Take this one for example, it is your traditional cafe. Serving tea,coffee and not really any fancy coffees. It sticks to good old English food like a fry up and sandwiches. It is a bit outdated but to me I think it keeps with the old country theme kind of like Last of the Summer Wine. I suppose a cafe like this must feel the competition, but it is different than the other fancy ones that are popping up everywhere. I think it is hard to see even though it is on a main road, it doesn't exactly stand out or anything, but still good!

At some point back in time, folks really went all out with their architecture - a far cry from the select few cement blocks that litter our skyline. Leeds is a gorgeous city, and I'm not afraid to say it. And this is truly a gem. Often, with buildings of historic stature, the cafes and eateries attached sadly offer a lack luster cup of grey tea. (Not earl grey, just grey.) The might attempt at a few cellophane wrapped dry cakes, and of course charge double what you'd expect, but here my friends... Here, they make an effort. An effort worthy of the attractive structure. The afternoon tea was on the agenda, when I met a friend here the other week, and my those scones were generous. Huge thick cakes, obviously freshly baked, and they came with a delectably cute pot of jam and a pot of clotted cream. Butter, even. The tea was equally impressive. I ordered a Russian Caravan; a smokey dark tea, full of intrigue, and whilst it might not have suited the cake in question, it was delightful. The tea came in a loose leaf tea pot, perfect, and so this place is now on my list of loose leaf spots - something I hope catches on about Leeds. We need a dedicated tea room! The chap serving was lovely, friendly, and for two pots and two scones we treated ourselves like queens for the pauperly sum of a tenner. If you fancy an afternoon indulgence, truly, this is the perfect spot. Even better? You can wander around the gallery before or after, for absolutely nothing.

Being from America and all my co-working and I had no clue where we were or where we were going. We met up with some locals and they told us they knew of an open place for us to continue our celebrations. So off we went following these new friends, or complete strangers depending on how you look at it down the snigglegates of York to a destination unknown. Time flickered and consciousness faded, but determined we were to not end the night quite yet. After a little bit of a walk we ended up the Blue Fly. Upon walking in and seeing the red lights and being handed a cold pint I knew we had come to the right place. We stayed here for an hour or so, until they closed and kindly escorted us out into the street. Service here from the bartender was great. They took really good care of us and made sure we had a great time.

During the day, the Blue Fly is a cafe serving hot and cold drinks and a range of continental foods all made inside, from sandwiches and salads to cake and scones. They also do giant milkshakes, which are great! I actually prefer the hot drinks + coffees here, because they usually come with some sort of biscuit and they use real melted chocolate in their hot chocolate, unlike some places I could mention! The staff are friendly, and when I was sat outside at a table another group left, and they came to clean up almost straight away. This happened again when another couple left too! The toilets are clean, and I think they also have a specific Internet lounge. At night the Blue Fly turns into a bar, serving professional cocktails in a great atmosphere. There is also a fair sized catering venue, which looks perfect for hosting a birthday party or something!

They offer various soups of the day, sandwiches with a variety of hot or cold fillings, and a good range of home baked treats such as scones and flapjacks, and don't forget the 'famous' apple pie which we think is delicious. At lunchtimes it is thriving, with large numbers of local customers, yet the stranger is always welcome too. Although this is a drive through, there is also plenty of seating in the cosy interior and you can also sit outside on the terrace.

It's cramped and it's grubby (I'm not talking worn and loved) and a cafe doesn't have to be like that even if it is back to basics. In my opinion the appeal of traditional cafes is that they serve food just like mum used to but in fairness to my mum she hasn't yet managed to serve an egg which is barely cooked on top and burnt on the bottom and her tea is served hot. On a seperate and possibly random note, I'm not a big person so i feel very sorry for anyone who is trying to get into the men's toilet.

Happily, La Strega features neither grimy décor nor psychotic locals, despite it's back alley location, and is instead a bright, cheap and cheerful place to grab a quick bite to eat. The menu is what you'd expect and certainly nothing exotic, with eggs being pretty much the only veggie option and everything coming with chips and beans, but it's well cooked and surprisingly good quality considering the price. Next time you're hungry in town and don't fancy paying £6 for a couple of slices of bread and some rocket, come here instead where you can fill your gut to bursting, have a cup of tea and still leave with change from a fiver.

Since moving to Leeds I've been trying to find a good coffee shop to replace my favourite back in…read moreYork. Next stop was Mrs Atha's. Trying to locate Mrs Atha's was not the easiest. The proverbial vulture circling in the sky looking for its prey I eventually located and headed towards. You'd be forgiven for following suite, the outside is painted black to match the shops that surround it. This is a slight downfall from it's location and one I presume they have no control over due the nature of the area. Time to take the plunge, my caffeine levels where dropping rapidly. Upon entering you are greeted with the feeling of entering a cave, dark and sparsely lit. On your right is the coffee station, to your left are the stairs downstairs and in front a selection of eclectic seating. A warm greeting was given and after a short perusal I plumbed for my statuary cappuccino. Now normally it takes about 15 seconds for me to place an order but this never happened. My eyes kept wandering, looking at the delights and my mouth kept watering. I have a weak spot for chocolate and cakes and my knees started to tremble. Laid before was a bevvy of delights for me to try. I had to have a nibble and so I did. Just a quick nibble, a little delight, a chocolate truffle shaped piece of heaven. So I ordered my cappuccino and truffles and was asked to take a seat while my coffee was readied. Unfortunately upstairs was full to the brim so I plumbed for a seat downstairs. That was a shame, upstairs is quaint, quirky and generally original. What a difference to upstairs. Crammed between the entrance to the toilets and a small kitchen area are a few seats/tables, the highlight being an old school desk. Not the atmosphere I thought it would be. While talking to the friendly staff member while she cooked was nice it's not the type of area I really want to sit and enjoy a coffee. I think if I come back I'll make sure I get a seat upstairs. My coffee arrived after about 5 minutes along with my truffles and I sat back to do some work and enjoy my caffeine fix. I know there are people that like a drink as hot at the inside of a volcano and I know there are those that like to tip it down their throats but me, I like to sip on it over a period of 30 minutes to enjoy the full potential of the ground beans. This could not happen with this coffee. By the time 5 minutes had reached my coffee was on the verge of the next Ice Age. Not good. Don't get me wrong, it's a damn fine coffee, not as good as La Bottega/Laynes but damn good non the less. So in a nut shell, the coffee was good (if a little too cold), the downstairs is not good, the truffles AMAZING and the service good indeed. I will return if only to try more chocolaty delights.
