I initially texted Christy on May 28, 2025, at 5:32 pm. In the text, I told her my natural, African…read moreAmerican hair was almost shoulder-length, with a mix of four distinct curl patterns, and I was looking for a stylist who could provide a gentle shampoo and a "trim". I explained my haircare routine: I do not use any chemical processes or heat styling. I avoid products with sulfates, sulfides, parabens, or heavy oils. I also let her know I have a severe allergy to Argan oil. My hair is 90-95% gray. To be fair, I knew the ends were dry, and buildup from styling products had caused some yellowing. I had recently begun using Olaplex No. 4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo and CURLSMITH - Double Cream Deep Quencher - Vegan Moisturising Deep Conditioner to address these issues. On July 7 at 2:58 pm, I spoke with Christy on the phone and reiterated what I said in my text, I was looking for a TRIM. Based on our conversation and her 5-star reviews, I scheduled an appointment for the following week. When I arrived, Christy repeatedly told me the ends of my hair were "dead" and all needed to be cut off. Then, with complete disregard for the TRIM I requested, she began cutting off what appeared to be at least 3-4 inches of hair. I told her no fewer than two times that I was VERY concerned with the amount of hair she was cutting off. Again, she said my ends were "dead". I again expressed concern at how much she was cutting off. She then stretched my curly hair in her hand and said, "To me, it still looks the same length." Anyone with African American hair knows that when we cut off two inches of our hair while it is wet, as the hair dries and curls up again, it looks like twice as much hair has been cut off. I walked into Exquisite Styles with hair that was almost to my shoulders (when completely dry). I now have hair that does not even reach my earlobes. If a zero-star rating were possible on Yelp, that is how I would rate what was done to my hair.

Said hi to Dyson who replied "oh you're for me?" I put my stuff down and then he abruptly summoned me to have a seat in the back of the salon. Thinking he was about to wash me, but NO. He tugs on my 4c hair and says "I don't do short hair." I replied "okaaaay, your website, booking, not your own confirmation email stated that." He replied "well, I'm telling you now so send a request for your deposit back." Then he walked away leaving me stunned, confused, and embarrassed. Then he came back with a look like "you're still here?" I said "uhm, I'm confused, embarrassed, and inconvenienced." Then he accused me of going off in him! LOL. This is CRAZY! Wow. I noticed the lovely medium to light skin women in the shop with their softer coils (not curls) and without a doubt I know that my length of hair is not the problem. It's my darker skin tone and 4c hair. The women looked mortified for me and a stylist looked like she wanted to console me but she didn't . His whole attitude was trash.

I'm extremely disappointed with my recent experience at this salon. I booked a partial highlight…read morewith a different stylist because my usual stylist was unavailable. My goal was very straightforward: I wanted to remain blonde while making my hair less high-maintenance. During my consultation, the stylist told me that if we highlighted my hair, it would turn orange. I disagreed based on my previous experiences with partial highlights, as I have had them done multiple times without this issue. We ultimately agreed on lowlights in the bottom section of my hair and highlights on the top. What I was not told was that my hair would essentially be completely dyed brown on the bottom or that lowlights would be placed throughout my hair, including areas where I specifically wanted to remain blonde. An $86 gloss was also used without me being told the price beforehand. The gloss significantly neutralized my hair, leaving me with a neutral brown base and icy highlights around my face. The end result is very different from what I discussed and wanted. Neutral tones wash me out, and I immediately disliked the result when I saw it. I also feel that the explanation that my hair would have been orange was not an adequate reason for the outcome. If there were concerns about the underlying tone, I would have expected those concerns to be discussed with me and for us to come up with an alternative that still aligned with what I wanted. Unfortunately, my experience after the service was also upsetting. The stylist's friendly demeanor changed noticeably during the appointment. When I immediately expressed that I hated the result, I felt that my concerns were diminished rather than genuinely listened to. She even referenced a story I had casually told her about having dark hair during my sophomore year of high school. That story was actually about how unhappy I had been with having dark hair and how my mom eventually got my hair highlighted as a birthday gift. Bringing it up in that moment felt particularly dismissive of what I was trying to communicate. I do appreciate that the salon has scheduled me for a redo on Tuesday. However, because I was so unhappy with the original service, I called and requested to have the correction handled by a different stylist. I understand that hair color can be complicated and that results aren't always perfectly predictable. What is most upsetting to me is that the service I received did not match what I understood we had agreed upon, I was charged $86 for a gloss without being informed of the cost beforehand, and when I expressed how unhappy I was, I did not feel heard. I hope the salon takes this feedback seriously, because I came in trusting them with my hair and left feeling extremely upset about the result.
