    Caramelised Lemony Banana Pancakes

    I came to Bread & Circus on Good Friday as I had checked online and this cafe was open so YAY. We arrived around 10.30am and there was a long line! The waiting time wasn't too bad, around 20 minutes, and the staff gave us a menu to look over which I didn't need - I always check the menu before I go to a place, how else do you decide whether you want to go there or not? Anyway so it was breakfast time and I am a sucker for pancakes! The only reason I agreed to go to Bread & Circus was because of their pancakes. Here is the description: Caramelised Lemony Banana Pancakes: banana, ricotta and biodynamic egg flourless pancake w/maple syrup, lemon compound butter, caramelised banana and strawberry - $19 The wait for the pancakes was kinda long and my friend who had been to this cafe before said that the food does take a while to come out. We had both ordered the same dish, as my friend and I get food envy when the other person get's a better dish so we always order the same thing. Lol The pancakes came out and i would say they look more like hotcakes. These pancakes are "healthy style" so don't go thinking they are gona be those thick regular type of pancakes. Nevertheless, the pancakes were delicious! The pancake was lemony and when you add the ricotta and maple syrup, there is a great balance. I also combined the banana and pancake together in each mouthful and it was just divine! I really enjoyed the pancakes and I would return back for something else on the menu. Note: My sister had the pancakes and she didn't like it. I must admit I have a healthier palate than my sister so the "healthy style" of pancakes IS my cup of tea. Parking Tip: There is a "Secure" parking up the driveway next to the cafe. Go down the long driveway, and the parking lot is at the end. It is paid parking, and you pay when you exit at the boom gates. Parking here is worth your while if you hate trying to find street parking.

    In the middle of pretty much nowhere, the crowds for this place were an early indication that it might be rather good. Better than good, it was terrific! The menu was filled with healthy and interesting dishes. If you're after a veggie hit and want to treat your body kindly without sacrificing on flavour then this is the kind of menu that you'll love. I had "Breakfast with Gwenyth" - quinoa, sautéed greens and two fried eggs. I imagined myself doing Pilates with Gwenyth Paltrow with every bite and felt rather virtuous. The cold pressed juices were delicious and well priced. They're rather intense so a small should be sufficient for everyone. Vibrant. Fresh. Fun. The staff were pleasant and coped well under the pressure of a heaving room and the logistical challenges of massive communal tables. My inner hospo worker was super impressed. 5 stars for this circus.

    Situated in what I would call a mini cafe Mecca, Bread & Circus is a new favourite brunch/lunch spot. Newbies will feel slightly lost until you work out that you report to the counter.. let the friendly staff know how many people you have... and you'll either be seated immediately or have a short wait until one becomes available. All the seating is shared.. but that is part of the charm. The "Breakfast with Gwyneth" ($20) has become my lady's instant favourite. The dish is primarily sautéed white quinoa with two fried eggs, but also with other veggies that are cooked into a mass of deliciousness. (see photo!) I have become hooked on their "Parmesan not-so-scrambled eggs with chilli" ($20). You get the choice of bullet chilli vs. real truffle oil. The chilli gives it a small yet pleasant kick. I'm a little wary by the truffle oil option as in my experience the old saying of "less is more" rarely applies to chefs who accent their dishes with this rich ingredient. I haven't had it, so can't fairly comment on it... It might be great (the rest of the food has been). The Secret I'm going to share is to add a side order of Ham to give you the option to create what I'm dubbing "the breakfast manwich". Essentially you take what is given in the scrambled eggs dish, load it up onto the toast provided, and top with the ham (photo for effect). The result is an open faced meal for a king. We love Bread & Circus and have gone back numerous times. Bonus points: Go to the staff member who was wearing the Star Wars Jedi Knight 2 t-shirt... always glad to see another geek.

    This place is located in a industrial/funky space in Alexandria. Parking can be a bit of an issue on the weekends so be sure to get here early otherwise you may find yourself in a spot of trouble. The lines outside this place because there's Don Campos and now Pana Chocolate that's opened within the same area is insane. So be prepared to wait for a while - have a coffee or two! I love the fresh, raw kind of style food Bread and Circus offers. The staff are friendly although the service I've found to be a bit of hit and miss. Most likely because they are run off their feet as it's busy. Definitely a place to visit if you're in the neighbourhood. Alexandria is the place to be!

    I've wanted to come here for so long. SO LONG. Like crazy person checking their daily menu updates, daily, on their website type of crazy. I've been here twice now - both times when visiting Sydney and it is probably one of my favourite breakfast places EVER. I would come here everyday if it wasn't so far away from where I live in Sydney. The food is delicious - huge huge drinks menu of juices, smoothies, kombucha, kelfir and all sorts of healthy things. The one thing I love about Australia is the abundance of REAL, GOOD, WHOLESOME food. You won't get free-ranged eggs here, you'll get 'biodynamic' eggs which is a method of organic farming describe as "a holistic understanding of agricultural processes". So basically, holistic well taken care of chicken eggs. You actually cannot get better than biodynamic food, but more on the food in a moment The staff are very friendly, gorgeous ambience - picture perfect. Walking in you feel like you've entered your life canteen. Cute pink plates, colourful menus and a very nice seating arrangement. Great for groups, but I would come early/off peak to assure a nice table (there are communal tables and some booths if I remember correctly). The food has super cute names - favourites being 'Rainy Day Toast', 'Pimms without the Pimms', 'Breakfast with Gwyneth' and my personal favourite, 'The Ranga' (orange an watermelon - ginger optional). Ranga is what they call ginger/red head people in Australia - just FYI. My other fav was the 'Ginger Rainwater Kefir' because HOW FRIGGIN COOL DOES THAT SOUND - of course I ordered this (for the health benefits, obviously). I came in desperately wanting the Morning Jumble, due to my die hard love for Bircher Muesli, but the second time coming here and sharing 6 meals between the 5 of us, they actually turned out to be my least favourite of the bunch. The Foxy Summertime Porridge is the best porridge I've ever eaten in my life. When they ask if you'd like the optional dollop of organic clotted cream, say yes. Don't ask questions. That will be your biggest regret of the month otherwise. I surprising loved Breakfast with Gwyneth (sautéed white quinoa, kale, mixed greens, garlic, chilli with 2 fried eggs) after only ordering it because it was said to be a customer favourite. But I guess that's why it is. The parmesan not-so-scrambled eggs were the first to go, and we fought to the end. So yummy. So basically, when in Australia... eat at Bread & Circus for breakfast.

    I've only been here once and it was good, nothing spectacular but worth checking out. Expect to line up, also be sure to organize a group of 4 so you can sit at a booth which was pretty nice. Menu was good, I looked up the hashtag on Instagram to see what I could expect. The fruit platters look pretty but I don't understand why people would choose it... I was torn between the porridge and the 'not so scrambled eggs'. After my father in law ordered the eggs I regretted my choice instantly; but the porridge was still nice - mostly due to the granola/pear/hazelnut topping, otherwise it was a touch bland. I also got the coconut/banana/berry smoothie which was delicious. Cute little set up, the bakery is interesting to watch while waiting to be seated. Decor is to be expected of Alexandria these days (you know what I mean!). Nothing particularly unique, although I must say, it's the first time I'd seen "reverse osmosis water" labels on the pipes... Righto. To summarize... It's good, not great, yet not bad... Ultimately I wouldn't rush back.

    Really cute cafe and interior, great Instagram photo opportunity haha. We got late breakfast here on a Sunday and didn't have to wait for a table but noticed there was a long line when we left. It was also cool to be able to see into the bakery and them making fresh bread on the way in. The food and coffee was great, I got the porridge and it was a very decent serving. The staff were all really lovely and the place had a nice organic and fresh vibe.

    A good place for a preservative - free, biodynamic, vegan, vegetarian, Gwyneth Paltrow cookbook breakfast that's inside a bakery. Ohh i feel so much more holistic and spiritual just writing this... Don't believe me have a look at the times 'preservative - free' or 'biodynamic' appear on their menu. The food is nice but pricy as someone has to pay for the extra syllables on the menu. Not good if you're hungover on a Sunday looking for some greasy bacon and eggs. But good if you want to sit and eat with lentil feed hipster women in lu lu lemon yoga pants.

    Waited in a queue for lunch on Saturday for around 20 minutes and parking was hard to find. The eggs in my parmesan not-so-scrambled-eggs were so delicious! I couldn't stop thinking about them and tried replicating them at home the next day. My dining partner's feta frittata was flavoursome and fresh and there was a generous portion of the side salad. The food and drinks are pricey. Got the ginger rainwater kefir by the fermentary was $6 for a tiny glass, maybe 100ml at most!!! Daylight robbery! Service was not good, there were too many diners and not enough staff. Also there is a credit card surcharge for all credit cards.

    This place is similar to all the other latest surry hills, waterloo, alexandria cafés and restaurants. The food is organic and fresh. Had to queue to waiy for a table which was quick for us but confusing for some because its not actually a line. Ordering food and waiting for food took a while but it was appetising. Had to wait to pay for the bill again. The guy at cashier is efficient but probably need a better system. I ended up having to join the queue again to pay for my bill. The same queue where people were waiting to be seated. Gosh, they wouldn't have noticed if I just gave up queuing and left. Points off for inconvenience and bad feeling on saturday morning.

    Parmesan Not-so-scrambled Eggs

    Came in on a Sunday morning once and the queues were enough to deter me and I had my breakfast elsewhere. Came back on one Friday morning, I don't know about any other Friday morning but that day there was no queue. There were six communal wooden tables with vegetables, plants and kitchen items adorned the tables and more produce scattered around the cafe and even a big pile of produce on one big table right at the centre of the cafe prepares you for the type of food you're in for. The pink and pastel decor and plates did a great job in softening the whole outlook. The menu promotes healthy, wholesome meal. Let's be honest, nowadays people are becoming more aware of what we put in our mouth and care of what impact it'll have on our health. That's when things like 'biodynamic egg' and 'activated almonds' become popular and organic is suddenly cool. The highlight for me was Breakfast with Gwyneth, and Gwyneth definitely would be proud of this wholesome and oh so tasty meal of mine! Sautéed white quinoa with kale, chilli and mixed greens, and two perfectly fried biodynamic eggs. They were seasoned well and tasted like flavoursome fried rice with the great texture of quinoa. Then there's Parmesan Not-so-scrambled Eggs. Biodynamic eggs with fresh chilli or real truffle oil, Parmesan, avocado, baby spinach, tomato, fresh herbs and sourdough. My husband chose his with fresh chilli and he thought the meal was average but I was happy with the flavour. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and would love to come back again and make a note to myself not to come on a weekend.

    Ambience: was surprised to discover it was a section of a large premise. The entrance was via Campos Coffee. Came here with a friend and her baby. It's difficult - not impossible - to maneuver around with a pram. I have to give cudos to the staff for being super friendly and helpful with the baby. Food: I had Breakfast with Gwenyth dish ($20). It had all the ingredients I love: quinoa, spinach and eggs.

    I love the concept of Bread and Circus: healthy food and (mostly) communal tables. There are lots of fresh fruits and veges on display to keep with this theme. I saw the cute pink coffee cups on instagram and that was what initially led me to visit Bread and Circus. But honestly, the coffee was a bit meh. No real punch even though I had a double shot. I ordered the porridge, which was beautifully presented with granola, hazelnuts and a poached pear on top. Nice combo of flavours and I liked the contrast of the smooth porridge and the crunchy topping. Overall though it was very expensive, even by Sydney standards, and I don't really think the food and service met such a high standard. Not saying there was anything particularly wrong with my experience, just that for the price I would expect it to be exceptional and not just pretty good.

The café occupies the corner of Garden st and Henderson Road and is industriously styled with cool marble and pink interior and a hanging garden. There's plenty of space inside and out, so I you won't be waiting long for a table. Serving Toby's estate coffee and a range of modern Australian dishes for both breakfast or lunch, as well as some sweet treats, is a popular café with the locals and visitors to the area alike. I've visited now on more than one occasion and the café is continuously striving to perfect their menu offerings. A group of us dined on this day to sample a number of the menu choices. The Grumpy's special of chili scrambled eggs were presented atop sourdough bread and a side of heirloom carrots, a heatlhy and wholesome meal. The winner of the day, and also one recommended to us was the Green Pea Smash with burrata and prosciutto. A great combination of flavours. From the sweets menu, we went for the Fig Brioche, topped with macadamia, honey, ricotta and vanilla ice cream (in place of the regular fairy floss). There were a few fruits topping it and would love to have a few more. The Grumpy's granola and pannacotta is also not only beautiful, but delicious and served with a raspberry pannacotta. Could be a sweet or breakfast ;) The venue also serves the famous cronuts (a mix of a doughnut and croissant, filled with a range of insides like cream, Nutella, caramel and topped with oreos etc. Surprise yourself. The guys at grumpy's are always friendly and hospitable. Make sure you pay them a visit.

The guy who runs this place is Peruvian and you can see the influence in some of the dishes here, especially the Peruvian Roll (duh.) If you've never had Peruvian chincarron before, you really need to get this roll. Seriously. It's one of the best rolls I've had in Sydney. The kumera (sweet potato) isn't overcooked, the pork is tender and delicious, the fried egg is a perfect runniness, and the salsa criolla with lemon mayo is a great complement. Friends got a few of the other stuff on the menu like the Puffed Galette, Beef Hash, and Mushroom Medley and really enjoyed those, in particular the Puffed Galette. They use coffee beans from The Golden Cobra and the coffee is pretty spot on. If you want to taste all the notes in the coffee with a cold brew, they do that too. The places loses marks only because service can be hit or miss. Food took an inordinate amount of time and waitress forgot things here and there. Otherwise, the food and coffee are fantastic.
