Every time we visit my cousin in Social Circle, Georgia, one stop is practically guaranteed: Hot…read moreRod's Diner. We've eaten here enough times that it feels less like a restaurant visit and more like part of the tradition. Tonight I ordered the Blue Plate Special with hamburger steak smothered in grilled onions, collard greens, green beans, cornbread, and a big bowl of Brunswick stew. My unsweet tea stayed filled thanks to Rhonda, who was serving tables while also managing the restaurant. We learned that Hot Rod's started the evening with three servers scheduled. Business was slow, so one server was sent home. Naturally, that's when things picked up. Even so, Rhonda and the remaining server kept everything moving smoothly, and we never felt neglected during our visit. The Brunswick stew was excellent and gave us an unexpected opportunity for comparison. Earlier in the day we had Brunswick stew at Fresh Air Bar-B-Que. Hot Rod's version was chunkier, with larger pieces of meat, more noticeable vegetables, and a slight kick of spice. The Fresh Air version was smoother and more finely blended. Both were excellent, but they were definitely different styles. The hamburger steak was flavorful, the green beans and collard greens tasted like proper Southern vegetables, and when the Texas Pete hit the table there was only one thing to say: "My man, Texas Pete goes on the collards." Then came the surprise ending. We learned that peach cobbler was half price today. Unfortunately, they were out. Or so we thought. A fresh cobbler was still in the oven. For the next several minutes, the suspense reached maximum peach. Finally, the cobbler emerged from the kitchen and was served à la mode. The French gave it a classy name. The South perfected the application. Warm peaches, a buttery cobbler topping, and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream that immediately melted with a purpose made for the perfect ending to the meal. It was absolutely worth the wait. Hot Rod's continues to be one of our favorite stops in Social Circle, and after another great meal, I have no doubt we'll be back again the next time we're in town. So far so good. I ordered the speedy Gonzalez, which is rice, beans, an enchilada, and a taco. My girlfriend ordered the lunch #8, which was supposed to be burritos and received two tacos with rice and beans instead. We receive our food, and from the start it's not good. It's slopped onto a metal tray as if we were in a third world prison. No care, no thought of presentation in the least. I ate the taco first and could immediately tell the shell came out of a box, and wasn't cooked. The lettuce was slightly brown and room temperature. Beef was okay, seasoned well with decent texture. I finish that and move on to the "Mexican rice". To call this Mexican rice would be insulting to an entire culture. The rice was absolutely from a frozen bag, and came with corn (understandable), Lima beans and green beans, which the latter of are far from what they called "gourmet" Mexican. It was horrendous. I spared myself the cold, crusted over beans and decided to try the enchilada. Again, frozen. The beef was far from relatable to that of the taco, the tortilla was mush, and the sauce was offensive to anything close to a taste bud. Please, do yourself a favor and eat else where.

We also of course had an order of refried beans because you can't eat in a Mexican restaurant without having refried beans! Cute little restaurant very well decorated lots of TVs with many choices to keep your attention if you don't want to pay attention to who you're eating with lol

The place is decked out in cowboy attire everywhere on the wall. But the place is too quiet. Just the absence of music in the background made something feel missing. I chose the brisket platter with baked potato salad and mac and cheese. The brisket was phenomenal! It was easy to chew, juicy, good flavor, a good rub on the outside, and all 3 sauces tasted wonderful with it. Speaking of sauces, all were mar-vel-ous. There is a spicy red tomato base one that I think I liked the best, a Honey, and a Sweet and Tangy mustard base. The baked potato salad was made with sour cream and chives. I always love that stuff. The mac and cheese was recommended to me by the waitress and she made a good choice. It was very good homemade mac and cheese. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! You may ask what is keeping Cowboys from getting a 5 star? Simple....maybe my biggest pet peeve with a BBQ joint...STINGINESS with the meat! My brisket plate was $10.99 and for that, I received 3 strips of meat that I ate in 9 bites and I really had to stretch it to 9 bites. That's over a $1 per bite. I wouldn't mind paying a $1 or $2 more if I would get more meat. That is why I come to a BBQ joint. I don't want to leave not feeling satisfied. And to add to it, both of my sides were premium sides that costed an extra 50 cents a piece. Everything was great about Cowboys especially the way it tasted but if I'm going to leave and feel like I was not given a good size portion for what I pay, I'm likely not to return. I also would have shared this opinion of mine in person in a polite way if someone at the end would have asked me, "How was everything?" But no one asked so I didn't share except on Yelp!

The funnel cakes fries are perfection and so much easier to eat than traditional funnel cake yummmmmm.

I ordered a 6-inch Onion Chicken Teriyaki sandwich. The employee who took my order asked if I wanted it toasted, and I clearly said yes. When my sandwich was handed to me, the chicken was still frozen. I took it back to the counter and politely asked if they could heat it properly. The employee who had handed me the sandwich told me that I had not asked for it to be toasted. I explained that I absolutely had. Instead of simply correcting the mistake, she walked away from the counter to find the manager. While she was gone, I asked another employee if she could please warm my sandwich because I needed to get back to work. She told me she could not because the other employee had gone to speak with the manager. When I asked why, she said she wasn't sure. The manager eventually returned with the employee, and only then was my sandwich heated. Throughout the interaction, the middle-aged employee repeatedly gave me dirty looks, making an already frustrating situation even more uncomfortable. Mistakes happen, and I understand that. What disappointed me most was not that my sandwich wasn't heated correctly--it was how the situation was handled. A simple apology and a quick correction would have resolved the issue in moments. Instead, I was made to feel as though I had done something wrong, despite politely asking for my order to be fixed. As a customer, I expect to be treated with courtesy and respect. I hope this feedback is shared with the franchise owner and management so they can address both customer service and food preparation practices to prevent other customers from having a similar experience.
