Our baby Yorkie needed emergency care twice, the first time he was only 9 weeks old, and then again a month later. The place is clean, open and welcoming. But most importantly, the staff is very professional and compassionate. You can tell they care about their patients but also their human friends, keeping us updated and reassured. It was such a relief to know our little Yorkie was in good hands. Each time, they also followed up with a phone call the next day. Their location is convenient on South Boulder Road with ample free parking. I should also mention that they are not just an emergency vet, but do specialty care as well. We had to say goodbye to our sweet 12 year old golden retriever a few weeks ago. Absolutely everyone on staff that night was soooo incredibly caring and compassionate and patient as we said our last goodbyes. Losing a beautiful fur baby is a horrible, painstaking event. But we couldn't have been in better hands. And as if all the love the staff showed us that night, we just received in the mail a sympathy card. Everyone signed it. They were wonderful to us! We went to them for the first time this weekend. My dog showed signs of bloat vs foreign body at 1 am on a Sunday morning (great timing, of course). I called and they gave clear instructions on when to monitor and when to go in. Around 2 am, we showed up. Everyone was so polite, respectful, and caring. They explained each step of the way to us and didn't sound like we had to do anything that we were uncomfortable with. They observed our dog overnight and we were able to pick him up the next day. They also did something I've never seen-we got a refund from the initial deposit bc they didn't end up needing all of the funds for his care! Who does that?? We brought our girl Gracie here in the middle of the night due to an emergency. Upon arriving we were surprised that due to Covid we could not accompany her, even though we completely understand as to why. The team and BRVS were kind and loving as we were obvious very stressed out over her condition. When we were notified that we should put Gracie down due to her condition, they went above and beyond to accommodate us. They even called around to find us a vet who would come to our home and do it privately as a family. In the worst of times they were so incredibly kind to us and our girl. I have had a couple of dogs live to be 18/19 so I am a frequent flyer of urgent vet clinics. I have been to this one a few different times and they do a decent job. The staff is nice and friendly. They seem pricier (a lot of the not recommended reviews attest to this) with much longer wait times than other urgent clinics (even when they're not busy). But they're in a great location and super easy to get to. Yesterday I had a negative and strange experience. My daughter and I took our dog in at 6:30 yesterday morning. The doors were understandably locked because it was after hours. There was a sign that said, "Ring bell." So, we did. No one came after a few minutes so we rang it again. A few minutes later, we were still waiting so we rang it again. We could see through the window that someone was there, since there was a jacket and cup at the front desk. We thought maybe they were in the bathroom or that we hadn't pushed the bell all the way so we waited a bit more and then rang it again. After about 10 minutes, a woman came to the door and apologetically told us that they couldn't help us because there were no vets there. I asked if the vet was coming in at all that day and she said "unfortunately, no." I can understand things come up and I know everyone is short-staffed so I have empathy for that. But why not communicate that with your clients instead of having them wait outside? Putting up a sign on the door that said they weren't seeing patients would have really been helpful. Instead, it kind of feels like they were just ignoring us in hopes that we'd give up and leave. But when your dog is in pain, you tend to persist. My dog was not dying (I told the woman at the door that he was having an ear issue) and so, in and of itself, it's not that big of a deal. But what if this had happened to someone whose pet was having a life-threatening emergency when every minute matters? People go to emergency vets when their pets need urgent care. If extenuating circumstances prevent that care from happening, then fine - that's understandable, just put up a sign and let us know. Mid-morning yesterday, I saw the parking lot from the road when I was running errands in Lafayette and there were several cars in it, so I'm speculating that a vet did show up eventually. I'm honestly confused by that as well since I was told no vets would be in all day. High level emergency care for very sick pets! We found this clinic out of desperation when our dog got really sick in the middle of the night. Super professional, kind and helpful staff and vets. Their facility is new and sparkling clean. They assessed him and sent him home with a treatment plan and good instructions. When he took a turn for the worse we took him back and they admitted him. I took my sweet boy here as he was sick, very very sick so this is why we go to Emergency Vets. Initially, the ER Vet stated based on the radiograph she took, his stomach looked odd, not in the correct place possibly because he had stomach bloat surgery a year prior and advised me to take him to the orginal hospital in Boulder that did the survery and do a an upper GI exploratory. I rush him back to Boulder and the Vetwho never had any knowledge of the recommendation for a GI exploratory from BRVS yet there takes ANOTHER radiograph, this time he states oh your dog's intestines appear to be twisted this meaning he needs an emergency surgery.....quotes me at $10K. I said let me take him back to BRVS and get a quote there. They quote me for the surgery approx. $5k. Okay, back there to have surgery. After the surgery I find out the vet opened him up, did NOT find his intestines twisted, then decided to cut open his stomach (without checking with me since he was in surgery), finds some kind of growth. Cuts out the growth, gets it checked for cancer and we later find out it was nothing but possible scare tissue from food? Great, my dog has emergency surgery, they find nothing, tell me oh he is doing great, you can take him home.....2 days later he is SICK AGAIN. How can he be doing great, you NEVER found out why he was sick, but instead cut him open for NOTHING. He gets sick again 2 days later, I go back, they give him fluids, again, anti-nausea meds and app. stimulants....another bandage for more $$$. He continued to be sick with fever. I beg the doctor for antibiotics since he had elevated white blood count, a sign of infection plus e they never prescribed them even after his unnecessary expensive surgery. They said well okay we will prescribe them but ONLY because you are asking for them....really? After numerous calls and revisits, they tell me oh sorry we have no idea what is wrong with him you need to go see an internist friend in Longmont. Off I go to another ER with an Internist $$$$, she finds basically nothing but a mysterious infection. Stay on the Antibiotics, sorry but we can't help either. The Vets at Boulder Road would not return my follow up calls after this, they basically have SHAMEFULLY turned their backs to me. I am left to rely on my regular vets Pets and Pals who NEVER turned their backs to their clients, and NEVER charge redicuous greedy rates. In fact, they even would spend over a half and hour discussing his treatment at NO CHARGE. Why, because they care about the well being of your pets, not about the almighty $$$. I even called their PR person and asked if Dr. Peters ever looked at the Radiograph to confirm that he had a twisted intestine, she assured me she would get back to me after she did some research. To date, I have yet to hear back. So the PR person has Shamefully turned her back to me as well. I had been on the phone with Vet Techs who had to take another case and said, I'll call you back, they also NEVER called me back. At this point I have accumulated over $8,500 in treatment (80% from Boulder Road) while my dog remained sick. This ER VET hospital is quick to TAKE YOUR Money but NOT QUICK to follow through and support your case, even if they don't know or promise to get back to you, they DON'T. ONLY QUICK TO RESPOND WHEN WE SHARE OUR HONEST EXPERIENCES! read more

Not a good experience although I'd been here previously and it was ok (not great). Communication is not good. This time it was atrocious! My dog had surgery after being mauled and was discharged home with a bunch of meds for pain control and antibiotics. I was told he had been given medicine that morning but when he was crying incessantly I called and they had NOT given him anything before discharge so he suffered hours needlessly. then went back for a quick check of his drains tonight. Told it would be about an hour. 41/2 hours later I finally got him back. No communication during that entire process. And they didn't give him his meds again although I called after 2 hrs and told them he was due. I won't be going back. read more

My cat Annie had to go in to Boulder Road to get tests done (ekg, echocardiograph). When I got there I was very happy with the handling of my pet. Since it's covid times, they came and got Annie from my car. Since I don't believe in cages/carriers, the technicians brought Annie into the vet in their arms which I was very grateful for; I had other experiences where she was put in a box. I know this made Annie a lot more comfortable being held than carried. After my appointment the doctor was very thorough with me and let me ask questions without feeling like I was being rushed off the phone. I took my cat in to see Dr. Tzipory recently, and his services were outstanding. He performed the required tests, walked me through what he recommended and why, and made plenty of time available for a debrief of results. The facilities also appear to be top-notch--spacious, clean, and comfortable. No criticisms--BRVS exceeded my already high expectations. 10/10 read more

We took our 2 year old Border Collie mix into BRVS late last evening after he was bitten by another dog while walking on a trail earlier in the evening. From my initial call to BRVS through the entire visit and treatment we were very pleased with the care and attention we received. The entire process only took a couple hours, and now our dog is resting comfortably in his cone-of-shame and is on the mend. We have brought our cat for eye treatment to BRVS for years and we were very very impressed wtih their care and attention. Now they are part of Blue Pearl and everything has changed. The vets are so rushed they don't even have time to say "hello". The facility is not as clean and they are in such a hurry to service the next patient that they give medicine in the waiting room. The prices have gone way up and everything else has gone way down. We will find another specialist. Too bad. read more

I'm very grateful for the friendly nurses and assistants that helped us save our cat, but take your pet to a different business. BRVS refused to begin treatment for my cat who had been poisoned until we put down a deposit of almost $1000. My credit card expired at midnight that night so me and my boyfriend are scrambling to get the money together before the effects become irreversible. I asked other vets if this is protocol and they assured me that no, it is not. worst case scenario you get sent to collections, i've never experienced a vet put treatment on hold until they get paid, especially in a time sensitive case. They also gave us no information whatsoever on what to do when we took the cat home, and there was no follow up call or anything. Save yourself the stress and just take your pets elsewhere. read more

I don't usually leave reviews but this place deserves it. They took great care of my pup, were very timely, and listened to me, all things that are not common at most emergency pet hospitals. My doggo ate some crazy stuff, and these guys/gals were awesome in making me feel like he was cared for. This place was recommended by my usual Vet, the Mountain Ridge Animal Hospital, and I won't be going anywhere else for emergencies(hopefully there are no more) after my experience today. We brought our young cat in on a weekend to get an ultrasound. She had gone through a number of tests with our primary vet all week and we needed an ultrasound to figure out why she could not keep food down for days. She was there all afternoon waiting for the radiologist to come to do the procedure. We then get a call that they are unable to do the ultra-sound and that we need to reschedule for Sunday morning. We declined and brought her home. The doctor called us to inform us that we needed to sign paperwork for our cat's release and that was the only time we talked to the doctor. I felt like they were not very forth coming or professional (maybe understaffed that day?). We wound up taking our cat the next morning to Aspen Meadow Vet in Longmont and they have been FANTASTIC in taking care of our cat and communicating with us. read more

I would caution anyone to not use this facility under any circumstances. Veterinarians here, went against the guidance of CSU vet hospital and convinced me to allow them to perform a lower back surgery on my 15 year old labrador retirever. I was assured that the surgery had a high probability of eliminating the dysfunction. It did not. Drs here seemed driven more by their massive egos or possibly even worse- putting their profits ahead of the well being of the patients, then accurate insight into what a likely and realistic outcome would be from a proposed surgical procedure. Additionally, upon voicing of my complaints, i was treated with very unprofessional attitudes, that included personal email attacks from the owner of the facility himself ! I understand that this is a busy ER and that care will be delayed due to incoming emergencies, however the lack of communication while we were waiting for our animal to be seen was distressing. And the email with the procedure estimate wouldn't come through and they refused to bring us out a paper copy due to COVID. On the topic of COVID-19, the restrictions that are in place are a danger to our pets. Even in human hospitals a patient is allowed one visitor. These animals need us to be their advocates and there is no reason I shouldn't be allowed to sit in an exam room with a mask, with my pet. Our dog was brought to this facility for a procedure on a Sunday evening. We were told to come back on Wednesday to have the incision looked at, and we made an appointment for this. Upon arriving on Wednesday, a technician came to my car and took my dog inside after asking how he was doing overall, but never verified what he was taking my pet inside for. Since it was such a basic appointment, I did not feel the need to clarify this myself. Upon returning my pet to me, I was informed that they removed his stiches (which had only been in for 48 hours and were not scheduled to come out for two weeks). These medical professionals failed to check any patient identifiers. The receptionist ill-informed the technician, who failed to verify with me what he was doing to my pet, and the doctor even said to remove the stiches without verifying with the chart or me as the owner. We were very unimpressed with the communication breakdown and lack of professional behavior. Upon us calling back in tears, the technician did own his mistake but was rude, condescending, and put blame on other staff members. The rest of the staff did make a valid effort to rectify the situation, replaced the stiches, and overall were very understanding. But I will never put my trust in this facility again, especially while I am not allowed to be my pet's voice and be by their side. Thankfully the mistake was not life threatening to my pet, but it easily could have been due to his age and preexisting heart condition. read more

This review is regarding the fees charged by this facility (which appears to be pervasive in the "emergency" clinic industry). We have a cat who had a blocked urethra and needed a catheter to drain his bladder. A very common problem for male tabby cats, and also a very simple procedure. Unfortunately this happened over the weekend and our normal vet was closed. / When I later checked with our Vet, we found out that this clinic charged roughly TWO AND A HALF X the amount our Vet would have charged. I mentioned this to the owner and he became extremely defensive and agitated. I told him I understood them needing to charge more that our regular Vet, but two and a half times more?? He continued to be argumentative and asked what I suggested. I said just something that was reasonable and did not take advantage of people. No response from him. Then he tried to defend his charge by saying they have "highly trained specialists". No argument that the staff is competent. So is our Vet. This was not neurosurgery. It was as basic as it gets and likely something that an Vet assistant is trained to do. We wanted to take him to our regular Vet on Monday (he was brought in Sunday), but were told he absolutely needed to stay a minimum of 48 hours. When the owner stated, "nobody was holding a gun to your head", they metaphorically were. You have an emergency and are relying on their directive, as with no experience in this situation, you are trusting every word they say to keep your pet from dying. The reality is, we could have taken him out and to our Vet the next day. That is not the main issue here though. We were o.k. not upsetting the cart and leaving him (even though they pushed hard to keep him another day and possibly a 4th day). The issue is finding out that they know they have you in a vulnerable situation and have no qualms with charging their very inflated rate. A bit like pharmaceutical companies overcharging for drugs they know a patient must have. Nothing illegal, but I certainly question how ethical? / We would have had no objection if they had charged 1.5x or so of our normal Vet rate, but it obviously does not sit well with the actual rate charged is 2.5x that ( 2 days-almost $2500). / We have no complaint with the care given, but would suggest you think about options, and if possible take your pet in to your regular Vet before a situation becomes urgent on a weekend. read more

Horrible! We felt like a PAYCHECK! If I could Give ZERO STARS, I WOULD! We brought our 5 Month old kitten here who ate a string and they suggested we do surgery without an ultrasound. I told them we were not going to put our Baby through surgery until we knew for sure she wouldn't just pass the string. Then, they charged us $770 for the Ultrasound. OMG! After the ultrasound, they said surgery was required right away, which was true, but said the damage looked so bad that the low side cost would be about $5,000 and could go to nearly $7,000. However, If any complications came up during surgery, we should prepare for up to $10,000!!!! To add insult to injury, they wanted to know if we would do CPR or a DNR if something went tragically wrong. We were devastated and feared they would charge astronomical fees for CPR, "We didn't even ask" because what a horrible question to ask! So while my wife was balling her head off, we told them DNR! Thank Goodness we had the wherewithal, in our moment of need, to call Northside Emergency Vet Clinic for a second opinion. Dr. Murano told us the Enterotomy would cost between $2,800-$4,000. Not cheap, and bless you if you can do it, but an absolute relief to us at the time . They also understood the risk of the surgery and asked us about DNR vs. CPR but CARED enough to provide consulting on the decision. They actually care about their patients and their patient's families. They said, " if your cat was Old with lots of health problems it may be difficult to bring her back but your perfectly healthy 5 month kitty ate a string, if something happens during surgery, we have her intubated already". It felt so good to say CPR! Even still, it was super painful to pull our baby out of Boulder Road and drive her across town, but we did it! Dr. Moody, at Northside was compassionate and took wonderful care for her. It ended up not being a complicated surgery, and she is doing great. if you go to Boulder Road, "GET A SECOND OPINION"!!! form anywhere! - Boulder Road, if you are reading this, Please know more people probably Euthanize their cats after bringing their animals to you than need to, and if they stay with you, they have outrageous bills that they don't need to. read more

I decided to wait a couple of months before leaving this review to ensure that I was giving a review that wasn't left out of grief. My furbaby came down sick out of nowhere. He was in a lot of pain and I was told his immune system was attacking itself. I was out of town but my son took him to the vet who said he needed a specialist right away. He was taken to Boulder Road Veterinary Specialist. I was out of town and scared to death for my baby. I got a call from the office and they wanted to do some testing to try and figure out why this was happening so they could give the right treatment. They used words like "gold standard care". So as scared as I was, I applied for care credit and did everything I could to get my baby "gold standard care". He deserves it, right? However, I could not get the $6K gold standard amount. I managed to get $4K. So they did the test they thought the most important. Before the test there was talk of sending him home because he seemed better, after the test he took a huge turn for the worse. That morning they called me and said they didn't think they could do anything for him. I was upset and asked about the test results and because it was a weekend they said they didn't have the results and the vet indicated since I didn't get the other test that was included in the gold standard care that they could no longer do that test. Made me feel like it was my fault that he took a turn for the worse because I didn't get the other test. I asked that they get a rush on the test results which I'm surprised I had to suggest it. I jumped on the first plane and was there to spend time with him before he passed. We got the test results which confirmed what they already knew, that his immune system was no longer working right. Now that I can look back, why did I spend money so much money on a TEST that only confirms what they already knew? It would be different if it was a procedure to save his life but it was only a TEST. And this test was so painful and intrusive (bone marrow collection) that it caused him an extreme amount of pain to the point that he could not move without yelping. Why did they push these tests? Why not treat for everything it could be? If you're reading this, I just hope you can get something out of my experience and not let grief cloud your judgement. In hindsight, I would not have allowed them to do this intrusive test nor make me feel like his life was dependent on whether or not I could come up with $6k. Now I'm $4k in the hole, lost my baby, and struggling to crawl out of this depression from losing him. The only reason I gave 2 stars other than one is that I feel the office staff and tech assistants are genuinely caring people. It may not be fair to lump the vets all in one but I was in such shock, I didn't get the vet's name in charge of my baby. read more
