My fiancé and I have been here multiple times, and we always leave satisfied. One of the most common themes from all of these visits is the wait time. For every time we've dined here, we've had a reservation and still had to wait about an hour to receive our entrees. The one star knockoff is purely due to lack of speedy service and long wait times for food. Otherwise, the mansion is absolutely gorgeous, and has seasonal menus, so there is always something new to offer each time you visit. They have a unique seasonal cocktail menu, and numerous different types of alcohol/bottles. (I would recommend getting a prosecco glass with cranberry juice in it!) They give out two different pieces of bread, both very good, and they also give out a "bite of the night" or something similar to it, which is a unique small bite full of flavor from the kitchen. read more

This venue is beautiful. There are several rooms which are beautifully decorated. I was here with a large group (21 people) and I think they might not have enough staff. I'd really like to give 5 stars for the taste of the food but it wasn't warm enough when it was served. I asked about the soups and was offered a taste of both which I thought was great. When the samples came they weren't hot. Barely warm. I ordered one of the soups and told the server it wasn't warm enough and asked to make sure it was warm when it came out. It wasn't. Butternut squash creamy soup with a piece of smoked salmon in top. Interesting. Very creamy but I couldn't taste the butternut squash. It was nondescript but since I'd tasted both and didn't like the other I felt I did have to order one. The smoked salmon added saltiness and actually made it nice but I think you'd have to look forward the squash. And, it was only mildly warm. Husband ordered the paella. I tasted it, of course. The fish was overcooked, the scallop I had was sweet and cooked well. The rice was decent, but, instead of the rich saffron scented taste I expected, this tasted of chicken broth a la rice a roni. And whereas it was good, it was nothing special. He said the shrimp and mussels were good. I ordered Tuscan shrimp which was billed as shrimp and ravioli in sun dried tomato cream sauce with spinach. There were 4 good size ravioli covered in a cream sauce- not Alfredo- and there were bits of sun dried tomato sprinkled on it. Tasty but not sun dried tomato cream sauce. There are 5 or 6 good size shrimp that were delicious and cooked just right. This was a delicious dish and would have been 5 stars if it were hot. It was warm, not wArm enough though. Same for the paella. And everyone at our end of the table said the same thing. Neighbors had Mac and cheese with meatballs which they said was ok, chicken cacciatore which they said was covered in red pepper sauce which they said was good but that the chicken was dry. Didn't talk to anyone else about their meals but the chief complaint was that nothing was hot. And the service was uneven- we were served a long time before the people next to us were served their meals. This place is a venue for weddings and parties. One would think they could keep large numbers of meals hot and out at the same time. I would like to give 5 stars for my shrimp dish's taste. My husband said his paella was a 3.5 But serving the meals at low temp just knocks it down a few pegs. Dinner included a very small piece of crouton with tomato topping. I guess it was bruschetta bouche amuse. Tasty but tiny. The servers were very nice and I think they were doing the best they could. Not their fault. Lovely ambiance but expensive. For the prices, I expect hot food. read more

We were very happy with our dining experience at Box Hill! We pulled up to the mansion which was very scenic. We walked in the door and were greeted by the host. She was very pleasant and took us to our table. The menu had fantastic selections. Each person in our party ordered something different, and we were all very pleased with our meal. Beautiful setting. Wonderful staff, great food!! If you want a place for a special occasion, definitely give them a try! We had Mongolian meatballs and the duck ravioli, both were excellent! We walked the grounds before we dined, and they are beautiful. Unfortunately, with a large white tent set up on the outdoor patio, we were unable to view them while we ate. The airconditioning in the dining area was not comfortable. Even with ceiling fans on to move the air, it was still slightly uncomfortable. The HVAC in the foyer and reception area worked well, so it was the unit covering the dining area that did not function properly. My meal, pork steak, was grossly overcooked. I asked for medium and it looked great on the outside but the steak knife I was provided (after I had to ask for it) had difficulty cutting the food. Our server, was very nice but she and the other server were running around hurriedly. We asked why she was so busy, as there were only a few tables occupied and she replied that someone called out and she was also the bartender. Our server did an acceptable job but the food was not prepared well. I will NEVER return again. read more

I've only heard of this restaurant recently and decided to give it a shot. It's very fancy, and the atmosphere is gorgeous. My only gripe is we waited at least an hour for our food. A server came around giving out 'bites of the day,' which was a sample of one of their foods. The orange creamsicle cocktail is the best cocktail i've ever had, tastes just like orange cream. My duck was good, a bit fatty but that's just how duck is. My girlfriend loved her bang bang shrimp pad thai and her tomato bisque soup. Made us feel rich for dining at such a beautiful place. The bill was just about what I expected it to be. All in all, it's a very nice place besides the service and we'd go again. read more

Very elegant venue with a pretty classic and homey feel, it was nice to not go to another venue with open concept dining. We had good drinks down at the bar which were good. More of a home bar feel than a commercial venue. We were able to enjoy the new years eve special dinner last minute. Staff was attentive and the food was very good for the york area. Most memorable portions were the snickerdoodle cheese cake and the crab cakes. The wines were a little high priced but it did appear they had south county brewery products on tap, a personal favorite. We were pleased with our visit and will be returning in the future. read more

I hate reviewing 1 star while times are difficult for many local establishments but this has nothing to do with economic shortcomings. We made reservations, arrived for such and doors were locked. 15 minutes later we are still the only ones waiting and the doors finally open. We walk in to no availability for our confirmed reservation yet we are still the only ones there. They then put us in a very dark room, hand us a menu as we asked for a different table. They nicely told us no as they better tables were for reservations. The menu was weak with 3 real entries and mostly appetizers. For such a bill and magnificent grounds, one would expect better. As we left immediately after seating they were nice enough to say goodnight but were excited that the restaurant was empty with nothing to do. Good luck. We won't be back. read more

I highly recommend Box Hill. We have been there for dinner multiple times within the last month and have been beyond impressed each time. This is the best kept secret in York. The mansion is stunning, our servers have been very accommodating & attentive and the food has been excellent each time. Every time we dine there are more and more customers because word is getting out so make sure you have a reservation. Very nice wines by the glass as well as a nice selection of both domestic and international by the bottle. My favorites dishes are the filet, escargot and steak tartar ... oh and the charcuterie ... and the duck ... and the scallops. And they have a pastry chef that makes the most unbelievable desserts as well as all of the dinner rolls etc. etc. read more

A beautiful venue! This building and surrounding gardens are exquisite. We went for a gourmet dinner but received a typical banquet meal - overdone filet, dry chicken breast, and salmon (the best of the choices). Looked like they spent more time on their wine list than preparing the food. The salads were good and the desserts were really good. We had a rather large group and it took longer to get our correct checks than the whole meal took. It was anything but an exceptional experience - mediocre at best. read more

Made reservations for Valentines Day several weeks in advance. Prix fixe menu. We waited 25 minutes before our server came to see us and took a drink order. Spoke the manager who assured us that he was taking care of it. Finally, after another 35 minutes we left. Table next to ours had been there an hour and 15 minutes and still hadn't received a salad. Cannot understand why a place that had a prix fix menu couldn't be better prepared for a big night. Incredibly disappointed and will not be returning. read more

We made reservations via open table Wednesday evening for dinner at 6:45 for Thursday May 26. We arrived at 6:30 nicely dressed for our a nice dinner to be told that our reservation was not listed even though I had a confirmation from Open Table. The host informed us since that they were so short staffed in the kitchen, they informed Open Table three hours prior to stop taking reservations. However, our reservation was made 24 hours prior! The host apologized, but we came for a nice dinner, not apologies. Management wasn't concerned enough about this inconvenience to come have a conversation with us about a possible solution. Food is very bland. It's so frustrating to trying to find a good place to eat in york. 2 stars for the atmosphere. However, the "pub" looks more like a hospital cafeteria. Spruce it up. Being that I live in Wyndham hills it would be so nice to find a place close by, with flavorful food and that old mansion feel. read more

Very nice ambiance. Okay meal. Veggies not good, mashed potatoes dry. Pork chop just okay and filet same. Service good. Watch wine prices. Assumed that a glass would be between $10 and $16. Our cabs were $23. for each glass. Cab was good but absolutely not great - certainly not for that price. read more

So happy with this venue. Planned a small intimate wedding in under a month. We had our ceremony in the Rose Garden. Then a wonderful meal in the dinning room. There were only 11 of us, so it was very special. All the guests raved about how good the food was. The pastry chef on staff make a beautiful cake with fresh flowers on top and fresh raspberries inside. After dinner everyone got to explore the Mansion. I booked the Valentine's Day reservation believing that such a fine establishment as Box Hill The Mansion could not mess it up. Everyone says "Don't go OUT to dinner on Valentine's Day evening" (But again.... I thought The Mansion @ Box Hill had this all right and classy!) Our table was positioned dearly around other tables in a dining room near a beautiful fire place. The tables in front of the fire place were empty and stayed empty all night long. My chair was bumped from the back 8 times. Yes, I counted it. One time, I had my water glass in my hand and the chair bump, spilled my water onto my table. We waited 45 minutes for our first drinks. When the drinks arrived they were the WRONG drinks. We then waited another 30 minutes for our second set of drinks. The waitress said "Sorry" and that she would Comp one drink. She did NOT ! Three times a waitress or waiter tried to give us a salad BUT we had NOT even been asked YET to order. The tables around us, un provoked told us they had been there for 2 & 3 hours and we should consider leaving! It was a pre fixed WONDERFUL menu yet my steak was cold & tough. We pre reserved our desserts to go based on the environment. No one came back to ask us IF we wanted another drink at any time during the night. No manager came bye to ask how our dinner experience was. Our check came and NO Comp 1 drink & we did NOT inquire about it because we knew it would add additional long delay. All in all we were there 3.5 hours. I am so disappointed and so sad that I made this attempt to 'Go Out' on Valentine's Day...Never again. So disappointed with Box Hill The Mansion. Kudos to our waitress who was kind and apologetic and trying so kindly to do a great job it was just too much ! The Mansion was decorated beautifully for V-Day too. It looked so pretty! read more
