I've visited this coffee shop a couple times over the years, most recently in August between plays…read moreduring a pre-Fringe preview performance at the Roxy Theatre down the street. It's always kind of surprising that a large, cozy independent cafe like this exists on this part of 124th street, which gets progressively seedier as you travel north towards 118th Ave. My theatre-going companion and I ordered a hot chocolate and a coffee respectively, both of which I'd grade a B-. Not spectacular, but very good. In addition to my coffee, I ordered a slice of some sort of delicious-looking berry and graham cracker square from the cooler filled with trays of individually-wrapped treats, But looks can be deceiving; I bit into it and was greeted with a flavour reminiscent of the post-flood smell of the elementary-school art projects my mom had saved in a box in the basement. Closer inspection of the square revealed large spots of mold that had obviously had at least a few days of time to settle down and procreate. In retrospect, I should never have ordered a saran-wrapped pastry from a huge pile in a shop that can't possibly move more than a handful of them on a regular day. For this particular area, the Sugar Bowl is still your best bet, but if I were to visit again I'd steer clear of the pastry case.

I also had a simple question about whether or not any of their drinks that contain dairy (e.g. Yogurt) could be substituted with a non dairy option (like sorbet that Booster juice does) but the lady taking my order couldn't understand my question and kept telling me the veggie smoothies didn't have dairy. Finally she had to ask another coworker to assist me with my question. The other person wasn't any better in answering me other than telling me which options didn't have dairy. Fine. I ended up ordering the Jugo Classico by their recommendation and it was good but nothing to write home about. Next time I will stick with a locally owned favourite - Booster Juice

One of the best things about this Cafe is that in addition to nice wraps, good soup and nutritious smoothies and juices, they also serve gluten free, dairy free and vegan selections. The prices aren't the cheapest in town, but you pay for the quality. The hubs was thrilled to discover a huge date/granola/square type bar that is soft, chewy and incredibly filling while still being gluten free AND dairy free. They have also told him they can prepare him a gluten free wrap. The ambiance is light and casual with lots of great art. Check out the huge piece on the middle wall, on the right hand side, facing away from the kitchen. Some say it is interesting, some say creepy but I prefer whimsical. If it was just a bit smaller, I would pack those cute pair of jeans up and take them home with me! The Cafe has expanded twice since they opened - once to add a patio and the second time to more than double their interior seating.

Although scary looking with its bright green colour, I recommend the kale smoothie for a fresh drink. Some of the sandwiches are a bit bland and some, such as the spicy chicken, don't transcribe well to salad. As far as the soups go, I recommend the Spicy Thai Chicken. Although it comes with an extra charge over the regular soups, it is filling and flavourful with a generous portion.

Gluten-free granola is a highlight. This is the first totally safe açai bowl I've had in Canada…read more They use a coconut rather than oat base, so for all my oat-avoidant celiacs out there, this is a pleasant surprise. It's definitely worth considering taking home a bag of this granola. The predominant milk they use in their lattes is oat (gluten free), but alternatives are available. I've tried a couple of the mushroom lattes, and the Chana Charger is my favourite. The lunch bowls are predominantly gluten free or can easily be adjusted to be so. The produce is always fresh, which allows natural flavours of the ingredients to really come through and make their dishes stand out. The location on 104 St is very accessible from downtown, but if you drive, expect to pay a couple bucks for street parking. With an order at the till and sit anywhere system, it is an accessible place to go on your own and/or get some work done. There is also plenty of space to go with a group or meet for coffee. It was a bit pricey, $22 for my açai bowl and latte, but you definitely get what you pay for. And that's what keeps me coming back!
