Azaleah is my go to gal. She's been cutting my hair for 13 years. The salon is warm and friendly. If you're looking for a good razor fade, go see read more

I've been getting my hair cut for 20 years, but the last three years with Azaleah have easily been the best. For 150+ weeks straight, I've trusted her with my hair, and she has never missed. Azaleah isn't just an incredibly talented barber who gives the sharpest fades I've ever had-she is an absolute pleasure to be around and has become a consistent, bright spot in my weekly routine. I constantly get compliments on her work, and as I prepare to move, saying goodbye to this shop is one of the hardest parts. It's going to take a long time to find anyone who can even come close to her skill and character. If you want a barber who genuinely cares about the craft and her clients, look no further. read more

I love a good little local barber and you can tell that this place has been here for a bit and is a staple for sleepy ol' downtown La Mesa. I called around to a few shops last Saturday to try and get a last minute appointment as my beard was starting to look a little shabby. It was about 9:30am and the kind soul who answered the phone said "I can get you in at 10" and I was quick to reply, "I'll be there." Sure enough I had my butt in the chair about 35 minutes later and my barber's trusty hands went to work on my rat's nest. A combo of scissors, clippers and a straight razor got my beard looking tidy and my head smooth. I was out the door in under 20 minutes and while quick work, the task at hand did not lack quality - it was a nice little cleanup. Seeing that I bounce around from barber to barber I can't say when I'll be back, but I sure like having this joint in the lineup. read more

This was my 4th or 5th time here. Thought I'd found a go to for haircuts. Today I had a 10:00 appt. with the owner. She was rude and clearly not happy I was there. Ahhh bye-bye read more

Perhaps the best fade I've received in San Diego! I love the option to book an appointment online and get in and out quickly. Their haircuts are reasonably priced plus you get a free, cold beverage with your haircut. My boys get their haircut too and both barbers do an amazing job. read more

This was my fifth visit to the shop. The quality of the haircut was fine but I like early appointments. Azaleah is very unpleasant in the morning and on this my fifth visit she did not show up for the appointment. I've moved on. read more

My wife was scheduled to get her haircut by Azaleah and when she walked in for her appointment she was greeted with a rude demeanor, pursing her lips and her head cocked and was told, "we don't do Bobs" and "do you plan on cutting your hair short or something?" Azaleah acted unprofessional and my wife was so taken back that she just walked out. I'm sorry if you were having a bad day, but that is no way to treat a customer. read more

I had made an appointment to get my beard lined up and trimmed by Azaleah and it was a great experience. First she lined up my beard and trimmed it nicely. Afterwards she placed a hot towel over my face for a few minutes and cleaned me up with a straight razor. It was amazing!! I highly recommend this establishment and Azaleah. I will definitely be back read more

Today was a hard day, my mom finished chemo and radiation and decided she wanted to shave her head since she knew her hair was going to fall out. I found this place down the street from my moms house that was a woman owned barbershop which I thought would make her feel more comfortable. Online it would only let me make appointments for tomorrow so I called and spoke to Terry and explained what was going on and she said I could come in at 4 today. She was very lovely and caring and wonderful and made sure we were both comfortable. She made sure my mom wanted it all off and then shaved her head very gently and rubbed cream on her head to help with the dryness of her scalp. When it was all over we all hugged and she said it was completely free! I didn't expect that at all! I grabbed all the cash from my tips in my purse and gave it to her because she was so great. I'm sure my mom and I will remember her for the rest of our lives. read more

Best haircut in San Diego. Big statement I know, but I stand by it. Azaleah is a gem and Terry is a saint. These gals are great company if you want to chat , or let you be if you're the quiet type. Booking online is easy and you can choose the option to pay in the store if plans change. Stop in...you won't regret it. Support small business. read more

After many bad hair cuts at a nearby kids salon, I decided to bring my 4 year old son to a barber. We saw Kristy and she was so great. My son has autism and she was able to distract him and keep his wiggly body sitting still. The haircut was exactly what we asked for. We'll definitely be back! read more

First time at his barber shop. My barber was Hannah and she was amazing! She asked what I wanted and executed it perfectly. She tapered my sides beautifully and made sure she understood how I wanted my haircut. She was friendly and welcoming and definitely understanding when I left my wallet at home :(. Thanks for giving me a chance to sort it out! The shop in general is small but great! The atmosphere is welcoming! Kristy greets everyone as they walk-in! Super friendly place I would recommend. BONUS! They a super cute fur-baby named Cody! She's super sweet and makes the haircut visit way better read more

Azaleah gave me the best haircut ever and my wife told me I could say that. She listened and heard what I said when I described the haircut I wanted and she doesn't rush. I almost forgot to mention that she offers a senior citizen discount and honors that discount even if you are fortunate enough to have a full head of hair. :) read more

Why say walk in welcome when you need an appointment makes no sense. If I can add 0 stars I would.

The people who said this is the best barber shop in San Diego were right. Amazing service, friendly, professional, people, affordable prices too. Kristy gives an amazing hot towel shave and I can get lost looking at the pictures on the wall, or watching half of La Mesa walk by the window. The whole process was relaxing, and not at all rushed. Suffice to say I'm a fan. read more

Awesome! I've been looking for someone who knew how to work with cowlick a for over a year. My son has two VERY strong cowlicks (one in front and one in back) and every place I've taken him to insists my only option is to buzz his hair. I have had his hair butchered on more than one occasion, even at a "barber." Luckily I found Hannah and she knew what she was doing. I made an appointment and had a tiny wait (which she apologized profusely for). The shop itself was nicely decorated and definitely felt like a "man's place". Hannah did a great job on my sons hair and helped walk me through the process of how to style his hair when we get home. I'm so happy with his cut. She was also quick. I didn't have my poor son stuck in a chair with a confused stylist who took forever. Nice to see someone who actually knows exactly what they are doing. This is definitely our new go-to barber! read more

My husband and I noticed this shop right after it opened and since he'd been looking for a new barber, he was anxious to give it a try. Every time we visited downtown La Mesa to eat at Swami's or grab a coffee or some beer, we eyeballed the shop, peeked in the window, and he reminded himself that he wanted to stop in for a cut. Finally, today, he had the day off work to deal with car maintenance and decided to stop by and get a haircut on his way home. Some excellent things: - Customers get a free beer, root beer, or cream soda - She has a beautiful doggie who naps in his cubby and acts as the shop mascot - Parking is pretty easy using the paid meters out front - Prices are more than fair for the level of service and skill Kristy was extremely friendly, very skilled, and easy to talk to. My husband very much enjoyed his time at the shop and he came out with a wonderful haircut. I also appreciate what she did because he's been stubborn the last few months and had been cutting his own hair. While he was doing a pretty good job of it, I am relieved to see him going back to a professional. She shampooed, cut, and styled his hair and, um, his hair smells like super amazing after. He stuck his hair in my face and said "Smell my hair!" After taking a deep inhalation of his head, I said "It smells like another woman has been running her hands through your hair!" He looked at me puzzled, but I say that in the best of ways because boys smell. Just kidding, guys. You smell pretty all right. ANYWAY, an excellent little spot and a great addition to the wonderful La Mesa Village. He'll be back and I'd like to go back with him to play with Kristy's dog and drink my husband's root beer while he gets groomed. read more

My husband got a pretty bad haircut at another salon so, once again, Yelp to the rescue. We came the first time without an appointment and Hannah was great to accommodate him into her schedule. We showed her pictures of ideas for his hair and she NAILED IT! She was friendly, quick, and precise. If you call a couple days in advance you can usually get an appointment when you would like to be seen. You can't beat a great haircut for $16. Bonus, my husband loves the novelty of having a beer while getting a trim. read more

Shoutout to Terry on fixing the disaster shave i got from Floyd 99 on Washington. Great little shop in downtown La Mesa with great prices for amazing haircuts/shaves. Not only was Terry very sweet, she was extremely patient and made sure i got a good look at the cut before she shaved it all off. She really took the time to look over and actively listen to what I wanted. Looks 100x better than what i had before. Will definitely be coming to her from now on. Highly recommend. Azaleah, the new owner, is absolutely without a doubt the best barber I've ever been to. Not only does she give the most incredible fade/hard part I've ever received, she's fun to talk to and always laughing, which makes for a comfortable and fun experience. The other barbers there also seem to do an excellent job. If you are looking for a barber and are in the La Mesa area, go see Azaleah!! You definitely won't be disappointed! read more

The best barber shop in all of San Diego not just la Mesa!!! It's located in downtown la Mesa right on the strip! I started off as a new guest and after one amazing great experience and cut I came back every two weeks. Kristy, Azalea and Hannah are the greatest barbers. They make you feel like aPart if the shop. They offer you a drink water or a beer (I always get a beer) and they have some great conversation to make you enjoy your time! I love how welcome I feel at this spot.  The skills of ladies are so good. I get my hair cut every two weeks by Azalea! She can do it all. She can do cuts and trims, line ups and does some great beard work! Illy recommend her for your next hair cut! read more

Kristy was so sweet and patient with my wiggle worm of a son and managed to give him such a great hair cut! Love the space!

I'm very happy to have found Boulevard Barber & Shave. After a couple haircuts at a children's salon where my son was terrified of getting his hair cut, I went looking for someplace else I could bring him. I saw another mom recommend this place and thought we'd try it out. I'm so glad we did. They were very welcoming and friendly and my son loved it. Azaleah was gentle and patient as she cut his hair and there was not a single tear. We will definitely be coming back for future haircuts. read more

What can I say? I love getting my hair cut at Boulevard Barber & Shave. My sons and I have been going there a little bit over a year now and we haven't had a single bad experience yet. First off, the place itself is very quaint and traditional "Barber Shop" with the old fashioned (yet refurbished) heavy-duty chrome barber chairs. As an architect, I fully appreciate the period feel that fits wonderfully with downtown La Mesa, which of course includes the traditional barber pole in the window. Second, I cannot say enough good things about the Owner (& barber extraordinaire) Kristy. Not only is she personable and knowledgeable, but a true sweetheart in the best sense of the word. And of course the haircuts are awesome. I recommend getting the full service, which includes a shampoo. I especially appreciate the way she engages my sons in conversation while they are in the shop. Finally, while you are there please ask and notice the vintage refrigerator (circa 1930's I believe) which is completely original (NOT refurbished). If you are lucky enough, she just may offer an old-fashioned soda pop from it's frosty interior! read more

I love this place since it's so close to home and they usually have an opening for me pretty last minute. It's hard for me to try and set an appointment a week in advance because my schedule is so crazy so having them around is a big stress reliever. Boulevard Barber & Shave - First beard trim!! Thanks Kristy! - Barbers Near Me - La Mesa, California

I found Boulevard Barber & Shave one morning when I suddenly realized my hair was too long and I needed to cut it down. The shop can be hard to find as you drive by so just park and walk toward the location and you won't miss it that way! When I walked in the door Kristy greeted me. I brought my 2 year old daughter and I like that Kristy acknowledged her. So many places simply ignore children so it was nice to see her do that. Taking a child with you to a barber is always an interesting situation and I love how she engaged my daughter and at one point she even started singing one of the Frozen songs which my daughter loves! I usually have to give my daughter my cell phone and put something for her to watch or else she starts looking for trouble. Kristy totally understood the situation and I appreciated that she did that. A lot of place will simply worry about the person in the chair and ignore those that come in with you. That was not the case here. To me it showed that not only does she care about the person in the chair, but also those close to the client. In other words, she does care!! The shop is very clean which to me is vital. When I try new barber shops if I see the place is dirty I walk out immediately. This was not the case here. I always like to get a short medium fade, but this time I wanted to leave some hair on top and get a fade on the sides. I told Kristy what I wanted and she did it. I love going to a barber who you can give minimal instructions and they simply do their magic. I walked out the barber shop loving my new hair! I have not had hair this long in over 20 years so now I know who to go see next time I need a cut. Next time I will be bringing in my 5 year boy! read more

I "walked in" on a Saturday to get a haircut (since the business's Yelp and Google both say they take walk-ins). Apparently, they don't actually accommodate walk-ins after all. I walked in, and although the barber was there (looks like Hannah from what I can tell from previous pictures posted on Yelp), she informed me that she was booked solid for the day, and couldn't squeeze me in. By the way, there was literally not a single person in the barber shop waiting for a haircut. Here's a thought (if the owner actually reads this): don't put on your website that you take walk-ins if you actually don't. It doesn't create a good customer experience. I'll also note that I have extremely short hair, so the cut might've taken a solid 15 minutes max (walked by 10 minutes later, and still not a soul to be found). Instead, you've managed to drive away what would've been a loyal, regular customer. Super disappointing on the customer service/experience front for a place that gets so many good reviews. read more
