The interior is rustic Cajun inspired, there is a very low sound track of blues playing., with seating for about 12 to 15. Come hungry food is plentiful. We had bluegrass chicken. Blacken catfish and jambalaya. We got an order of cracklings, freshly made spicy and delicious. My wife is allergic to shellfish, she went with the bluegrass chicken it was amazing it has a light flavorful sauce that compliments the chicken. I had the blackened catfish, it was amazing, best I have ever had spiced and cooked perfectly. Both dinners come with their version of red beans and rice, it was different than what I've had but I would say authentic. It too was amazing. My boss had jambalaya it was excellent. All large portions. They are BYOB and literally a liquor store is across the street. This is a hard one to rate. I think the vibe he's going for is New Orleans fine dining but it doesn't quite reach that level. He offers all of the expected fare: Jumbalaya, Gumbo, Ètouffèe, Muffuletta. A decent size menu that averages to 3 stars but with a couple noteworthy exceptions. Overall 4 stars considering ambience and its uniqueness. Why the pronoun "he"? Because it's a one-man operation, the chef also acting as host and waiter. I asked and he said he uses no helpers at all. Pretty amazing. The place was almost empty when we were there (just one other party) and he was kept busy. It's hard to imagine him coping with a full room but apparently he does - mostly. After hearing some muted cursing from the kitchen I learned that he burned the ètoufèe so it wouldn't be offered that night. Too bad; I was going to order that! I had the gumbo appetizer: a generous portion over rice with chunks of alligator and tiny crawfish. More than I expected - almost a meal in itself. I saved half to take home. Decent enough but not really special - except where else are you going to find alligator in Vermont? The wife had crabcakes: heavily seasoned (in a good way) but too little crab and too much filler in our opinion. Good remoulade sauce. My entree was Duck Ragout: a Cajun stew served over rice. Overall the sauce was similar to the gumbo but richer and more complex. Quite good but both sides were disappointing: the collard greens were unsalted and unflavored and the coleslaw was too coarse and lacked tanginess. The wife's was Jumbalaya. Again, competent but not outstanding. She found the shrimps slightly overcooked - and she likes well-done seafood. One good thing about the chef also being the waiter is: no chance for the food to get cold awaiting delivery. When he cautioned the food was hot, it absolutely was! We both saved some of our entrees to save room for dessert. Which, unlike the rest of the menu, are not made in-house. The pecan pie and key lime pie were both very good. We probably should have shared one dessert I suppose. It was a bit much overall. No coffee is available. No alcohol is served. But that's a good thing because you can BYOB which we did. Wine glasses were provided which he kept refilling as needed. Chef told me if I bring rum next time (light AND dark) he would make Hurricanes! On a previous solo visit I had Blackened Catfish which was excellent. And Pork Cracklings which were probably the best preparation of pork belly of any kind I've ever had anywhere. So a mixed review of the food, average to above. But with the ambience (a small brick-lined, warmly lit space overlooking the street a few steps below - see photo), the uniqueness of Cajun food in Vermont, and the one-person operation it gets a solid 4. I did not expect to find a Creole restaurant in Burlington, VT. Empty on a Wednesday evening on my business trip the owner was welcoming. The space felt like I was in someone's home which at one point was probably true. Comfortable and quiet. The pork cracklin' was great to start with. Probably the best food in Burlington. After trying literally everything on the menu, I can say it is all delicious and you are rewarded for exploring, except in my case where my unhealthy love for the shrimp po boy causes extreme pain at the thought of not ordering one, and thus compels me to order one every time I go there. I have eaten about 50 times, only wearing thin if I eat it two days in a row. A 1 man show, the food is very consistent, with the chef has an incredible dedication to his restaurant hosting a 1229 days worked in a row that was recently broken. The only 'negative' is that he has no staff and can only take 1-2 tables at a time so better make reservations because he will bounce you (which he's done to me several times). Great ambiance. Cozy feel. A great addition to the Burlington restaurant scene. Great choices on the menu. I had a special "debut" -- Gator Gumbo which was flavorful and hearty. Great for a cold winter evening and spicy enough to make one's nose run a tad (which is a good thing). Jambalaya was reasonably good. Our chef/waiter was attentive, friendly, and gave us time to relax and enjoy ourselves. Even though we were plenty full, we tried the Kentucky Bourbon Pecan pie-- just sweet and gooey enough and a perfect complement to the meal -- tho I do prefer a pecan pie that's fully filled with pecan. Found a little bit of the south up in the north east. Great eats on Bourbon Street but reservations are recommended as the secret is out on this place. Wish I could have tried more of the menu but only so much one man can eat. Worked my way through some of the menu and some of the specials. Plenty more I would have liked to try but will be back to finish off the menu. I can say they frog legs where done spectacular, the pork cracklings went down easy, and the gumbo was delicious, with the flank steak on the side, and sampled some dessert. I'm also from New Orleans - and the other reviewer(s) (same person with two negative reviews on the same day apparently) is missing the point. I've spent much of my life cooking and serving in restaurants and this one is doing a great job of presenting their interpretation of this classic cuisine. The gumbo isn't the same as mine or my mom's, but it's really good nonetheless. Same for other dishes I've tried there. They're making great tasting food and serving it with a smile. Can't ask for any more than that. I enjoy this place, despite it not being a pure copy of the classic version of every dish. Definitely will return. read more

A client of mine told me about this wonderful place with amazing food and atmosphere where it felt you are being catered to one on one. So, to celebrate Father's Day my wife and I decided to check out this little off the beaten path place and we are extremely glad we did. You do need to make reservations, which is not hard to do, and you can even get one within 30 minutes. The restaurant space is small and quaint, with an ambience and atmosphere that matches the style of the food being served. The décor, music and energy make you feel like you are in a region of Louisiana. Things you notice about the food. First, when you are sitting nursing a sweet tea, you can smell your meal being prepared. Second there is not a rush as your meal is served to you. At other restaurants, you might get your (or within-in-minutes of) main dish meal while you are still eating your appetizer. Here, your dishes come to you just hot off the stove and spaced out just long enough so you can savor the food you just ate and enjoy the smell of what was coming next. The spices of the food were exquisite, with the right amount of kick to it but not so spicy that it would bother you. My partner who is spice sensitive and was concerned about eating the Jambalaya, had no issue in eating it. What is more, the flavors of the food do not just disappear after you finish eating. They linger subtly on your palate as you wait for what is to come next. The full meal was a top-of-the-line experience and I commend the owner, cook & server Richard for the passion for what he does. Such a hidden gem, this side street restaurant presents a perfect collection of Louisiana faves, from gator gumbo to Court Bouillon, Étouffée, to crawfish hand pies. Rick, the chef/operator was very accommodating and showcases his years of cooking experience in the NOLA cuisine that Burlington needed again. Usually preferring raw, I had the grilled oysters, they were sublime, with a great balance of butter and garlic. The Cajun steak sandwich comes on a fresh baked roll, as does the Po' Boy, so tender and delicious! Try the sweet potato maple cheesecake and the key lime pie as a delightful dessert. We went on a Monday around 6:30pm, no one was there and we thought it was closed but the chef gladly let us in with great service. Food was delicious, and the sweet potato cheesecake was amazing!!! I'm from New Orleans. Great grandmother plus is creole and my great grandpa plus was cajun, both on my grandpa's side Yes, they are two different things. Gran taught my grandma and mom how to cook. My grandma is a yankee which is why Gran also taught my mom to cook. Please do not honor this disrespect with your money. I'll just free write my taste buds... So bad, terrible, awful, embarrassing, yuck, People buy this?, People think this tastes good?, and Is this real? Yes, all of these thoughts are real. My Gran would die if she ate any of this. I can't even begin to describe any of it because all I can say is that the Zapps chips are good. My aunt when to school with the Zapps daughter. They sold it years ago but my aunt grew up with the chips at every HS event. They are still so good! I'm crawtator and my mom is jalapeño. We ordered many items because my family wanted me to find a place for home cooking while I'm at school. A few were edible but none were cajun or creole. I mean, you could probably claim the chips. I've never seen a poboys dressed anything like what the chef/owner served. And soft bread is not french bread. The grilled oysters (try Drago's), jambalaya, and red beans (google Blue Runner) were all wrong. The muffuletta bread was 100% wrong but he also ordered it from the wedding cake bakery so that is why (try Central Grocery). He said the boudin was from Florida so I will 1000% NEVER try that (google Best Stop). The website and menu said, "Fresh food everyday!" That is a lie. Most food is made ahead and frozen. Logistically, the chef/owner can not be a one man show and make everything fresh with more than one thing one the menu each day. Plus, you can only freeze crawfish once before it tastes like mush and his had an easy two on it. But the étouffée sauce was good. When he added the fresh cooked shrimp, I wouldn't have known it was precooked if not for the mushy crawfish. But honestly, I bet someone not from Crawfishland (NOT crayfish) wouldn't know the difference. The chef/owner has never been to Louisiana so I can only guess that he's claiming willful ignorance at this point. From our conversations with him, it sounded like a point of pride. Regardless, he's banking on Vermont not knowing any better and eating it as is. I can't imagine what you might think when they go to New Orleans and/or the Acadians, eat proper food, and realize they've been paying for garbage. Because honestly that's what they're buying, garbage. But OMG, what if you go and thing this is right! Please reply to this review so I can smite you! But in all honestly, there was rage to process after this visit. My multigenerational family visited this restaurant that represents our culture in my new home. A home that I will have for years to come looking for comfort. Not only were we disappointed, but we were met with ignorance and arrogance. The hope that we had for an extension of home was met with a terrible attempt at appropriation. And to top it off, we approached this owner open hearted as most of my culture does ready to share and educate, but he shot us down content with this misrepresentation. We discovered this new gem in Burlington called Bourbon Street. We sat outside and had the jambalaya and duck ragout. Both were tremendous and full of flavor. The food was up there with some of the best Cajun food we've had in New Orleans. The jambalaya was well seasoned with just the right amount of heat. The duck ragout was full of flavors and the sauce was on point. We also really appreciated having gluten-free options since one of us has a gluten intolerance. We wrapped up our experience at Bourbon Street by ordering the sweet potato maple cheesecake, which was absolutely amazing and so unique. Highly recommend trying! The owner/chef was kind, attentive and earnest. The service was great. We look forward to trying the other dishes (like gumbo and po boys) the next time we are in Burlington. We tried getting a table a while back and we're turned away which we understood as it was UVM's graduation week even though there was only one table seated. We tried again tonight around 7:30 on a Friday. There was one table seated. We got a pretty blunt we're not serving anyone else tonight and were essentially shooed out the door. I get that there's only one person working but why have a restaurant if you aren't going to serve people?! Just hire someone, the dining room is small enough for one waiter to cover. Best kept secret in Burlington. Authentic French Cajun Creole cuisine. After trying many of the more popular restaurants on Yelp and finding them overpriced and overrated, discovered this gem after the first review on here talking about the restaurant's Sweet Potato Maple Cheesecake, the only maple cheesecake in town. Chef Richard Lockwood worked at the original Bourbon Street Grill in Burlington years ago and has had this idea for a restaurant for over a decade. Tried the Cajun Frog Legs, the Duck Ragout, the etoufee, and the fried clam po' boy on special and was impressed by all of them. I feel compelled to write a review because we went to this restaurant based on the other reviews. We also really liked the idea of having the chef do everything from greeting you, refilling your water and serving you. However, this seem to constrain the entire experience - a single helper might have done really helped her as the whole experience seemed robotic. The biggest disappointment was the food. Nearly everything came from the freezer, they were big containers of dried ingredients like dried garlic and onion. The food didn't really smell of anything coming from the very close kitchen. The flank steak appetizer consisted of several anonymous strips of meat covered in a generic Cajun style spice mix that was no doubt from a container. Our jambalaya would have been passible in a cafeteria, but not in a restaurant. The shrimp were rubbery, the sauce very thin. Overall not a very good experience and not recommended. read more

chef Richard created a small rustic dining experience and is clearly very passionate about his food. The flank steak is tender and extremely flavorful, the catfish entree is awesome as well- slightly spicy with a sweet salsa, the red beans and rice are also standout.
