He cares a lot about the students, and after class gave me pointers on how to work out and be more relaxed... above and beyond the scope of duty. The BJJ instructors were quite friendly as well. They throw you into the deep end here for BJJ... everyone learns the same drills, so there's no "easy different drill". Which can be both a good thing (you learn with rest of class, and you get forced to catch up) or bad thing (you might not need such a specialist technique) depending on your opinion. Value: 5/5 They have a great deal on Groupon, but I think they have a great welcome offer as well. They didn't try to hard-sell you an upgrade when you sign up, and didn't even need a credit card # when I used my groupon. Environment: 4.5/5 Community seems quite friendly. People were willing to help you out, and weren't looking to hurt you. What more could you ask for? Instruction: 5/5 The Monday night Muay Thai instructor is the best martial arts instructor I've seen in NYC. Admin: 5/5 See value section. They didn't try to hard sell and the owner seems quite interested in what's going on in his gym.

Absolute toxic environment, I was sparring with one of…read morethe Muay Thai trainers named Brian, it was going good, nice and control and then out of nowhere he tried to knockout me out but thankfully I blocked it. I didn't know how to react at the moment. Also, the jui-jitsu trainer named Kyle is just absolute trash, does not know how to talk to people and got very mad at me and started having a personal vendetta towards me cause I didn't give him a handshake and I recently found he actually went to prison. When I DMed the hinds combat admin about this they didn't do anything about it. I went to their other place in Midtown and the owner Sean actually kicked me out for calling out the BS. I asked for my money back and he refused, it escalated to him getting in my face where I pushed him back and one of the other trainers named Dom came out of nowhere and sucker punched me. I reported him to the police and he left in handcuffs. Sean I think showed how trash and ignorant he is along with the rest of the place. I wouldn't recommend this place to someone who wants quality training

I get that they're going for a very bro coded boxing gym vibe, but the locker rooms in this place were just dirty. Gross stuff in the corners in the bathroom, and the toilet itself looked like it hadn't been cleaned or wiped down in some time. The workout itself was challenging but also had a very small portion of actual boxing for being a boxing gym/class. About 75% of the class was running and conditioning. There weren't enough boxing bags for everyone to have their own, so we switched off with a partner who did other body weight exercises while we boxed. The boxing combinations weren't very complex. The instructor was hard to understand. If this was the only workout available at the time slot I was looking to work out at that day I'd take it, but this was not a great experience for me. That said, if you love running indoors in a circle and don't mind a little bathroom grime this might be your new favorite place.

I have had the pleasure of training many times under the tutelage of Professor Rob Gutierrez (Rob…read moreG) - head instructor of the East Coast United Team. His pedigree is top notch. Rob G is a highly decorated IBJJF medalist, and has trained under BJJ/MMA legends such as Renzo Gracie, Sean Alvarez, and receiving his black belt under none other than Nelson Monteiro of Gracie Barra fame. Rob G brings a unique perspective to his instruction, making many of the techniques that he teaches instantly "click" for his students, myself included, and easily absorbed. One very helpful aspect of his classes is that his warm-ups will directly correspond to the moves that will be taught in class. His passion and talent is clearly evident through his students and their successes. What especially stands out is the PERSONAL attention and care that he provides to each of his students - whether they are a high level belt that trains with him everyday, or a low level blue belt such as myself. After a seminar he gave at the Westchester ECU academy, I messaged him on Facebook with some questions about a few moves that he taught. What do I get in response? A step-by-step personal VIDEO that he made for me, demonstrating and addressing each of my questions! Aside from being wholly helpful in learning the moves, the gesture itself - taking the time to go above and beyond for his student was very moving, and speaks to his character as a BJJ instructor and person. You would do yourself a huge service by training with Professor Gutierrez at ECU Queens, and I am honored to know him.

There is a solid group of consistent female students here, some who have been training under Professor Rob and Coach Vianca since their childhood/teen years, that continue to come here and train as adults at their own will. That alone showed me that this was a tight-knit, safe training environment, and was probably my #1 motivation for deciding to commit my weeknights here. Compared to other academies I have visited, Professor Rob spends a lot more time going into detail when explaining drills, and gives individualized attention to his students. He keeps a close eye on us when we spar, and then tailors the class based on what we need to improve on. You will not get lost in the crowd here, unlike some bigger academies. During class, he accommodates to every skill level and age group, beginner to advanced. If you are an avid competitor in the sport or just an occasional hobbyist, he will help you regardless. He is an excellent, and honest instructor who cares about you improving, and when need be, is tough and pushes you to be better. See you in class soon.
