Just steps from Nuremberg's city center and at the foot of the castle, this restaurant served some of the best sausage and roasted pork shoulder I've ever had. The sausages and sauerkraut were packed with flavor. I couldn't stop eating until every bite was gone. The pork shoulder was just as memorable: tender meat that fell off the bone, with a crispy edge I couldn't get enough of. The dumpling was delicious, too. We did a quick stop in Neurmburg when we were on our way to Munich so we only came for a quick afternoon snack. We ordered 2 bratwurst sandwiches with a side of sauerkraut. The bratwurst was delicious: savory and flavorful. It had a slight char on the outside, and juicy inside. The roll was just as good. The crust was crisp and and inside was soft and pillowy. I especially liked eating it with sauerkraut which balances out the balance out the grease and heaviness of the bratwurst. There's also service was slow as we learned throughout our trip. It's just the norm so don't expect any quick service. The star of the show rocked. This place was pretty packed when I was there, but I hardly waited and didn't wait long for the food either. I started with a radler which was delicious. For my meal, I ordered 8 sausages with potato salad. The sausages were amazing. If I wasn't a broke student, you best believe I would have ordered at least a dozen more. That's not to say they weren't filling; rather, they were just that good. The potato salad was good. Not much to say on that other than it is good. Finally, I got apple strudel. This left me a bit disappointed as it was average at best. Another year another visit. Have to raise my review to a 5. We actually ate here twice during our four days and they were on the same day(our last day). We loved the bratwurst so much we had to have more so we did. They were fully booked for the evening but the manager made an exception. We were lucky. We ordered the same thing. The white asparagus and the plate of 8 bratwurst with potato salad. It was so good we would have eaten here again but it was our last day. The brats are some of the best we have had in Nuremberg. They cook on a live fire in the middle of the restaurant. I just watch in amazement. I asked on my way out and was told they cook about 15,000 each day. That's a lot! NUREMBERG is an amazing town. This little restaurant has been around for a good many years and always busy. That being said, maybe its busy right now because of the Christmas market. I cannot say. It has a small menu but good taste and atmosphere. Wait staff are quick and efficient. If you need a table for 2 expect you maybe sharing a table with other patrons. Sausages were accompanied by sauerkraut, bread and mustard. (Bread extra, Kraft extra). As I mentioned, lots of atmosphere. Since I had no car I can't speak of parking. This is one of the oldest restaurants in the world and is the oldest restaurant in Nuremberg. Their sausages are grilled over an open beechwood fire, just like in the Middle Ages. It is super, super popular, so be prepared for a wait. They also have a seating limit of about 45 minutes during busier times, so make sure you keep that in mind. We opted to get an order of 6 grilled sausages with one side dish. We also had an order of Bajuvator Käse, which is a savoury, creamy Franconian cheese speciality that is served with farmhouse bread. This was really neat, as we had not fried any Franconian cheese yet during our trip. It was recommended by a local lady who shared the table with me at a small cafe for a drink. Although she gave me a couple of places for best food. This is one of them on my way back to the hotel. I ordered grilled sausage and cabbage as well as a beer. The price is very reasonable but food is excellent, esp. the cabbage preserved with black paper. One of my favorites... located across City Hall and just beow the St. Sebalduskirche, this one is a draw for tourists, but locals also frequent here, because you cannot pass up Nuernberger Bratwurst. It has rustic inside as well as outside seating. Roasted over a wood grill, these tiny little finger sized brats, specific to this city, pack a wonderful flavor you just cannot get elsewhere. Order them by the hald dozen. 'Sechs auf Kraut' for the smaller appetite. Kraut goes perfect with it, potato salad is great with it too. I say simply get both. And don't forget to add a roll or a pretzel to sop up the juices. And a beer, you can't go wrong with the beer here.. or anywhere in Germany for that matter. read more

Blew my socks off! A local friend recommended this place as it serves the local "Original Nuremberg Sausages" prepared in the traditional way (from the 1300s!).. I typically am not a fan of sausages due to textures, HOWEVER, this was 1000% worth giving them a try. The sausages were flavorful and the texture was *not that creepy rubbery popping sensation. They are pan fried and home made - I think this does a lot to preserve the quality of the sausage. Not that these traditional sausages are small, just a few inches in length so you're able to manage the quantity easily with their multiple plate options. These sausages are accompanied by a side dish of your choosing -- though they were generous in recommending and allowing me to split my side dish in half so I could get the homemade sauerkraut and potato salad. And boy was that worth it. sauerkraut gets a bad rap... In this case it was a delicious pairing with the rich sausage with its tanginess. The potato salad was both smooth and chunky with softness of flavor I can place - unlike the other items in the plate, this was served room temp/cold (not hot) and balanced beautifully. Lastly, I got a pretzel - it was delicious but a little hard for my tastes, I prefer a doughy pretzel. But you could taste the freshness in the bread and salt.. so still worth tasting. In addition, the service was great! The Germans seem to really like their reservations, often resulting in unavailable seating at popular restaurants. However, they offered my a table upon my arrival and served me a bit later (maybe 15 minutes). My waitress was lovely, happy to offer recommendations and kind when I asked if she spoke English. They all seem to be in no rush to kick me out of here (nor any other restaurant in Germany), so it looks like I'll need to grab their attention to pay the bill. On a final note, for good and bad, this restaurant is in the heart of the tourist area. Because of this, my friend indicated their prices are a bit high for what you can find elsewhere. My husband and I went here to try the traditional German cuisine and it did not disappoint! We had the traditional sausages, sauerkraut and potato salad. All 5 Stars! I also got a beer called Tucher cellar beer. So good 5 stars. What made the experience less than enjoyable was the service. Our server was so rude and impatient with us. We had just sat down not even opened the menu and she was coming by to take our order. We politely asked for a few minutes and she signed heavily obviously irritated and walked away. I kid you not 5 seconds later she came back and we still hadn't had time to look so we rushed and made some quick decisions about what to order. Thank goodness our decisions came out good. I have passed by this place numerous times while walking around Nuremberg. I decided to stop by this time since my parents were in town and they have never been to Nuremberg. This is the oldest restaurant in Nuremberg and officially the oldest sausage in Europe. Despite it looking like a decently sized restaurant on the outside, the inside was kind of small and cozy. It was packed when we arrived, but luckily, there was a small open table for us. The dining area surrounds the grill area, so you can see them cooking food as you wait. Of course, we had to order Nürnberger bratwurst. They didn't have any special flavor to them, that I could tell, compared to any other bratwurst I've had in the country. Also ordered pork knuckle, thinking it was schweinshaxe (roasted pork knuckle), but it was boiled. I did not really like their boiled pork knuckle, but could also be because I was expecting/thinking/hoping it would be the roasted kind. All in all, we enjoyed our visit there and I would say it is worth a stop, after all, it is a Michelin Guide (not starred) restaurant. read more

Dessert was a little underwhelming but tasty. The 2nd time we stopped in was for the ?weckla? Sandwiches. These are to-go only. You have to go inside to order. My friend claimed that these were the best bratwurst in all of Nurnberg, and probably Bavaria, so I definitely needed to give it a try. The place is a restaurant, and if you sit down they give you a good variety of different types of breads. However, if you want just the bratwurst, you can head towards the back of the restaurant, and they sell them there for you to take away! The sandwich was good, and the bratwurst itself was also really good, being cooked well and nice and juicy, but I wouldn't say it blew my mind or was uniquely more delicious than any other bratwurst. Nurenburg is known for many things... The famous Christmas market, the Gingerbread Lebkuchen, and Drei Im Weckla, or 3 in a bun sausages. I went to the popular bratwursthaüsle located behind the St Sebald church. You can dine there or get a sandwich to go. The sandwich is only €2,50 if you take it to go, and it is truly a bargain! So, here's what you do. Upon entering the dining hall, there's a window on the right. Place your order, get a ticket. Walk over to the grill and pick up your bratwurst. While waiting, you can smell the smoky meaty char-filled goodness! There's condiments next to the pick up area. Quick, simple, cheap and yummy! I found out a day later in Regensburg that their Bratwursthausle gives their customers sauerkraut and mustard. This place did not. Therefore, 1 star less for not offering it.. and I did spy a pot of sauerkraut next to the grill too! read more

Very good, but not the winner of the sausage war, at least not by our palate. We arrived in Nuremberg via a Danube River cruise. One of the city's many attractions pointed out to us was Bratwursthausle Nurnbürg, one of Germany's oldest sausage makers (since 1313, though the German federal state Thüringen and Franken, part of the federal state Bavaria, are still quarreling about who really has the oldest medieval "Bratwurst" recipe*). Our cruise director, Mario, informed us of a bit of a sausage rivalry between Regensburg and Nuremberg. He said we should be sure to try both famous sausages, and let him know which one we liked best. Well sorry Bratwursthausle Nurnbürg, but Historische Wurstküche (http://www.yelp.com/biz/historische-wurstkueche-ratisbon) wins hands down. We did not enjoy the softer texture of the Bratwursthausle Nurnbürg as much as the firmer texture of the Historische Wurstküche. Second, the more traditional mustard on the tables here was a bit "average" compared to the sweet mustard (Süsser Senf) served at the Historische Wurstküche. But just because we liked Historische Wurstküche more, does not mean that Bratwursthausle Nurnbürg is bad, in fact it was still quite good (just not the winner in our book - but this is a very personal thing and we were even told such opinions might be "fighting words" to use an American phrase). Bratwursthausle Nurnbürg is indeed cozy, with an unexpected twist. Service was cool and efficient, very German I suppose. As we sat, I noticed that my wife's ears perked up. "I hear Vietnamese.", she said (she is Vietnamese after-all). "Not Likely.", I said. But after looking around a bit, we noticed that all four people working at the tiny beechwood charcoal grill were indeed Asian, and speaking Vietnamese. How curious. As we waited for our food an older German couple sat next to us. We even had a small conversation about pets (they had a pet store bag with them). Sitting in the cozy setting I could easily imagine myself far from the city, in fact I suspect this restaurant was here long before most of the city. It was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of Nuremberg. If we lived in Nuremberg, I could certainly see us being regulars, as the environment is super cozy, the atmosphere friendly, and Vietnamese chefs intriguing. It's still a dining experience not to be missed (especial if the weather is nice enough to sit outside, or for a quick "to go" order). I could definitely see me taking advantage of the "sausage on a roll to go" concept (pay at the door, give your ticket to the people at the grill, pluck your wrapped sausage from the basket on the counter, add mustard is desired). I suspect this may be a German/European thing, but do notice that napkin over the bread basket. That means that the bread, and pretzels, are not free. You will be on the honor system to tell your server how much you ate, but I have a feeling they know already. If in Nuremberg, I would highly recommend trying this delicious sausages, either at this location, or at the other location Das Bratwurstglöcklein. You're coming here for the BRATS - that's what they do. Look for the smoke coming out near the big church! The menu has a few other options, but the Nuremburgers are truly delicious and cooked on the wood grill, giving them an extra tasty flair. The place was packed, and reservations are recommended, at least for dinner service/peak times.
