My mother kept waiting and waiting, but it never came -- no cake, no song. This isn't about wanting something free. It's about a restaurant promoting a service, acknowledging it, and then completely failing to deliver it. That's a problem with Boston Pizza's communication and organization, and it ultimately left the server in a difficult position. When the bill came, things got even more uncomfortable. The server directly asked why she wasn't getting a tip and suggested it was because she "didn't do the birthday thing." No server should be asking guests for a tip or pressuring them. Tipping is based on service actually provided. It was my mother's decision not to tip, and she was completely within her rights. When a restaurant advertises a specific experience, confirms it, and then doesn't provide it, the only way for customers to express their dissatisfaction is through the tip. In the end, I left the restaurant holding my Gucci bag in front of my face, embarrassed that a server felt the need to beg for a tip and that the restaurant didn't support her or follow through on what they promote.
