Very polite, old school, professional barbershop. Super affordable for what you get. I've been to at least TEN different barbers around San Diego before finding Vans a few years ago. Wish I found this barbershop sooner!! I've never had a problem here at Vans. He always does an excellent job and will critique anything if you mention it. Absolutely no frills and just the way I like it. Walked in on a Monday, about 30-45 minutes before closing. There were 3 other patrons inside. Sat down and was attended to no more than 2 minutes later. Based on how fast this man was going, I thought Id end up walking out looking like a toddler had done my hair but nope, got exactly what I asked for in record time it seems. From my arrival until the time I paid, it was no more than 15 minutes. Efficiency at its finest. About 3-4 more people walked in before I left so you know this place must be a neighborhood gem. Came in for a haircut and my experience wasn't too great I'm not a very pick about my haircuts I always get high skin fades, when the guy was cutting my hair he would dig the clippers into the back of my head which did not feel pleasant it felt like he started rushing as people came in. When I got home to check my haircut it was not good. Sadly I won't be coming here again. read more

Very Basic cut. Done in 10 minutes. Was paying $15 and then the price jumped to $20. Definitely not worth $20!

Van just raised his prices yet again, this time right at the Holidays, from $15 to $20 for a regular cut. I've been coming here for years, but I'm sorry this is not a $20 haircut that I'm getting. Just a number 2, nothing elaborate. This is a barebones shop in a crappy little strip mall, and they are not doing anything different or extra than what they did when the price was $8. I've been going to this place for years. Never had any issues. Van the owner always seemed very nice and popular with his clients. He has 2 guys working for him/renting his booths. They're both older but one looks to be older with grey hair and glasses. They both have cut my hair a few times but the last 3 times the younger looking of the 2 guys scammed me. All I get is a buzz cut 2 all around. This dude tricked me the first time because I didn't notice it until I got home. He decided to shave my cheeks while lining up my side burns. I got home and saw how dumb I looked after coming back from the grocery store. At first I think oh it was an accident, he's old I'll leave it be. So I test It the second time I go, same guy, did the same thing. I left without saying anything confirming he does it on purpose. Third time was the charm. He shaved my dang cheeks again and then I said hey can you shave my face since you decided shave half of it without asking, he proceeded to tell me it's more money for a shave. I paid even though I shouldve called his act out but he had an obvious grin on his face that he got me that time. Main guy Van cool dude, other guy that scammed me into getting a shave, shove it where it don't shine sir. Jolly barber down the street does just as good. read more

Van keeps raising his prices. Okay, that's fine, but he needs to rent the far end station to someone else. If $15.00 is the cost then one would expect a barber who knows what they are doing and is conscientious of the fact he reeks like a cigarette! This guy has hacked my hair three times. I can clearly see why he is always waiting to cut hair while customers are waiting for the two other barbers to finish. He can't even get the sideburns even! Perhaps he needs a refresher course in barber school. When I go in there, he always announces he is ready to be of service and I don't want to hurt his pride so I sit in his chair hoping for a good hair cut. NO MORE! Raider was right in their review. When I walked in there was only one person. I knew to avoid the guy at the end, but he was the only barber present. I even sat in other chairs just hoping he wasn't the barber at the end I had been told to avoid.... No luck. I figured I'd give him a shot since I'm not picky, but boy was that a mistake. I asked for a fade on the side and to leave about an inch on top... he understood that to mean a buzz cut with hair on top. This is the first time in my adult life I've had a bad haircut. Our regular hairdresser/barber all in one family hair cutter retired and we needed a replacement. After reading a number of yelp reviews, I decided to take one of the kids to Vans and his hair turned out great. My son is a little picky about clippers and wiggles a little in the chair. Sometimes he doesn't make it to the end of a haircut, but not here. He sat still pretty much the whole time and at the end of it he raved about how much he liked the barber and the cut. His hair looked great and when my husband and older son saw it, they decided to try Vans, too. We are all really happy with how the haircuts turned out. The wait was not bad, but most importantly, the cuts were super fast and turned out great. FYI - both of my sons had the older gentleman. I'm sorry I didn't get his name. Van cut my husband's hair. I have been to Van's Barber shop off and on for years. It's usually just two barbers present, and although I'm fine with either of them, I guess I prefer the older gentleman, mainly because he seems to take his time. Either way, I'm usually finished within 15 minutes or so, and there usually isn't much of a wait to get in the chair. All in all, this is a perfect spot for me to go once a month. Thanks! read more

Not like those arrogant and really rude barbers that don't care about their customers. I get a normal low-fade and he only charges me $11. In Silicon Valley, a cheap/bad haircut is $14 and they still expect a tip, so this is an excellent deal!! read more

This is an $8 haircut place for men. Very close to my area in La Mesa. The workers were 2 Vietnamese guys which looks like father and son. Every time someone walks in the door, the son says to each of the customers, "Hi, how you doing?" in his Vietnamese accent. I thought it was funny. For the haircut, the father cut my hair. I felt that he did just fine. He cut my hair with scissors instead of clippers on top, so I admire barbers that are able to cut my hair with the scissors. read more

Vans is my go to barber every week, they do a great job every time doesn't matter who cuts my hair.

Straight up barbershop with a framed picture of a few different hairstyles for men. Nice flat screen to watch while waiting or getting cut. The multiple fish tanks in the back of the shop add a nice serene quality to the place. My hair was massacred at SUPERCUTS up the road and the old man at Van's fixed it up real nice. Good with the scissors and the clippers. Can't beat $8 a cut. This will be my new spot. Highly recommend. read more

Fast and Friendly Service. For guys, well most guys anyways, a haircut is something we don't spend too much money and time on. None of that spending 2 hours in the beauty salon every two weeks crap for us. Not to say that we guys don't appreciate all the beautiful women out there who do. Van is a great barber. While I was there, he got a call telling a customer to go ahead and come on in even though it meant he had to stay open past his original hours. Van was also very patient with me. He was always asking me if I wanted my cut like this or that. He showed that he values his customers. I guess that's why he's been there over 2 years. Convenient location. Located near Big Lots on Lake Murray, this place is about 5 minutes from my apartment. I usually pass by this area on my way to Grossmont College or Yogurt Express. Great Value. Both Van and his son do a wonderful job with my hair, following my instructions to a T... which makes me a happy customer! You have to be very, VERY specific otherwise they will completely mess up. I asked for a centimeter to be cut off the top and they went straight ahead and buzzed off 2 inches. How the hell can someone mess that up? Plus, they sit you very far away from a mirror and if you have bad vision like me you can't even see what's going on until it's done.
