'The Star' breakfast.

Great fast food - amazing breakfast joint in the middle of nowhere. 2 eggs over medium, sausages and all that good stuff. Paid like 7 and change and man was it worth it. Service was spot on. If you're ever heading out of Montreal like I was, hold your breath and wait till you're out of Quebec. This place is great.

People know and love this tiny spot off the highway in Lancaster Ontario, closeish to the Ontario/Quebec border. It's a casse-croute if you're from the Quebec side, with the uniquely local twist of fresh caught perch. I ordered the perch plate which came with lovely soft super fresh pieces of fish, truly delicious with just a twist of lemon. And some perfect fries and coleslaw and a pickle. We showed up with a gang of 12 including some elderly beloved family members who ar ehard of hearing and picky, some vegans, and a baby with allergies. No sweat, the professional staff here didn't bat an eye except to make googly eyes at the baby. Then they brought her a brand new tiny stuffy from the back somewhere! Everyone enjoyed their food and the bill for 12 people with drinks, taxes and tip came out around $120, well worth it for a fun and delicious lunch with some of my favourite people.

Killer Subs. Friendly Service. A completely unpretentious, down-home greasy spoon. Definitely worth a stop if you're passing through Lancaster. In fact, don't bother with the Denny's across the street (service is slow and food is meh); instead, check out Bourdeau for a reasonably priced, fresh, and tasty bite.

Great roadside diner just off the highway at a good halfway point between Toronto and Quebec. Classic offerings with signature clam chowder and perch rolls. I really wanted to try their beaver tail dessert but was too full after just eating the clam chowder and perch roll. Friendly service, constant turnaround of tables when we got there at 10:30 am. Would consider this a regular stopover for future road trips Eastbound.

Awesome foods. Staff really friendly. Best decision to stop there on our way to Montreal. Strongly recommended stop along the 401.

Hoof And Horn

Hoof And Horn

Was there in Potsdam for a meeting and stopped in on a Thursday evening. Even though it's a butcher…read moreshop and called Hoof and Horn, I actually went in for vegetarian options noted on Yelp. The space is minimalist and gives old fashioned turn of the 20th century vibes. There's obviously a lot of pride and a commitment to local foods here. We ordered the night's cocktail special the New York Sipper -yum- the Raquette salad, two of the small (not small at all) plates that were on special that night: the creamy barley risotto and the butternut squash and mushroom parpadella. As a main course, we shared the house-made mushroom burger, savory and flavorful. Everything was fantastic, with many earthy, fresh and delicious flavors and a variety of textures. We clearly ordered too much food, since the small plates were actually full portion-size. Skipped dessert, although the special was tiramisu. They're under a lot of pressure to compete in Potsdam, but they're doing something that shows classical training and a commitment to quality. Several Finger Lakes wines on the list. Prices are astonishingly low for such an excellent meal. Note: tip is included and there were no "lighter" meats like poultry or fish on the menu. Thus the great vegetarian options, I assume.

Not going to lie...first time I saw/heard this place I thought it was just a butcher shop. Then I…read moreheard they had sandwiches and thought it made sense as they were a "butcher shop". Then one day at work everyone was getting lunch here and asked if I wanted to get in on the order and I was like sure, why not, and was pretty amazed by their choices on the menu. Ended up trying/getting the Banh Mi and was pleasantly surprised this came from a "butcher shop" but I learned that day that they are so much more. This place has awards, small town feel, great and hearty foods, friendly staff and they are a butcher shop that you can get some pretty good meats and don't forget Weiner Wednesday!!!! They also have some pretty good salads; their maple vinaigrette is darn good!!! So don't be afraid...come on in and get a sandwich either to sit down or to go.

I have always had a great meal there. Delicious choices. Friendly service. A real gem in Cornwall.read more

What a delight it was to find this family-run place, that is eccentric and very individualistic…read morewhile still catering to what I'd call a baseline of cuisine options. One gets the sense the proprietors just decided on a limited menu of things they liked to cook, a little something for everyone, and have just stuck to that and done everything very, very well. The variety, for example, runs from regional standards like poutine (deliciously done with what appeared to be scratch-made gravy and unusually good cheese curds), PEI mussels, and smoked meat (on brioche!) to some Filipino classics (Adobo! Pansit!) to recipes straight out of Julia Child (salmon with hollandaise, eggs benedict, chicken cordon bleu) to a delicious house special of the only-found-in-Cornwall Cornwall pizza (Edward's, well-recommended) to some nouvelle (a lovely beet salad, a brilliant quinoa paella breakfast melange) to a good old fashioned club sandwich (a dying art). I was particularly taken with the soup of the day -- a tomato basil that sounds plain, but which had the most delicious combination of savory and slightly piquant spicing that was quite unexpected and very welcome. Really unusual. And I take it well that the other chef's special soup was out -- positive proof it's made in small batches fresh. Everything was very tasty, hot out of the kitchen, and fresh. All this with friendly service (well handled in the front of a house by a single server -- we think one of the owners, with a kitchen assistant bringing some things out) and unbelievably good prices (low double digits C$ on everything, which made it very affordable in US$). The decor is a little odd, and the place is a shotgun with only a front window (have they moved? the place looks nothing like previous photos posted here in Yelp), but the vibes and food more than make up for the somewhat strange ambiance. The diners were a mixed crowd as well, and it's always nice to see a place that attracts people on lunch break from their business and students and layabout tourists such as ourselves all in one delicious mix.
