Round the corner and to the back is the pool table room where I've enjoyed beating my good friend on many occasions. They have seating to the front and in a small garden to the back, plus a small car park. It's a nice tidy pub, with friendly staff and fairly good beer. Don't remember it ever going quiet when I, a stranger, walked in.

The area outside, at the immediate rear, has been decked and covered over and the car park has been improved immensly. There is a childrens play area and it is very evident that this is a family friendly pub. The food is from a well balanced, unpretentious and reasonably priced menu and is always spot on. It's hard to resist a delicious beef baguette with gravy and real chunky home made chips! As well as providing a great place to drink and eat, The Flying Ferret is making a difference in Shelley as a place to meet and is doing great fund raising for various local charities. Thank you to all involved for making the time and effort to make that difference!

Sightseeing is thirsty work. Walking, snapping pictures, shopping for souvenirs. And so when it was…read moretime for a drink, there's the Punch Bowl. A couple of seats out front for the smokers, but I went in to this 17th century pub for a 'swift half'. A full offering of spirits and what looked like a good selection of wines, I went with one of the real ales on tap. Professionally pulled, it was nice and cool. Perfect for drenching my thirst. Big seating area, I think this would be a fine place for a big bunch of friends to hang out. Dart board, television. And a big menu of traditional pub foods.

They serve Beer wines ans spirits like most pubs, but the special thing about the Punch Bowl is the food they serve. It's FANTASTIC I always knew that they served food, but as most of times i've been there it's been quite late in the evening so I never sampled the menu and it was until recently my partner and I decided to go in for a late dinner. The speciality dish at the Punch Bowl is Pie, but these are no ordinary pies! they're a a huge selection to choose from, from your bog standard steak and kidney to delightful game and fruit pies, or cheese and fruit pies to suit the vegatarian. They have a special board which offer different feelings - always worth a look! They also serve steak, one of my favourite things - so that's what I ordered, rare of course and I wasn't disappointed it was beautifully cooked and tasted Devinne! Now onto the puddings! unless you have a very sweet tooth you will not manage a whole slice as they are enormous so I recommend you share! all in all a great place to drink and eat!

I'm not too sure why no one ever felt that they were more enamoured of this place, but I suppose on…read morea surface level, a pub is a pub is a pub. However, I'm going to assume that previous reviewers haven't experienced the music pub quiz, which goes some way toward my affection for this cosy and welcoming local to the folks of Chapel A. To begin, yep. It's a pub. It has nooks, cosy little rooms, and if you're new to it, that slightly labyrinthine vibe. To be honest, if memory serves, it's none too large -but somehow still felt a bit like a maze. It's a proper old local, with hand pulled cask ales, half lagers and packets of crisps. (Or Nobbys nuts, if you prefer.) There's a darts board, there's a flat screen TV, there's some excellent established bar staff to take your order. Of particular note includes the fine facial hair of one said bar man. Topped off with a tie dye t-shirt and Australian style leather hat, and you know this is one serious dude. In fact, I'm sure he was an understudy for the Big Lebowski. Or, at least, I'm going to spread that befitting rumour. So, said dude runs the music quiz. This quiz is easily one of the toughest, but most enjoyable, around. Designed for true music fans, there are forty questions, and they come in a unique style to most quizzes I've partaken in. First 5 questions you've to guess the artist, next five the song name, then there's 10 on a picture round, an anagram, guess the year and more. If we'd not some true music buffs on our team, I'm sure I'd have been too embarrassed to hand in the sheet. Turns out we just about retained dignity with 25/40/ (Yeah, I know. It's a poor effort.) The other bit of trivia to this quiz is that it's been running for eons -perhaps 15 years or so, and to that end, is an institution in Leeds. Essentially, what I'm saying is, that when you're faced with a pub that is as standard as the next in structure, it's details like the above that make it stand out. Go for the awesome bar dude, and his vapour pipe, but stay for the music quiz and friendly locals. I am a fan.

The precedent has been set. I'm now open to most things (as long as no cruelty to animals is…read moreinvolved). So be it a swanky bar or traditional pub, I hold no fear. From the outside the Regent appears to be the latter. It's a bubbling pub with quite an odd mixture of people. I'm not sure who it's trying to attract but I guess diversity is a good thing and it's certainly a diverse mix of loud sports fans and quiet smaller groups quaffing away in the corner. Maybe it's because of its location or maybe it's because it appeals to a broad selection of people. Plus it's good beer ahoy. A pint of Black Sheep and most people are reasonably happy with that. For me, it didn't quite feel right. Nothing that inspirational or stand out to be getting me to hurry back. Nothing especially bad either but it's not somewhere I'd essentially go out of my way for.

Woodies is probably most well known for being the start of the Otley run (although, traditionally,…read moreit should be started at the Lawnswood Arms in Adel), but there is much more to this place than merely a starting post for a pub crawl. As is is on the very edge of Headingley, it has as more locals than students, and as such feels more authentic than some of the drinking holes in Headingley, something that is evident by the fact that it still calls itself an 'ale house'. One of the best things about Woodies is this devotion to ale: it serves, for example, Deuchars, a fruity pale ale that you are unlikely to find anywhere else in Headingley (except maybe Arcadia). There is a pool table, a dart-board and a huge projector screen for important sporting occasions, as well as a huge heated smoking area out the back. The food is good and cheap, like the drinks, and you never have to wait too long to get served. Woodies is undeniably a good place to start your evening, but it's not a bad place to finish it either.

And for me that sums Woodies up - great real ale pub but lacking a special something that would earn that 5th star. Situated at the top end of Headingley. I nipped in there for a pint last night for the first time in ages with Mr MacDoo on our monthly Date Night. There was a decent range of ales on. I went for the lovely Golden Sheep by Balck Sheep Brewery. We're out of term time at the moment, but there was still a group of students in the customary fancy dress that comes with doing the Otley run (for those not familiar, this is a big pub crawl that starts at the top of Otley Road and takes you right down towards the city centre. If you stay standing that long!) Thankfully, Woodies is the first pub on the Otley run so the revellers weren't too rowdy and things hadn't got that messy yet! Woodies has a pool table and a big screen tv for sports events, as well as smaller tvs dotted about the place. There are also a couple of nice little hidey spots when you can have a bit more privacy and enjoy a quieter drink. The beer was lovely and the atmos nice. I'll definitely return again.
