of the tables are to one another). read more

I'm still a fan. I'm overly lavish with five star reviews, I think because for me the bar is pretty low. I don't expect much from local restaurants. Service here is quite good. Menu is better than most in the area. I just need a little more. We went on a busy Friday night and the food was above good, as usual. Table near the door was lacking ambience, but we didn't have a res, and that's our fault. The one thing that sticks in my mind was a shisito/padron pepper app - -the waitress warned us, actually that four out of ten would be hot HOT. I like HOT. I did not like this app ! Who wants to coat her mouth with FIRE before dinner? Not this girl. I love shishitos. Order them other places, and cook them at home. This plate of peppers ($8) likely should not have been on the menu. I take partial responsibility, as I was warned and could actually smell the capsaicin, wafting, as if straight from Satan's fiery kitchen, on the currents of steam from the plate. I felt like that guy on food network who takes dares, while the crowd cheers him on . . .only I didn't get paid like he likely does and nobody was cheering . . .we were offered conciliatory desert, which we didn't want, even to go. This off my chest, the short ribs were good, bread and butter ALWAYS good here, and I needed the bread to pull the oil of capsicum from my palate . . .the acorn squash, vegetable of the day was exquisitely seasoned and delicious. We will, of course, go back, but I will take the warnings of the waitress more seriously in the future! read more

Very cute restaurant with great ambiance. Unfortunately, my husband and I thought the food was just ok. I ordered the scallops. They arrived in a bowel that had about a half inch of liquid broth.... Not what I was anticipating when I ordered seared scallops. It just made the dish mushy. My husband ordered the salmon with lentils. Again, it came out swimming in broth, more like lentil soup. Both dishes, in our opinion, would have been very good if it wasn't for all the liquid. Service was great and we would like to give this restaurant another try! read more

Love the atmosphere in Bread+Bar, very comfortable casual. The Tartines are wonderful, especially the smoked whitefish and the serrano ham. The french onion purses are a MUST, perfectly bite size. There are very few restaurants nearby where the food is made from scratch, tastes fantastic and is healthy. The bar is unique with interesting wine, beer and craft cocktail selections. Service was fast, friendly and professional. Pricing is surprisingly reasonable for food of this quality. Simply awesome! read more

My husband and i braved a 30 minute drive and a snowstorm to try this place for the first time and we will be back - with friends! I had the arctic char - phenomenal - and my husband had the grilled skirt steak. Hard to do that rare but they got it very close. We had good service. We thought the food was good but nothing we have to return for. Enjoyable atmosphere. The shrimp tacos were the special. The batter was wet. The shrimp was not crispy at all. My daughter loved her salmon. The Siracha chicken was good but not spicy which was disappointing. The Caesar salad was the highlight of our meal. My husband had the spicy mussels.
