I LOVE BOOKPLATE! I would seriously consider purchasing a place in Chestertown, just so that I can visit Bookplate everyday!!! This used bookstore not only offers an impressive collection of a wide-range of categories, but they are meticulously organized and labeled on the shelves and of pristine condition! Signed first-editions? Yes, Bookplate has 'em! In addition, there are some greeting cards, pottery, and olive oil available for purchasing! The staff here are super friendly and welcoming, and they highly encourage you to peruse, peruse, peruse. There are even chairs and benches strategically placed around the store for you to sit down and check out the selection. We found a great comprehensive book on the Korean War, and a first-edition of a children's book that would just tickle anyone! When you step inside, the store itself looks a bit narrow and small; however, it spreads all the way towards the back! I also love that they have independent publishers being showcased and offer great in-store events (such as author visits, lectures, parties, music sessions, etc.). This bookstore is a lovely local business - I hope they're around forever! Check Bookplate out - you won't be disappointed! :D +used bookstore +first editions & signed copies available +pottery and olive oil available for purchasing +friendly staff :D

One of the best stocked and organized used bookstores I've encountered. A pleasure to visit. Tom Martin, proprietor, knows the business.

What a charming new and used bookstore in fed hill. I've seen this store for years and years and…read morenever stopped in. But I was in the area checking out a new vintage store and thought I'd pop in. Retail is kind of dying in this area, but book escape was thriving. There were lots of people in there browsing and reading. There's a really cute back area with a mermaid mural and a reading nook. There's a lot of brand new books sold at 15% off, which are among the best sellers list. I thought in this economy - what a steal of a deal that is! The front desk is right around the front corner and the owner seemed nice. There's a huge selection of music in the corner and I thought that for a used bookstore, it was really well organized. It is a little clustered, but overall really bright and airy and lots of books!

The Book Escape is moderate in size. It has a well organized assortment of books and LP's. We enjoyed our time there and ended up with two books and a record album. But had we had more time (we spent maybe 45 minutes) we could easily have arrived upon another 5 or 6 title we just HAD to read. Loved the setting, loved the street parking, and loved the store.

I must have walked by Back Creek Books dozens and dozens of times - on Main Street among dozens of…read moreother shops and restaurants and bars, it's right truly in the heart of historic Annapolis. And yet I'd never stopped in until last week! I don't know what took me so long. It's a bookstore, but it's not your every day bookstore. Back Creek Books sells used books and antiquarian books (rare and very old books). It's small, so I wondered if I wouldn't find something I wanted to take home with me. What a silly thought. I had about 20 minutes to kill before heading to a work event and popped in. I found several books I wanted to take home within just a few minutes and without even leaving the first one or two bookshelves (fiction). They have lots of older editions, signed books, and less common finds - many at still very affordable prices (don't get intimidated by their very rare and quite expensive books in the front window, not everything in the shop is a first edition with a high price tag). I picked up a signed book of short stories that I'm really excited to read. This probably isn't the bookshop for you if you're looking for something specific or if you only read new releases. But it's a great shop for browsing if you're looking for something unexpected, different, or special!

The bar is quaint and cute. Not a vast menu, but it's not needed! Love the local select beers that are available although I opted for the gin cocktail. Very reasonably priced. It's very quiet during the day, quite a few there to read and work in a quiet space and it serves that purpose well. I've also visited in the evening before where a book club meeting was ending and a D&D campaign was beginning and it was quite lively, but still a great vibe. I've had 2 visits now with many more to come. Store workers were super friendly and greeting me upon entering and looking around. Bartender was friendly as well and seemed to enjoy engaging with the guests.

It's larger than I thought it might be - two stories. While not the best stocked bookstore I've ever been to, Backwater offers more than just books. It has a bar upstairs and it's set up for live music as well. It has some great seating for opening a book to read a few pages to see if you want to take it home. The customer service was great as well. Folks in Ellicott City are lucky to have this amazing bookshop. I'll definitely be back in the future (hopefully for a shop, drink, and music next time)!
