Upstairs, how can you not love this!!
Victor H.

Take notes everyone, this is what libraries should look like! Modern chairs, book shelves, tables w/ outlets & USB connections, tablet rentals, video game sections, teenager rooms, study/conference rooms, a quiet study room, stairs that double as benches, and a humongous video and book catalog... Phew! It left me dizzy exploring all this but it left me amazed at all the features and blessed that it's close to my location/residence. Not to mention the hours have them open late on Friday and Saturday night if you want to get your study/reading on late (I'll have to verify that on one of these nights).

Level 1 kids area.

Amazing. This is what a library in 2018 should be. We rented two tablets that had specific curriculums on them for our two girls, to practice math facts. Tons of spaces to reserve for quiet study or collaboration. A makerspace tops it off. They were out of a few books I searched for but you could download them on any tablet/reading through the library app. They had an excellent selection of children & YA books. My only hope is that they can be open longer on Sundays. Always check the hours before heading over.

Love this library! Very clean and organized! The staff was very helpful all while being cautious of social distancing.

Herndon Fortnightly Library - Quiet study area

Herndon Fortnightly Library

I know Fairfax County libraries typically have the same offerings, but this one is unique and…read morespecial to me. I love how accessible this library is for walkers and bikers in the town of Herndon. You can enter from the bottom floor or the second floor from the outside. The bottom floor has conference rooms, a foyer with seating, local bulletins, and the Maker Lab. The top floor is where there's a huge communal quiet room with dividers for individual studying, the books, and computers. I would recommend chatting with any librarian here to find out everything the library has to offer. It is a LOT. I am a fan of the Maker Lab.

We were new to the area and it wasn't hard to get a library card. Initially we went to the help desk and were redirected to the check out counter. Once we gave them basic info like a piece of mail with our address and phone number we were able to get library cards and info about the Libby application for ebooks, audiobooks and magazines. New in 2022 there is also Kanopy, an on-demand streaming video service. Each account is assigned 5 "play credits" per month. There were a decent number of international and indie titles to choose from. Overall the library is smaller than others I have been to but it seems cozy. There seems to be a regular board game meetup that meets downstairs on Saturday. You should show up earlier rather than later from the specified time range though since after they form groups and start playing it may be harder to join in on a game until one group finishes their play session.

USO - Place to chill

Excellent USO. Friendly volunteers are always happy to greet and welcome you in. There are plenty…read moreof comfy chairs, charging banks, big tv, a library of books, and compared to some USOs, their WiFi actually works, too. There are lots of snacks scattered around the place in various baskets of candy, chips, gum, etc. The main "kitchen" counter usually has mixed nuts, pretzels, cheese or peanut butter cracker packs, popcorn, granola bars, instant oatmeal, sometimes sandwiches or bagels, rice krispie treats, and cookies. One time they even had full boxes of Girl Scout cookies. Score! Check out the fridge because you can usually find some goodies in there, too - string cheese, yogurt, juice boxes, chocolate pudding, just depends on the day. They also have the obvious bottled water and soda. The brewed coffee tastes like Army coffee, so you should feel right at home. ;) My one complaint, as with each and every USO, is the lack of any fresh fruit or vegetables. Did anyone ever think our military should be healthy, or is that overrated? However, when you're dealing with donations, pre-packaged food seems to be the name of the game. I don't blame the USO, they're just offering all of these treats for free. And for that, I am truly and sincerely thankful. 'Merica.

We went to eat and came back and the staff that replaced them were rude and disrespectful, even asking my daughter what her disability treating was before making them leave. I would sit on the floor of the terminal before I ever go in that USO and deal with these people again. If this is where the USO is now, they have lost their mission altogether.
