I came in to get some lip balm due to suffering from chapped lips, I was able to find what I was looking for, and the staff seemed friendly with fast service at the checkouts, and help to find the product I was looking for. (Impressive as the checkout area was only small, given the size of the store and the fact there are no self-service checkouts) As a small store, the selection is limited but is decently stocked given their size. Due to the size of the store, the facilities are limited compared to what one would expect from Boots, and offers the bare minimum, while also shutting earlier than other nearby locations, at 6 pm. 3* - OK, good location but much better pharmacies nearby from Boots and rival brands.

They cover all the basic pharmacy items and, although not overwhelmingly friendly, we're courteous enough. Because of the Royal Mile location and because I would think they are an independent pharmacy, their prices were quite a bit higher than the Boots around the corner. Their package of 16 paracetamol was £0.55 here, whereas Boots' were only £0.16. That said, it is convenient and handy if you need to stop in here, and it didn't seem unsafe at all to me despite what the other reviewer said.

On a recent visit when I nipped in for a pack of chewing gum, the various foul smelling, painfully thin and toothless characters waiting at the counter told me what that dark secret was. Despite the pleasant exterior, the lather large amount of skagheads that visit this pharmacy for their weekly methodone hit makes it a virtual no-go area at certain times of the day. I've worked on The Royal Mile for about six or seven weeks now, and have already seen two rather sizeable, drink and drug fuelled brawls outside. It really is quite astounding that the powers that be send the junkies here, to the city's main tourist thoroughfare, for their pick-me-up. Given that heroin addicts aren't known for their early morning "rise and shine" attitudes, as long as you get here before 1pm you'll be alright, and will find a quite lovely little outlet for all your pharmaceutical needs.

Always good offers to be had and those Boots loyalty points soon rack up if you regularly buy your essentials here. The staff can be slightly hit and miss if like me you need help picking a hair dye due to the sudden spurt of grey hairs! Then again you can't expect staff to be knowledgeable about all products as there are just too many. It's worth noting that you can get your prescriptions sent directly from your GP to the pharmacy and there is even a doctors surgery downstairs for those living in the city centre.

I haven't been there in over a year, but there have been a few times when I have gone here to collect a prescription and they haven't been opening, so I think the opening hours must just be half days/odd opening times. Overall the pharmacist and the sales assistants have always been friendly. The waiting time is very short as there's hardly ever many people in. They offer a range of cosmetics and toiletries and also stock a small selection of sweets as well as shampoo and other buy over the counter products. The prices are about standard compared to other chemists and obviously the prices of prescriptions is going to be the same wherever you go the personal touch you seem to get with these makes this my number one choice chemist in South Shields.

The staff are still the same and as friendly as ever. They are very helpful and happen to listen and advise. If it is something a bit more medical they will get the pharmacist who is always happy to help and I even had butterfly stitches put on my knee here after falling over when i was younger so I didn't have to go to hospital. You can expect to pay the same price for the brands but i like their own brand stuff as it does the same job and is much cheaper. I get their own paracetamol suspension for my daughter when she's teething and you get double the amount than the branded one for a pound cheaper.

Boots seems to have slowly creeped up from nowhere to switch from a functional store to a place…read morewhich is shown the love by all and sundry, but when even the staff are a cut above at this branch, I'd say they deserve it. During busy times, the manager sometimes comes on the tills at the Waverley Station Boots, and his Barras / Albert Square Market style banter is a joy to behold. With wit and enthusiasm, it sticks in the mind far more than the grumpy service we're used to elsewhere.
