UPDATE 11/15/21: So far, I have had them work on 2 of my cars on 3 separate occasions. Junior and the family are the most honest people around. #1 Subaru Forester - 5 Speed Manual Transmission Rebuild - Solid work! Drove it around as my daily driver for an entire year with no issues. Felt like shifting gears out of the factory back in 1999. #2 Toyota 4Runner 4X4 - Stock 4.10 Gears to Upgraded 4.88 Gears - My 4Runner now doesn't have the problem of hunting for gears and it keeps up with my lifted SUV with 33" tires. #3 Toyota 4Runner 4X4 - Remanufactured Toyota Transmission Install - The transmission on my 4Runner was going out so I purchased a remanufactured transmission from Toyota. Junior and the family helped me replace my old transmission with the new one and it drives like it did back in 1998! A340F transmissions can be rebuilt, but are known to have issues 1-2 years later. Junior knew about this common issue and refused to rebuild it, take my money, have me come back in a couple years, and take my money again. He was so honest about everything and after discussing it with my Toyota guy, he confirmed the A340F transmission is a bit tricky to rebuild it and actually have it last a lifetime. Remanufactured was the way to go and Junior knows his stuff man. I went here for a clutch-job and apparently they drained the transmission lube ( was part of the deal iirc) and never replaced it. The transmission developed real bad noises and I quickly returned and they fixed it. The owner guy was mocking me for being upset. The clutch lasted 3 months and the guys that replaced it said the clutch disk was the cheapest one made (from Korea). It's Like Bozo the clown decided to start a trans shop. First, I'd like to say that Junior at Box and Gear was very thorough with giving information on my cars issue. I took a 2004 Subaru WRX STI that I bought as a project car to turn it into a daily driver for work, but realized it needed some work done before I could drive it full-time. There was a grinding noise coming from the differential, and I initially thought it was the front differential that went out but it turned out to be the transmission. Junior gave me a whole lot of options of what he could do for me and also quoted me a rebuilt transmission and/or a new transmission, but financially it wasn't an option for either one at the time. I finally found a used transmission from JDM Imports, and it was installed only to find out that once I drove it to work right from the lot the transmission was grinding gear from fourth-to-fifth gear. I spoke with Junior about what the vehicle was doing and he informed me that synchro's for those gears were bad. I called JDM and made an appointment for them to drive the vehicle in order to confirm the problem which once Nick from JDM drove the vehicle , he noticed the grinding and upheld their 30 day warranty. The vehicle was brought back to Box and Gear to have the transmission taken out, and replaced with a different one from JDM. Junior noticed my frustration with me having to deal with buying a used transmission that ended up costing less than a rebuilt one, but turned out to be a bad one, so quoted charging me $400 for labor because I the hoops of trying to find a decent transmission. Note to self: If you're having issues with and transmission or differentials please go to these guys because they know what they are talking about and Junior will give you a fair quote compared to other shops. Also, sometimes it's better to just do a rebuilt transmission than getting a used one because of all of the unknowns-- if in the future I have another vehicle that has transmission or differential problems, I'll go a visit Junior because of their knowledge of cars and speedy service. read more

We are the original owners of a 1984 Chevrolet pickup model K30 (1-ton 4 wheel drive with manual transmission). We were experiencing difficulty in shifting, unusual noises and on two occasions a terrrible noise while on the freeway. Twice while driving on surface streets when we drove over very bumpy surfaces, one of our front wheels seemed to have locked up, which created a very violent shaking of the front end. We thought the motor was going to shake itself off its motor mounts. We called several places in the SFV for opinions and prices. We then contacted an auto repair center that we have used for years for our company and personal vehicles. The mechanic highly recommended Box and Gear Transmissions in Van Nuys, especially since we have a manual transmission. We brought the truck down for Jesse to test drive and give his opinion. He only had to drive it for half a block and came back. He went under the truck to confirm a few things. He quoted me a reasonable price and I made an appointment to bring it in. When we came down to pick the truck up, JR and Jesse took the time to explain everything that they did. They saved all the old damaged parts to show us what went wrong. The entire clutch assembly was replaced. They found an oil seal leaking in the transmission. They inspected all the gear boxes for damage. They sent the driveshaft out for balancing. They found one of the auto locking hubs damaged and not working properly which accounted for the violent shaking and that the four wheel drive would not work. There were also some bearings and bushings replaced on the truck. Due to the damaged/worn clutch, our clutch pedal was at an angle and not working properly. They replaced the clutch pedal bushing by having a machine shop make another one. While they had the front of the dash open to get to all of this they were kind enough to replace our broken speedometer cable which they found damaged when they had to disconnect the cable from the transmission. The clutch now performs with such ease you would think it was a compact car. All the noise and rattles are gone and the truck now drives like it did when it was brand new. I am extremely satisfied with the work, the price and would recommend Box and Gear no matter what vehicle you have. Their shop is completely fenced in with security cameras. I truly feel they gave me back my truck, which was very special to me. I would give them 10 stars if I could. read more

Stay the hell away from them, my Honda Odyssey got serviced by them two times in two years with a bill of $1800 each time I went for that same transmission. Now the transmission slipping again after a year of being serviced. Also I took my Nissan front tier and I had a weird vibration after they rebuilt the transmission and said it was the driveshaft, A bunch of baloney I change the transmission with a used one and the vibration went away. this place is very unprofessional i spoke with Jess the owner and ordered parts for 2 different cars he said no problem he will have them for me the next day i said OK call me and ill pick them up i called the next day to find out one of the parts didn't come in and it would be coming from Texas instead of Florida and if i wanted it i would have to pay an additional $25.00 for shipping i said no problem please get them for me the next day came and went and no call i called Jess only to find out Jess had no clue as to when the parts would get there i cant under no circumstance tell that to my customer so i decided to get the those parts from a different vendor the same day i called jess the next day to let him know i was on my way to pick up the parts he had for the other transmission he said what about the other parts i said jess i cant wait for you to get them as you dont know when they will be here he said well get the other parts from them as well i dont know with that kind of attitude how this guy stays in business i had every intention to order and buy all of my manuel transmission parts from him but i will choose to go elsewhere i have my business to run and cant deal with unprofessional people such as him self. read more
