I heard great things about this place and was really looking forward to going. BUT their website did not list what hours they were open! One place said they close at 9, this website says 8 - and that it files not open until 4. I tried calling without success and their message did not state their hours either. Finally, figuring they would be open by noon, I drove there -and it was closed. The outside did not state their business hours either. My only clue of their possible open hours was on this website. A note to the business - if you want business, state CLEARLY when you are open for business. read more

Just a little local ice cream stand sitting across from Lake Chautauqua in Mayville. Boxcar Barney's has a big menu board with both soft serve and hard serve ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes and the like and some coffee drinks. You order at right window, pay and then pick up your treats at the left window. There are a couple of picnic tables and some benches to enjoy and watch the lake. We stopped by for some ice cream. The portions were generous, the prices reasonable and the ambiance casual. I got a cup with Brownie Batter and Salty Caramel Truffle ice creams. The ice cream was great, sweet and rich, plenty of flavor. I especially liked that the hard ice cream was served at the perfect temperature, soft but not fully melted so that it has a great mouth feel. Based on the flavors offered and the quality of the ice cream, I would guess that Barney's is serving Hershey's Ice Cream. A nice little quirky place to grab a sweet treat. If you are in the area give them a try. read more

great ice cream, yes high prices but it's a treat. My mom loved her milkshake, rich and flavorful. Great place when you're out by Chautauqua lake read more

Great little "boxcar" near the lake in Westfield NY. Humongous ice cream cones and soft serve. Excellent place to bring the kids. read more

This ice cream may be the best I have had in my entire life. Every one of it's flavors are delicious(I know this because my family tried many many samples) but finally we decided. I ordered a cappuccino crunch with a waffle cone (notice how I didn't ask for a 2 or 3 scoop, just a regular) and I got a larger than my face ice cream that I astonishingly ate from top to bottom. My family and I all agreed that we should come back again, and I highly encourage you to come too. read more

Wonderful flavors generous portions! Get the flight! Bargain 6 different flavors yummmmmm

Went here while on vacation in the area and I was not disappointed. Friendly staff and quick service. Lots of delicious flavors to choose and including some fun ones. I had the 'baby' cone ($3.78) and that thing was massive so I can only imagine what larger sizes looked like, but this was perfect for me. I had the Moose Tracks and Brownie Batter and they were both amazing! If you're near chautauqua lake, I definitely recommend checking this place out. read more

Been to a lot of ice cream stands over the years and nothing beats this place. It's so good that we planned on driving 2-1/2 hours at the end of summer to have one more taste before winter. That didn't work out, but we're already planning for next summer. Yes, the ice cream is among the best there is, and you get plenty for what you pay, but be sure to carve out time to just hang out around back or on the side and just let time stop for a moment or two. Tailgates and lawn chairs are highly recommended. read more

Great stop and large ice cream sizes! Yelp says it's closed but it's still open and delicious!

They stand in line for oversized ice cream cones and dishes. Best ice cream in town.

We stopped here on a beautiful summer day and got a huge cone full of ice cream. I absolutely loved the ice cream flavors they had! My partner did too. We walked over to the really pretty mural that's right nearby. It's nice because you can see Chautauqua Lake while you're eating your ice cream. They should ensure that they enforce the mask wearing in line. I would definitely return here! read more

I love to come here every time I'm in Chautauqua for the summer. It's in a wonderful location just by the lake, so you can cross the street for a splendid view. The scoops are tremendous in size, so I like to get a double scoop and share with a friend. Cappuccino crunch is the best, and butter pecan is a close second read more

Delicious ice cream. But ridiculous size portions. I got a small and my hand was covered in ice cream before I could even lick it. The small could have been for 4 people. And then they charge you 25c for a bowl when you're obviously going to need it. I watched another woman ask for a bowl and while waiting her massive ice cream fell right onto the counter. Portions are ridiculous read more

Great ice cream!!! Boxcars is a Mayville institution. I go there every time my grandkids are in town- they just love it.

The portions are HUGE and they have an awesome variety of flavors- and recently new owners really made it look great. Vegan and gluten free options are clearly laid out and pretty delicious! They have milkshakes and ice cream flights so you can try 4 flavors at once. GIANT freaking scoops for less than $5-- and good ice cream to boot-- this place is a find! I'm 90% positive you can't find anything other than Perry's or Hershey's ice cream on Chautauqua lake, however, this is an adorable twist on the ice cream stand! Ice cream is perfectly fine, nice repertoire of flavors. The serving sizes are enormous, including the volume of toppings you receive if you choose to order a sundae or the like. The branding, decor, and atmosphere are on point. Everything is clean and well kept. There is ample room for kids to play and some large lawn games. Only drawback is that there is no onsite bathroom. You can access the bathroom at the park across the street, but it is a little bit of a hike if you have a little one who needs to get immediately. My point being, if you have little kids, make sure to go AHEAD of time. This was a delightful experience and we will be sure to return! read more

Best ice cream in the world. And I'm lactose intolerant and somehow it doesn't make me sick.

Excellent little ice cream stand. Highly recommend! I don't have much to say other than my cone was super tasty, and I would definitely return. PS portions are HUGE. I find the baby size to be more than sufficient. read more

Ordered a vanilla milkshake, nothing exotic. As I was waiting for my order people who were behind me in line started getting their orders first. I brought it to the attention of the worker who was handing out orders and she said there were orders in front of me yet. Four people in line behind me received their orders before I did even though I brought it to the attention of an older young lady who I assumed to be the manager. She also told me there were people in front of me. It is not difficult for me to know who was behind me in line. It would also have not been difficult to check the order time on the tickets instead of telling me there were still people in front of me when there was not. Poor service and they just blew me off. read more

Boxcar Barney's is the best ice cream stand I have ever been to in my life! And with recent ownership, I couldn't be happier. The place has really been updated and spruced up: new furniture, new paint, new menu offerings, and new menu appearance. It's amazing. We randomly got the owner to be our cashier and we were treated with fantastic service. Thank you boxcar Barney's! Hershey's Ice cream that rotates through out the year. I have a new found appreciation for Hershey's Ice Cream. Seriously I wish that it was more readlily available where I live. Very cool place with a very excellent selection. The prices are good and the portions are huge! Seriously, if you normally get a large, get the medium. Seems to be a popular spot and I can see why. They have Hershey's brand Ice Cream, which is always good, & their food is acceptable (although their fried food is occasionally cold), but don't come here if you're in any kind of a hurry. Maybe the staff will be faster as the season goes on- it took a full 20 minutes when there were only 3 groups on line. Oh, and get a baby size- their portions are disgustingly huge. read more

I LOVE this place! When I was a kid, on the weekends my family and I would swim across the lake and visit this place. The cones are big and the flavors, to quote Barney from "How I Met Your Mother" "AWESOME"! The one flavor that I always got was bubble gum, that actually had whole pieces of Chiclets in it, not just artificially flavored added, but real pieces of gum! I gotta go back to this place to revisit some of my childhood! Perfect afternoon would be sitting on the lake benches and looking at the sun set, or just whenever. You def. have to go to this place! read more
