I genuinely wanted to write a glowing review for BEL and the work they did for our wedding at The Olio this past April. Unfortunately, I can't ignore how disappointed I was with their overall execution and communication. Lighting was one of the few elements of our wedding my husband truly cared about--and entrusted to BEL. We contracted them to provide three key lighting features: a large custom GOBO sign, pin lights for 12 tables to highlight our floral centerpieces, and a disco ball to enhance the ambiance. To be fair, the disco ball was executed beautifully. It created the exact mood we were hoping for and truly added to the atmosphere of the evening. That, however, is where the praise ends. The pin lighting was a major letdown. Despite several conversations with Jason, Fritz, and the BEL team about our expectations--particularly that the pin lights should spotlight our centerpieces for optimal visual impact in person, in photos, and in video--the results fell drastically short. The lighting was virtually invisible throughout the event. It failed to appear in our professional photos and videos, and not a single guest I spoke to recalled even noticing it. I specifically chose this lighting to elevate the look of the tables I had spent a great deal of time and money curating. That effort was completely lost. I reached out post-wedding to get clarity, and instead of accountability, I was met with blame. Their response was that I didn't book a lighting tech with my package. But isn't that the reason we hire professionals--to ensure our vision is executed properly? At no point during the planning process did they offer meaningful guidance or advise me on the limitations or considerations of pin lighting. Instead, it felt like I was being upsold, rather than truly supported. A simple conversation about whether pin lighting would achieve the look I wanted could have saved me nearly $1,000 and a lot of disappointment. As for the custom GOBO, it was initially projected in a way that was visually unappealing--cropped and too small. Thankfully, we caught this during a private venue walkthrough and were able to correct it ourselves before guests arrived. That should not have been our responsibility. To any future couples considering BEL: be extremely specific. Ask every question imaginable. Do not assume that you're hiring a team who will take ownership of helping bring your vision to life. In our case, what we received felt incomplete and careless--all because we declined to hire a lighting technician for the day. We expected a professional service. We contracted Boston Event Lighting for our association's annual meeting and workshops, exactly because of the great ratings and reviews. I am the CEO of a non-profit organization with an international membership, and we discussed our meeting needs (part in-person and part virtual) with this company in advance. They promised a flawless execution and, based on the reviews we were confident that they would deliver. As you guess from my rating, they certainly did not deliver. They messed up presenters' presentations where slides were not displayed well, embedded movies were not played, symbols and letters were skewed (although they claim to have tested them in advance). Their equipment look old and didn't work for half of the time - they didn't even have functioning microphones. Even working on AV for our board meeting (simple zoom connection) turned out to be a half-day program, using their equipment which failed along the way. And the attitude of "I know better" was really exhausting. They wouldn't listen to our needs and tried to tell us how we should be running our meeting. We spent 5 days where everyone involved in the planning of the meeting had to micromanage the AV staff and struggle to get anything done. A very stressful experience. This was my wedding and they lit up the whole room with really beautiful wash lighting and pinspots on the centerpieces. Also, Great band lighting with some moving lights. They also did some really cool effects with these pixel bars using mapping technology. Fritz is an awesome designer. They set up early and learned the music of the band so the cues were really tight! I shopped for a while to find a company that had a real light designer not just a company that has lights. I am recommending them to other friends getting married. read more

We needed to rent uplighting for our wedding last month, and we couldn't be happier with the service and quality of the uplights!! Fritz was very communicative and always made me feel heard, and the pricing was quite fair! He was also super flexible with both the pick-up and drop-off times and locations! Upon pickup, we were given an instructional walkthrough and cases of fully charged uplights! Their model was much newer than what I had found from online rental companies, and using it was super simple - we just turned each light on and selected a color on the included remote control. Recently, we worked with Boston Event Lighting for a medical school Winter Formal event held at a very upscale venue. We're so glad to have hired them as third party vendors instead of going with the venue's lighting designers. When we hired Boston Event Lighting and Film, we expected professionalism and expertise- we got that, and so much more! Their design for our space exceeded our expectations, and they made our simple school gym look like a professional event space. Their equipment was state of the art, and they had a solution for everything- lighting posters, highlighting displays, and switching between our auction program and a full on dance party with ease. They were able to improvise, troubleshoot, and roll with the punches all the way through our event. Fritz, Paul, and James put the time in to really understand what we wanted out of our event so they could anticipate our needs and plan for any possible hurdle. Their videography captured the spirit of event so we can enjoy it for years to come. Uplighting was one of those things in my wedding budget that was more of a "maybe" than a "definitely" and I was really anxious that maybe I was spending money unnecessarily when I hired Boston Events Lighting to illuminate my wedding tent and venue. However, I can now say it worth every single penny - evidenced by the fact that my father, who thought it was a silly expense, pulled me aside at the wedding to tell me the amber lights made everything look magical. Working with Boston Events Lighting was a pleasure from the get go - Paul really took the time to explain about the different types of lights and how they work and he really went above and beyond to work within my budget. He was so friendly and made me feel like I was the only bride he was dealing with (certainly not true but very appreciated). The day of the wedding he arrived in plenty of time to set up the lights (which I really appreciated since our timeline was tight!) and we got to chat for bit - he is really friendly and made sure we liked how the lights were set up and was more than willing to move a few around until we thought they were perfect. Our NYE wedding was beautiful thanks to the handy work of Paul and his creative team from Boston Event Lighting. We had our ceremony and reception uplit and it truly transformed our somewhat boring hotel space into a romantic, pretty, and fun atmosphere. The lights changed throughout the evening reflecting the mood of the music and the crowd. NYE is a special evening and Paul created a spectacular party environment. We had met with another well known lighting company and was put off by their disorganization and lack of cohesiveness (ie: quoting us one price, then quoting us a higher one; sending us a contract with the wrong name on it after we explicitly said we were not interested in working with them, etc). Our initial meeting with Paul was a breath of fresh air after that disaster. He was extremely professional and responsive throughout the entire planning process. Cost was more than reasonable, and the end product was truly breathtaking. I cannot recommend them enough! read more

Paul B. and his crew were the vendors for a few of the most important aspects of a reception and they went ABOVE AND BEYOND to make sure I was happy and satisfied on the days leading into and on the day of our wedding! First he provided the uplighting, draping and globe lights to decorate the beautiful rooftop of the Taj Boston Hotel. Using soft purple uplights, they gave the room a beautiful glow that really achieved the intimate feel we were going for. The draping/globe lights over the dance floor were exactly what I imagined and the icing on the "decor" cake was that they made sure to get a handmade chandelier (made out of crystals from my Grandma's chandelier which was her Mom's originally). When I walked in the room my eyes were drawn to the chandelier and it filled my heart with such joy to see it up there. They were a bit unsure in the days before if they could hang it or not but ultimately I think it was realized how much it meant to me and they made it happen! Beyond this Paul was our DJ and we had an added drummer and sax player to emphasize the music. I don't think Paul and Boston Event Lighting advertise this service enough because I found out about it randomly at the last minute when I happened to be late night searching through their website and stumbled upon a video and emailed Paul asking what it was all about. Our guests were BLOWN AWAY! The music was perfection and the added affect of the drums and sax was basically phenomenal! Family and friends are still raving about how great the music was. All my family (even all the men) were dancing with their wives all night long. Honestly it's such a hard decision to choose between spending a fortune (in Boston) for a live band or saving a little bit of money and getting a DJ .. Paul can offer you the best of both worlds for a fabulous price that will give you room in your budget for a few more of the little things you really want.
