What a great used bookstore! While visiting Chestertown, I walked inside expecting a small shop, but I was fooled. Shelves organized well and filled with books keep going, pouring into other rooms filled with treasures. There are nooks to sit and read. To test the quality of sections, I found the travel section and discovered the best variety of guide books anywhere. They even had a book to explore Kazakhstan! read more

We were spending a long 'girls weekend' in Chestertown, MD. One of the recommended spots for us to visit was Bookplate. I'm so glad for that! Bookplate is a well stocked bookstore, with a blend of new and pre-owned books, some paper products, hand made journals, and cloth bags for re-usable shopping. It was such a joy spending an hour, maybe more, checking out all the books they had, everything from children's books to elder books, how-to, reference, etc. The staff were lovely, friendly and also unobtrusive. Their pricing was very reasonable for new books and for pre-owned books, and the hand-made products I'd say were slightly under-priced. I picked up some postcards, a small journal and a couple of 'beach read' books. I would absolutely stop here again the next time we're visiting. read more

Bookplate is a bibliophile's paradise where you can while away hours browsing the shelves for that obscure used title you didn't know was missing from your life or the latest bestseller that you've been trying to get your hands on. On our visit to the Eastern Shore, we were fortunate to wander into The Bookplate where we were transported into a place where our imaginations could be satisfied well beyond the bland experience most book browsing has become these days. The selection was bountiful, diverse and fulfilling. We transited from section to section entranced with a beautifully curated selection. The eclectic layout of the shelves made the seeking even more engaging.... The staff was engaging, amazingly helpful and encouraged our adventure. Our time here slid away (as it should) to the point where part of our party moved on, but like all good adventures, ours ended in a glorious conquest which will quench our thirst for amazing reads for several more days. If ever in Chestertown, do not miss the opportunity to venture into The Bookplate. You will only regret if you fail to go in. read more

Bookplate is one of my favorite independent bookstores. The selection is vast and the topics are equally varied. The shelves are helpfully labeled in very specific descriptions. I've found a number of rare or obscure titles across a number of topics. Chestertown is a great little town to visit and bookplate is a must! Staff is friendly and helpful, too! read more

One of the best bookstores in America. This is a real book lover's store. I've come here twice over several months and am in love. I'll be back! The curation is superb: the selection reflects the tastes of a sophisticated, intellectually engaged, and humane reader of a wide range of genres and issues. No junk at all. I've purchased books ranging from hard-to-find classic on Downeast Maine, naturalist novels, three volume beautifully bound copy of One Thousand and One Nights, to inexpensive paperbacks to Folio Society hardcovers. The prices are also highly reasonable -- the common paperbacks sell for $5-$8 and the special items are highly reasonable for what they are. The store is large so you'll have a lot of options. read more

Love this place! I was visiting Chestertown and stopped by. The selection was VAST, the staff was friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. They were able to track down a copay of Jared Diamonds "The Third Chimpanzee" for me. The Bookplate is worth a weekly visit, I know I will be back when life brings me back to Chestertown MD again. I LOVE BOOKPLATE! I would seriously consider purchasing a place in Chestertown, just so that I can visit Bookplate everyday!!! This used bookstore not only offers an impressive collection of a wide-range of categories, but they are meticulously organized and labeled on the shelves and of pristine condition! Signed first-editions? Yes, Bookplate has 'em! In addition, there are some greeting cards, pottery, and olive oil available for purchasing! The staff here are super friendly and welcoming, and they highly encourage you to peruse, peruse, peruse. There are even chairs and benches strategically placed around the store for you to sit down and check out the selection. We found a great comprehensive book on the Korean War, and a first-edition of a children's book that would just tickle anyone! When you step inside, the store itself looks a bit narrow and small; however, it spreads all the way towards the back! I also love that they have independent publishers being showcased and offer great in-store events (such as author visits, lectures, parties, music sessions, etc.). This bookstore is a lovely local business - I hope they're around forever! We discovered this store by chance driving through Chestertown on our way to an inn we had booked. The store is meticulously organized and offers used books in excellent condition on a broad range of topics. Prices are also reasonable and we might even visit this part of the Chesapeake again to shop here. This is truly a book lovers heaven!! In addition, Chestertown is a little jewel of a town full of beautiful historic homes from the 17 and 18 hundreds so it's worth a walking tour. read more

I spent 1.5 hours in here by accident because I was entranced by all the books here. It's a one floor store with a large back room that has a table and chairs. The staff is super friendly and the prices are decent. I found a few treasures here and you will too with some patience :D I was a wee bit upset they didn't have any/much books about yoga, meditation, or reflexology but I settled for my mystery book fix instead read more

fascinating. this may be the least dissapointing place in the entire town. chestertown simply is not good enough for this store flat out. usually being a business this wonderful is a death sentence around here but somehow this one has gone the distance. even if you despise books and reading you will still love the bookplate. there is something for everyone in here. and it is beautifully arranged and organized and has nice places to sit. and its cheap. read more

This is the quintessential used book store -- it has a wonderful layout, benches for those who like to read before they buy, and a knowledgeable, friendly owner who is well-connected to fellow indy bookstore owners in the mid-Atlantic. My guy loves history, politics, and signed first editions, and he was bowled over by the collection here. We have visited used book stores far and wide, in many states, and this may be his favorite to date. I loved the store layout and overall feel. I collect cookbooks, and this store's selection was small but strong (quirky books, not the type you would find at Barnes & Nobles). The owner has an encyclopedic knowledge of books and a clear passion for his work. He also has a friendly black cat who is perfectly comfortable hanging out at the cash register, happy to be petted by customers. I've been to this bookstore on two occasions. Both times, I've enjoyed myself enormously. There's something to be said for a small bookstore piled up with books to get lost in. It has a very homey feel, almost as if you had walked into the home of someone who loves books just a little too much, but is very organized. It's not bad if you're looking for something in particular, but if you want to just pass time in a quiet place surrounded by books, this is the place to go. read more
