Smothered chicken with side salad
Benjamin S.

Brasa is a small but mighty restaurant. Mighty in their food quality and friendly staff, that is. FOOD: can't go wrong here. I got their smothered chicken and a side salad. Portions were not super large, but flavor and filling-ness was great. SERVICE: above average and friendly PARKING: I had no issues but their lot was small AMBIANCE: it's a small place but welcoming and fun.

This review is soley for the food. When I hear buffet, I think you pay a certain price and you can…read morego back a few times. I got there a little after noon after visiting Paisley Park. There was no one to greet you, I think this is mostly a take out place on the weekdays. I go into the back where I see a buffet looking area, before that i see that there are two papers on the wall. A price for in-dining, per lb and a price for take out. There is a young man there and I tell him I'm eating in. He takes a plate, and loads it which what I want. It's a shame its by per lb, because there were so many good item so to try, but I could only put so much on the plate. I got greens, yams, black eyed peas, bbq chicken leg and mac n cheese and jerk spaghetti. The food was overall good and I loved the jerk spaghetti and bbq chicken leg the best. I wanted to try some other stuff but I wasn't going to pay another $20 something for it.

*I did not dine at the restaurant*…read more My review is based on my job ordering Mama Sheila's for a BHM luncheon. They ordered bbq chicken, smothered chicken, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, green beans & cornbread. If i'm being honest none of the food looked appetizing in the serving trays so I was already skeptical. I've always kind of heard mixed reviews about MS but it was still on my list to check it out. My job allowed us 1 meat option, 1 side + green beans and cornbread. I got the bbq chicken and it was sitting in a watery bbq sauce (which was explained by a coworker serving it as it's a bbq gravy?) I got the baked mac and cheese, which a soul food restaurant should be able to deliver... it was just salty! The cheese burnt on top was inedible and it overall it wasn't good. The cornbread was really dry. Overall not good.

We went to Brasa with my partner's parents while they were visiting us in town. We decided to walk…read morehere since we're not too far away and it was a nice evening. When we arrived, I was surprised with the size of the -- it was bigger than it looked outside and it was also connected to the coffee shop next door. It was pretty quiet, but I think that was to be expected as it was a Sunday night. The person serving us was attentive and nice. They also gave us some advice on the menu which we appreciated! The menu was centered around their meats for the mains and an extensive menu of sides. We are vegetarian and appreciated the clear indication of what was veggie friendly -- and there was a lot! The sides were great overall. We got the grits, yucca fries, and the romaine salad. The grits were hearty, rich, and cheesy -- just how you'd want them! The yucca fries were crisp and the sauce was AMAZING, especially with some of the hot vinegar on the table. The salad was good, but the dressing wasn't very flavorful. We got the Tofu Sandwich as our main. It was packed to the brim and the veggies were great. The tofu also had a good texture. That said, it wasn't as flavorful as we would have liked. I wished they would have put the sauce from the yucca fries on it, but we had extra so we put it on and it was great. Overall, I'd say the prices were reasonable if a little pricey for vegetarians. We would go again, but mainly because it's in walking distance.

Our orders were taken quickly by our friendly waitresses and our meals came out in a timely manner. They were happy to accommodate a few special requests regarding our food choices, which I appreciated. We all enjoyed our meals and the various sides we ordered. I thought there would be a little more meat on the plates, but it was still enough to be a satisfying meal. It was kind of loud in the restaurant, but if it had been better weather we would've sat outdoors.

What I support for this establishment is less about its food but more about its message and the way…read moreit serves communities. Ever since 2020, the climate surrounding the George Floyd Square has changed dramatically, and this establishment has become an even stronger integral part of the community as the square itself had represented how the community thrives with its people. A lot of respect for the establishment from that perspective. In terms of food, I would say the soul food, which contained mostly sides, were the main highlight for me. The mac & cheese was salty enough. The fries were solid in a "you can't really go wrong with it" type of way. The candied yams had enough sweetness. The collard greens could taste better but standards must be lower when they're not homemade. I also enjoyed the catfish fillets as they were fried to preserve enough hotness and softness. A lot of what they served, they made on the spot, which was what may be causing longer wait for some. Meat-wise, a lot of items could use further improvement because they were too dry, such as the smoked wings and the beef brisket. The wings were dry to the point that they condensed and got extremely salty. The brisket relied a lot on the sauce and the existing fat on the meat for juiciness while the meat itself didn't have a lot of flavor or juice. As for the ribs, they had some seasoning, and tasted just fine, and weren't as dry. But I have had ribs in Texan barbeque places before and knew what "seasoned" ribs were like and therefore concluded that the ribs here were not spectacular. With all that said, however, I still will return here as often as I can because I love supporting this business. The person serving me was very hospitable and patient. I still got some pretty solid barbeque even if it's not Texas. Besides, outside just the barbeque food, the soul food was solid, like I had mentioned above.

Ribs smoky and savory, flavorful from first to last. Beans delightfully sweet and tangy. The greens extremely well seasoned with some heat. I went from so hungry to absolutely ready to lay down for a food nap. This is a true personal-service hole in the wall. They were out of a few things. But what I got was perfect, so why would I care?
