I've been taking drums lessons with Brady for severals months now and have been really pleased with the entire experience. I'm not sure what I expected when I decided to start taking lessons, but I was anticipating dabbling in a new hobby and thinking maybe I'd stick with it for a little while and maybe I wouldn't. Highly recomended. I've been studying drumming with Brady for the past year. Prior to that, I had never studied drums. Brady does a great job of balancing technique and music reading with whatever type of music the student enjoys. Brady's focus on technique is welcome as this not only helps improve performance but, more importantly, helps prevent overuse injuries. I plan on playing drums for a long time and appreciate the solid foundation. If proper technique is the foundation, music reading is the next layer. Brady is very good at explaining the notation but goes further by really drilling down on the dynamics and artistic expression of the individual pieces. Finally, Brady encourages his students to find music that speaks to them and then work on those pieces. Because Brady is so versatile and talented as a drummer you never can really stump him. He can always break down what the drums are doing in a piece and help the student approximate the sound. By combining these three elements Brady keeps the learning process fresh and moving forward. I had been drumming for nine years before I met Brady. When we met he told me to play him a groove, so I did. When I stopped, he looked at me and said "You have the potential to be really, really, really good." Then, he proceeded to tell me how to turn that potential into a reality. Most teachers would've watched me play and said "Great! So, what do songs do you want to play?" or something weak like that. Brady had the guts to tell me that my entire drumming technique was flawed (a technique, unfortunately, commonly accepted amongst almost every drummer I've seen). This meant that I needed to start my entire drumming career over. I mean, COMPLETELY start over, even though I had been playing the drums for nine years. ...A year later, I've seen myself improve tenfold. I was "good enough" when I met Brady. A typical teacher would've just accepted that, taken my money, and sorta given me little "tips and tricks" to improve my playing. Brady, instead, offered me a form of drummer-redemption. He taught me how to sit at the drum set, how to listen to, interpret, and play to any style of music, and most importantly, he told me how to actually hold my sticks to get the most out of my playing. Brady has been my drum teacher now for about 8 months. I had already been playing drums for about 3 years. The first day I walked in Brady told me the way I was holding my sticks would limit me from further growth. The way I was holding my sticks...like the same way I was holding them for 3 years. Going home to practice that week was rough, I really had to come to grips with letting someone else tell me my weaknesses. After 1 month I was able to adapt the grip and play better than I was before I did. From that day I have never questioned Brady's integrity. He had the balls to take a risk and tell me what I don't want to hear. This is exactly what a great drum instructor has to do, and many will not do this. I first started taking drum lessons with Brady when I was 11 years old and took lessons with him for a year due to a move taking me out of San Jose. I continued to play and took lessons from a private instructor again for the next 4 years. The only reason I stopped is because my playing demand started to stretch from what the instructor could offer. I am now 21 years old, in college, and still playing. If it were not for all that I learned in that one year with Brady, I would not be where I am today. I am currently on a scholarship to play the drums at my university, and I owe most of it to Brady.
