Bow Hill Rest Area, I-5, Bow
    Bruce K.

North of Seattle towards the Canada border, this rest area is great for a rest or a walk around. Very useful as the roads are mostly boring and it's nice to get a stretch and take your focus off the highway for a bit. There is a sign "Please limit your stay to 8 hours. No tents or camps." so that's reasonably friendly for those looking to spend the night. On a Friday afternoon, the rest area was quite busy with most spaces taken. The rest room was reasonably clean. If I wasn't in such a rush to get to Vancouver, I'd have stayed longer. [Review 20859 overall - 116 in Washington - 1843 of 2023.]

Nice and calm, Wednesday 20 September 2023.

Adventuring to Bellingham today, Wednesday 20 September 2023, as a solo female traveler, I was unfamiliar with rest areas north of the Smokey Point Rest Area as I had not made it this far north on my own before. Driving northbound on I-5 and starting to think through where I might find a restroom, a sign along the side of the interstate communicated a Rest Area at the next turn-off/exit. I smiled, happy I was paying attention and spotted the sign in time. The rest area was tucked off the interstate and had parking that was easy to maneuver in to. Walkways to the restroom buildings were flat and paved. Two restroom buildings were available for usage, each having men and women restrooms. I found a working water fountain, Washington State map, and sign providing the name of the WSDOT (Washington State Department of Transportation) rest area (Bow Hill Rest Area). Perhaps the biggest perk aside from the tall trees around the parking area was what I felt when I opened the door to the restroom. It was warmth. Turned out the restrooms were heated and as it was a cooler morning, the heat was on. A huge positive surprise. The interior of the restroom was one of the cleanliest I have seen for a WSDOT rest area and I made sure to do my best to not change that.

Bow Hill was the perfect rest stop during our road trip to Vancouver. Held us all over until we got across the boarder. Restrooms were clean. Large parking area. Easy to get in and right back on to the 5.

This Bow Hill Rest Area is on the Northbound side of Interstate 5 at Milepost 238. I stopped in here for a Bio Break on the way back from Skagit Harley-Davidson in Burlington, WA to Bellingham, WA. It's a very basic Interstate rest area. It has Men's and Women's restrooms, a pet walking area, picnic tables, and a bulletin board style information kiosk. As far as I could tell there were no vending machines, but it was raining, so I did not conduct an extensive sweep of the rest area!

Especially the hotel lobby they need to figure out the horrible smell as you walk even my kids were like what's the smell I'm like that's dingy casino smell....just a very mediocre at best casino experience craps staff is horrible and makes playing no fun which was a bummer. Instead of engaging and having fun with the players , they bitched and complained about where we tossed our bets on the table. I have played craps at every casino in WA and never had this happen 5 of us left the table because it was dry and boring to play. Played a few slots really tight so bailed quick. Definitely not a great place to test your luck on slots lol Overall was $500 total for 2 hotel nights so nor bad but the casino is not worth it unfortunately. One thing that was also annoying was the line for the ATMs serious figure that shit out and get more ATMs half of the were "out of service " I would 100% spit this place for Tulalip or angel of the winds any day !

So here we are at the Silver Reef Casino. An open area outside of the crowds. We called the local number to make our reservations and to avoid these online reservations agencies that just inflate the prices. We ended up with a nice hotel with clean rooms. Our room has queen size beds with a medium firmness. This room is clean and spacious. It has a large flat screen TV, a decent sized mini fridge, a dresser for those of us who like to unpack. The A/C unit heats nicely. There is a large vanity for the bathroom and the tub shower offers shampoo and body wash. The bonus to staying at a casino hotel is the addition of security. Less worries about your car. Then there's the restaurants that are available, here there are 5. So there it is, well kept rooms, plenty of free, secure parking, and on site restaurants as well as some adult entertainment before getting some shut eye. Much more relaxing here instead of being in the crowded big cities with minimal parking.

Oh, poo. First stop…read moreon the road trip to California. Left on schedule, making great time down Highway 5, I'm gonna hit Grants Pass before 6 pm!! Woo hoo!! Ferghal and Lola are zonked out and I hate to stop but I *gotta go*. As I make my way to the right side of the highway, the pups perk up and breathe their doggie breath down my neck . Much meefing and wild tail wagging. Pups loves them a road trip --- because that means Rest Areas!! They are dogs --- they are easily pleased. First order of business --- figuring out where the hell I am. I drove past Chehalis, but the rest stop sign *says* Chelhalis. I know that's wrong, but deep down I wonder if maybe I'm driving on some sorta road to hell and I've been unknowlingly driving in the Chehalis vortex --- because if there is such a thing --- it's not in middle of the ocean near Bermuda, No, no, no , it's here. In Chehalis. The place people dream of leaving. I could hardly stand staying long enough to pee. Which brings me to the second order of business: Clean bathrooms (but no toilet seat covers --- that just makes me cranky), free coffee, stale store bought cookies (some road stops have ladies who make cookies, this rest stop was staffed by a couple of retired truckers who found the cookies behind the seat in the rig). Now for the third order of business: c'mon pups... do your bidniss! Holy crap! I mean literally... Holy. Crap. There is dog poop everywhere. Ooooooh geeeeeez. I guess those "pick up after your pooch please" signs you see some places really help --- and if you're not gonna have toilet seat covers --- how 'bout some POOP BAGS!? YES I AM YELLING HERE. It coulda been a nice rest stop too --- couple of tables under the trees. Nice wide paths to walk around. It could have been so nice but for well, the poo. Hey! Look - they have WiFi!! Nevermind. Registration won't work --- I don't think I like this rest stop, they don't even have vending machines. Time to toutle on down the highway.

This was booked by my wife so I went in blindly and wasn't able to do my usual research. I'm huge on making sure places are safe for us as a queer and black couple. We stayed in a suite on the 12th floor. Beautiful room and view. VERY CLEAN. We were able to book a couples massage. The spa was probably the best thing about the entire experience except for a few oddities here and there. The woman we checked in with at the spa was nice enough or least she seemed that way until she thought we weren't going to tip her. Very awkward exchange toward the end but before that we loved the spa and sauna, and the masseuses. Here it is five days later and I'm still relaxed! The relaxation room wasn't very clean and it's where you have to eat (salads and drinks were yummy). The chairs either need to be replaced or steam cleaned. We only got to eat at one restaurant because the two we would have chosen were closed on the days we were there. Journey's East had okay food and the service was nothing to brag about. Just kind of felt like we were sitting in a cafeteria. The pizza place a few steps down (blazin paddles) was delicious. Also, loved the bartender. We also loved the cafe that was open 24 hours. Thumbs down for cedars cafe. Everything on my plate was overcooked. My wife's omelet was overstuffed with raw peppers so she eventually gave up on it. We didn't complain much as honestly only two staff member's in the whole resort made us feel welcomed. We did decide to swim on the first day. I was not a fan of the guy at the door. He was super snarky when we asked general questions about the pool area before we went to our room to change into swimwear. Outside of the resort, I really enjoyed the outlet. I would for sure go back to shop. Ppl there also seem to like Galbi burgers so we stopped by. I would visit Tulalip again for the right concert or market as well. Overall, it wasn't the best (or worst) experience. I also can't say that I felt super safe or comfortable (in the resort) but we made the best of the trip and found enough of it to be worth the drive and money to maybe just do a day trip next time. The community itself outside of the resort was very nice !
