D.Masonry - The scary pillar Before-and-After. (1930's "clinker" brick is supposed to look uneven)

Communication was great, David even called me to let me know he was going to be a half hour late. Fantatstic work. Would hire again.

And I called one other company for a second bid. David showed up in time for our appointment, and his explanation of the problem (80 year old mortar in our brick house was falling out). The previous owner had gotten some of it repaired. That mortar was failing, too. I was particularly concerned because one pillar that carries a heavy load was cracked so badly (see photo) that you could see daylight through it from top to bottom. David explained why it had failed, and how the repair work someone had done years ago made matters worse. His bid that was about the same price as the other firm, but his explanation -- and the bid itself -- were so clear that D. Masonry was my obvious choice. He provided me with proof of insurance, too, a request the other company ignored. They lived up to my high expectations. Watching them work, I realized that tuck pointing is a highly skilled craft, practically an art form. They took the time to mix and try a range of mortar colors. With their help, we selected the one they advised. Now that the new mortar has completely dried, I can see it is a perfect color match. The pillar I was so nervous about? They elaborately jacked up and stabilized things, so they could remove the pillar, which they disassembled completely, laying out all the bricks (with all the old mortar removed), so they could put them back exactly as they were, only sturdy now, and good as new. Masonry repairs -- done well -- simply disappear when the work is done, right? As long as I own this house, my gratitude for this job-well-done will live on.

Job 1 (foundation). Workers good guys and by appearances competent to do job, as was the materials used. They had to bring in backhoe for our 6 ft foundation (we live on hillside with springs where houses commonly shift)- I checked on work and it seemed sound. However, they ran day behind and we had to leave when they backfilled and finish that part of job. It had rained previous 2-3 nights and basically they left yard in a mess that will necessitate me bringing in a landscaper to repair (i.e. more than the topsoil disruption they put in contract- dirt clods the size of soccer balls 25 ft away from foundation wall). My recommendation- make absolutely sure you are present to see finished job before you let them leave- I would never have approved the mess they left the yard in. Not really their fault as they were moving mud vs dirt, but they should've left it and came back the next week to finish. Job 2 (driveway and front approach leveling). It turned out this was an unachievable outcome & there is still 2.5 inch "trip" edge between driveway and garage floor. They should never has bid the job. We contested the job as a breach of contract since goal of job not even close to achieved. Gen Mgr came out & agreed. On my threat to taking to small claims court, they refunded me most of cost of that job. Again, they were responsive to my concerns & outcome OK in the end as avoided court hassle. Lesson here: think about what they are proposing is even possible before agreeing to it. The suggestion is that the job solicitors are working on a commission. If you doubt it can be done, it probably can't- have them describe EXACTLY how they will achieve the proposed outcome. Again, no problem whatsoever with the employees- all did their jobs well.

Some of the additional work that was not done properly by them years ago. I wonder how difficult it will be or if they will even honor their warranty. The company was called Complete Basements and Groundworks bought them out and was supposed to honor the warranty. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this company at this point. If they change their service and at least do what they agreed to do then I will update my post.

After it was taken over by weeds and dug up by our schnauzer a few too many times, it was time to do it right. Cody came out for an estimate and design consultation. He is such a great guy who explains how it all works, gives you a reasonable number of options (helpful for me to not have information overload), and gets things moving. And for the work itself, these guys work hard and nonstop when the job begins. They show up on time and work full speed from morning until evening to get the job done. They build the patios in ways that work for Colorado weather, and they actually specialize in pavers, instead of a landscape company that doesn't do these types of patios nonstop. Paver patios are not cheap, but they're also not something you should do on your own unless you absolutely know what you're doing. If you're looking at redoing your outdoor space or patio, you should absolutely give these guys a look.

Our assigned project manager, Jeremy, was friendly and very professional, had insurance and license info ready at hand when asked, produced a reasonable quote, and did great follow up. The work crew, Freddy and Rigo, were absolutely fabulous.... Neatly and properly dressed, super courtesy while quietly working with the least amount of noise possible, never yelling or blasting music or slamming things around, and they were industrious throughout the day despite the 100 degree heat. These guys were very respectful of the property, demonstrated attention to detail in their work: measuring twice, using levels to make the wall perfect, were careful when moving equipment and product, and when using tools/machinery. They also cleaned up the job site... cleaner than when they first arrived! They didn't damage any plants, and left not a trace of their presence. With other companies and contractors, I have found water bottle caps, candy wrappers, cigarette butts, trampled flowers, bark kicked out on sidewalks, manufacturer stickers/labels laying around from products used or installed, nails or stains left on various surfaces; but this crew of Little Guy Pavers was just the opposite, and just excellent! See the attached before and after photos. Thank you!
