I've been going to Van for three years. He's a blast to talk to and is a fantastic barber. He's pulled me out of a few jams when I tried 'other' barbers and "Super Cuts". My hair is wavy and a little difficult for some. Van knows how to work the magic with his clippers and always gives me a clean fade. He remembers "the usual", and that always makes you feel good. It's $8, and worth every penny. He's stayed open late for me a few times when I've needed a haircut before a last minute business trip, and he's a true professional. After the Navy barber shop butchered my hair one too many times, I started the search for a traditional barber shop for a reasonable price. Based on the favorable reviews here at Yelp, I tried Van's. Happy to report after 4 haircuts at Van's that I now have a new close to home permanent barber shop. Both guys have cut my hair and I'm very satisfied. I have confidence that these guys will cut it the way I want it for a reasonable price. Even my picky wife is happy with the results. Highly recommended. Great service, good haircut & for a very reasonable price! I don't normally pay someone else to cut my hair as I shave my head. When I cut my own hair, I need my wife home to check me or else I'll miss a patch in the back somewhere & end up looking like one of the Jackass guys after a bad prank. I wanted to cut my hair a week before Thanksgiving while my wife was at work. My kid started going here instead of the pricey salons we used to take him to & he loved it, so not wanting to spend a fortune just having my head shaved, I went here. Using just a pair of hair clippers like I'd use, he had me shaved up closer than I've ever gotten it in just a few minutes & on my way. 2 weeks later & feeling a little spoiled, I waited for my wife to go to work so I could go here & have it done for me again. 2nd time I had a different guy & he was great too. He got it pretty much as close, BUT he also trimmed my eyebrows & got the ear hair. I never even thought to ask, but he did & it was great. Starting to get tired of using tweezers every day to pluck some random eyebrow that mysteriously grew an inch since the week before, I was getting sick of it, so this was a nice touch. Starting to think this may be a regular spoiling treat myself thing to do every couple weeks or so now. read more

I used to come here once a week to see Van, unfortunately my last visit was not a pleasant one.. They close at 530 pm, I arrived at 4:30, my usually barber was not there but an older gentleman who has cut my hair in the past was occupied with another customer.. I decided to wait.. I was up next when another man who came out from the back with a mop asked if he could cut my hair, I smiled and politely said I'm waiting for him, pointing at the barber who acknowledged me.. at that time I was told to leave because they are closing soon. :) it was not even 5pm and they close at 530!! And even if it was 515, I am already sitting inside waiting!! You don't kick people out lol.. I didn't expect that, no manners.. It's Monday around 4:30pm and it's my day off, hair is shaggy and a mess... I tried booking a haircut appointment with my usual stylist(?) in downtown only to find out that she doesn't work there anymore. I can't fathom the possibility of another person other than her to do my hair. I turn to yelp for advice and called countless salons only to find out that most of them are closed on Mondays! why are they closed on Mondays? blah!!! Van's Barber was the only place that I can find that was still open so I decided to call them up, only to find out that they're about to close (5:30pm I believe) but Van said to go on ahead and come on in, he'll stay open for me. That's what I call customer service. Wow, what a great find. These guys know how to cut hair for men. I've had my hair cut by Van himself and the older gentleman that works with him, both times I've been here and my hair turned out the way I want it perfectly. They're good guys to talk to as well. They give better haircuts than the countless, pricey salons that I've tried here in San Diego. $7 is all it takes and they're quick and efficient. Attention to detail is paramount and you can tell because he'll ask you specific questions on how you like your hair before cutting away. They even have a water dispenser so you can drink if you're thirsty. You can't find that in any other barber/salon shop... wow. They have my business as long as I'm in San Diego, I'm a big fan. read more

This is a bitter sweet review as i have moved to los angeles and need to find another barber as i was going to vans for the last 2 years. I always went during the week in the middle of the day and there was usually one or two people waiting and i never had to wait long. All the barbers did an awesome job and i never had any issues with my cuts. The price is $8 which is an awesome deal when you consider the big chains like supercuts charge $20 and 75 percent of the stylist are horrible. I will definitely miss getting my hair cut at vans. read more

Great, great local gem of a barber shop. I've never seen a barber get my hair done so quickly while following my instructions perfectly. Usually when I come back home from the barber I have to do some touch-ups on my own to get the desired result I was looking for. This time around I did not have to do ANYTHING! I will never try any other barber around SD again as there is no point in doing as such. This barber is THE one! You'd be hard pressed to find another barber at this level of proficiency for eight dollars. It's like haircut heaven for men. There is a really cool fish tank in the back too. Tip your barber more than a couple bucks dudes. It'll go a long way. read more

I am a caregiver and I brought my 92 year old buddy here! It is definitely and get in-get out kind of place! AC works which is awesome since it's hot out! It's clean and orderly, definitely a to-the-point place! We only had one person in front of us, to wait on, and the wait was short. The prices have gone up since he has been going here.. This was my first visit to Van's, and I was more than a couple weeks over due for a trim. Yet he still seemed to know exactly what I wanted with very little instruction. No blow dryers or fancy gels. I was looking for a new barber shop with workers who care about the quality of their work. I am very happy to say that the workers here do exactly that. The workers actually communicate with their customers and are casual with their work, which personally makes it feel more comfortable. They also work very efficient, I didn't have to wait a long time. As for the actual haircut, they really exceeded my expectations. The experience was precise and you're given exactly what you ask for. I mention this because commercial hair salons (in this area) don't do well in this aspect of a haircut. I came in here ad asked for a pompadour. The barber did not know how to do one, but after I showed him a picture and gave him a verbal description, he had it figured out. I have been cutting my own hair for years after too many bad hair cuts, and I was actually really happy with the results I got here. He textures the top perfectly and managed to work with my stupid cowlick. In the past, people always made it too thick. My husband, an old guy with very thinning hair, was very much a walk by and walk in. He went for donuts next door and decided he could use a haircut. The younger stylist got right to him.
