This is going to be an excellent review, but before I tell you why I hold this place in high esteem, let me give you some background. I'm in my 30s, overweight, sedentary, and not used to being around "workout culture", if you know what I mean. I was nervous that I wouldn't really fit in, that I would be left behind in the dust of others who are physically fitter than I, and didn't really know what to expect. However, everyone here is extremely friendly and supportive - not just the staff, who are amazing and knowledgeable, but also the students. The instructors are patient, personable and provide great motivation without shaming you. The workouts are fun and well thought-out. This is more expensive than a gym membership, but it is also so much more rewarding. You really feel like you're part of a family when you train here, and, as for me, I am motivated to keep coming back! They also have classes for kids, and from what I've seen (I'm not a parent but have caught the tail end of some classes before my workout), the kids look like they're having an awesome time!

Professor Marlon has created an amazing atmosphere for BJJ right here in Queens. I immediately felt as if I was a part of the family. Professor and Rafa even tried to get me to compete with the team at a local competition (unfortunately, my registration was too late- that was my fault). For background, I'm a white belt. I've been training for about 6 months. The students offered competitive and challenging rolls, and the Professors and coaches offer amazing instruction. Gi, No-Gi, and even Judo. I checked it out today and our experience from how we were treated at the door was unpleasant and we had to walk out almost right away. The man sitting at the front desk who handed me a paper to fill out greeted my son absolutely wrong. I could not even focus on filling out the paper because I could not believe what I was hearing. Karate is no excuse to speak to a child in a disgusting manner belittling him. He was mocking my son and had the attitude of "huh I can't hear you speak up" response. He told my son he would call him "cheesesteak" or some nonsense. He told my son "what are you here for fitness, swimming??. This was said to imply what exactly because I don't think you even offer that. You are advertising for karate and kickboxing. I asked the man is this how you greet the kids? He said they need to interact with the kids. Is that what you call interact? That was a negative interaction for the first time meeting the child and parent. That was bullying behavior. Behave with respect and professionalism! Not ethical at all because he actually thinks he's talking in the "right" way. He immediately crossed the line. This was just the greeting. I can only imagine getting more into the classes. I told him my son was feeling uncomfortable and he did not even care to apologize. He was only concerned about me giving him the paper I filled out. Why should I give him the paper after that negative interaction? My concern is tending to my son who is there humiliated and crying. Awful experience!
