Overall: 5/5 One of the best martial arts places I've seen…read morein NYC. The Muay Thai instructor on Monday nights is awesome. He cares a lot about the students, and after class gave me pointers on how to work out and be more relaxed... above and beyond the scope of duty. The BJJ instructors were quite friendly as well. They throw you into the deep end here for BJJ... everyone learns the same drills, so there's no "easy different drill". Which can be both a good thing (you learn with rest of class, and you get forced to catch up) or bad thing (you might not need such a specialist technique) depending on your opinion. Value: 5/5 They have a great deal on Groupon, but I think they have a great welcome offer as well. They didn't try to hard-sell you an upgrade when you sign up, and didn't even need a credit card # when I used my groupon. Environment: 4.5/5 Community seems quite friendly. People were willing to help you out, and weren't looking to hurt you. What more could you ask for? Instruction: 5/5 The Monday night Muay Thai instructor is the best martial arts instructor I've seen in NYC. Admin: 5/5 See value section. They didn't try to hard sell and the owner seems quite interested in what's going on in his gym.

My 2 children are doing bjj here at gentle art studio for 2 1/2 years and every morning when preparing for school their main concern is their gee (bjj uniform) is packed for jiu jitsu classes after school... and I was always thinking okay...I wonder why... unfortunately took me 2 years to decide to come and see why... I found myself Cadu and Pacheco are amazing teachers and classes are dynamic and motivating. Gee or no gee. AMAZING!!! It is a family place. An environment for anyone who wants to grow spiritually, mentally and get better health. Thank you guys!!! Osss

Gentle Art? More like gentle fart…read more This academy is structured like a Brazilian social club. (Whites and Hispanics are accepted, other races are unfortunately ostracized.) The culture is extremely cult like and their ranking system is extremely inaccurate. They will guilt trip you into participating in competitions. Pros: Location, academy looks cool. Cons: Toxic culture. Men and women all share the same changing space. The mats are rarely cleaned. They make you take pictures at the end of each class, every class. Your pictures get blasted on their social media accounts. Fake niceness. Gentle Art's high ranked belts have no real skill or talent. They muscle out every technique and have no humility. If you've been around the game and have experience in martial arts/bjj, don't go here. They will not treat you with respect. People will try to hurt you on purpose here. All their good reviews are from students who are just sipping the gentle fart kool aid.

This is going to be an excellent review, but before I tell you why I hold this place in high esteem, let me give you some background. I'm in my 30s, overweight, sedentary, and not used to being around "workout culture", if you know what I mean. I was nervous that I wouldn't really fit in, that I would be left behind in the dust of others who are physically fitter than I, and didn't really know what to expect. However, everyone here is extremely friendly and supportive - not just the staff, who are amazing and knowledgeable, but also the students. The instructors are patient, personable and provide great motivation without shaming you. The workouts are fun and well thought-out. This is more expensive than a gym membership, but it is also so much more rewarding. You really feel like you're part of a family when you train here, and, as for me, I am motivated to keep coming back! They also have classes for kids, and from what I've seen (I'm not a parent but have caught the tail end of some classes before my workout), the kids look like they're having an awesome time!

If I could give 10 stars is still not enough for this amazing judo place International Judo Center…read more(IJC) My 2 teenage sons are training at IJC for 2-3 years and they are more and more excited as the days go on. Initially I signed them up for 3 days a week but they love it so much that they asked to go 5 days a week. YES, 5 days a week and very happy, stronger, more confident, more stamina, very disciplined and organized as well as more clear minded. Not only physically they have improved significantly but academically too. Sensei Saro is top notch judo professional who treats everyone with respect, instills a sense of confidence, guiding my kids to challenge themselves, and to overcome their fears also to believe that nothing is impossible if you are dedicated, to pursue your dreams of being a good judo player and further more... a champion. Before starting judo one of my teenage son was at the lowest he can be mentally, behavioral wise and low school performance. Before it was too late, we spoke to Sensei Saro and we the parents and him came to a consensus that he will start judo. No exaggeration at all.... JUDO TURNED MY SON'S LIFE AROUND THANKS TO SENSEI SARO. Now we are the proudest parents. Not only that he is doing excellent in judo by he happily competes in all competition. My son loves judo now, and he wouldn't give up judo for nothing and nobody. THANK YOU SO MUCH SENSEY SARO. We could never thank you enough for bringing back happiness in our family in my son's life. I'm a little older but not that old to get back in shape and stay that way. Right now it's Covid-19 time so we haven't moved on to BJJ and hard core Muay Thai, but as soon as this virus dies I'm looking forward to learning all of it. We do practice the kicks and punches though. I love how I feel after coming out of the place. But you have to push yourself or you will get nothing from what they have to offer.
