This place is mind blowing! Ceiling to floor books everywhere, as far as the eye can see and then some. They have some how managed to categorize every room and isle. They have many first editions and original books dating back as early as the 1800's. It's truly an amazing sight to behold. You most definitely can't get through all the books in one visit and I would not recommend anyone try too. If you ever think about a book that you once read many years ago and you wish you knew where it was, you can probably find it here! There is a single bathroom here that anyone can use and there is an upstairs level that I was too scared to check out. I didn't want to get lost... The guy that was here has organized a lot of these books and you can tell that he has worked here for many many years. He is sooo extremely nice and tries to offer help in the navigation of this quite overwhelming book collection. I would definitely go back to visit.

Look at all these fine books.

Look, I'm going to level with you. I have serious book problem. I tried to get help for it, but nothing has worked yet. And my friends are enablers. Take this one time, my friend is all "Let's go to this little bookstore down the way, secondhand books. What's the worse that could happen?" Alright, let's do this. And then I walk in to the Unicorn. Outside it looks small and tidy, but inside? It has portals to dimensions, dimensions that hold more books. There are hallways and a upstairs, and nook and crannies, and shelves that reach the ceiling. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I didn't have enough time to go through each little hidden space in this establishment, mainly because I feared I would never return from whatever dimension held 'Mythology' and "Maps'. So now I have to go back. Many times. *sigh* I volunteered just to give the owner all the money I had if he would let me live there, but he declined. Apparently, he gets those sort of offers all the time. Well, I gathered up my books and was about to head out the door and when, what's this? A whole room of signed and early edition works? And then's that when I collapsed in happiness. It's on 50 headed towards the ocean. But if you never make it to the shore because of all the awesomeness oozing from this little store? Don't blame me. I warned you.

Is this store still open? We stopped by during business hours, it was closed.

Yup - He's still in business! Try again - he may have had some sort of emergency, but he's generally there every day.

The space is beautifully conceived, inviting you to wander slowly and take in every aisle. I genuinely enjoyed the act of browsing here, which feels like a small luxury in itself. The only snag was an assumption on my part. Given the setting, I expected a more robust local history presence or at least a thoughtfully curated selection highlighting the region. Works on Underground Railroad and abolitionist networks, tourism history, or even local ecology felt notably absent. The offerings on Tubman and Douglass were surprisingly thin. Still, the store's elegance and breadth are undeniable, even if its sense of place could be more fully realized.

I would have happily recommended this bookstore, but my experience last week changed my opinion…read more After purchasing several items, I asked if they could be gift wrapped. The cashier immediately replied, "No." When I asked why, she responded, "Because we're closed." While I understand that it was approximately two minutes past closing time, I was already in the store completing my purchase. A small gesture of customer service would have made a lasting positive impression. Instead, I left feeling that my business was an inconvenience rather than appreciated. Independent bookstores thrive because of the relationships they build with their customers, and I expected a level of courtesy that matched that reputation. I hope the store considers empowering its staff to show a little more flexibility and kindness in situations like this. Great customer service is often remembered long after the purchase itself.

And yet I'd never stopped in until last week! I don't know what took me so long. It's a bookstore, but it's not your every day bookstore. Back Creek Books sells used books and antiquarian books (rare and very old books). It's small, so I wondered if I wouldn't find something I wanted to take home with me. What a silly thought. I had about 20 minutes to kill before heading to a work event and popped in. I found several books I wanted to take home within just a few minutes and without even leaving the first one or two bookshelves (fiction). They have lots of older editions, signed books, and less common finds - many at still very affordable prices (don't get intimidated by their very rare and quite expensive books in the front window, not everything in the shop is a first edition with a high price tag). I picked up a signed book of short stories that I'm really excited to read. This probably isn't the bookshop for you if you're looking for something specific or if you only read new releases. But it's a great shop for browsing if you're looking for something unexpected, different, or special!

However, the signage is a little confusing. From the street, you can only see the big sign that says "Children's Books". So if you are looking for something that says "The White Rabbit", then you may accidentally pass the entrance and have to turn around.. like I did! No big deal though. The staff is friendly and helpful. It's a small store and there were only two people working. No one greeted me when I walked in, but I saw an employee helping someone pick out a book for her grandson, so I wasn't too upset about not being attended to. I was really just there to browse anyway :) I didn't really have anything specific in mind, but I found a ton of great books and items I would love to purchase. For being such a small store, they definitely have a great stock of books! Many of the books are unique and look like collector's items. I really want to buy The Wizard of Oz series eventually. However, I didn't want to spend too much so I only bought two books ($35 for both) and a small plush toy for $10. So in total, I only spent $45 which I thought was pretty reasonable seeing as this is a small bookstore and I love to support small, local businesses. If you're in the area, you should definitely stop by and see what you may find :) They have books for all ages - from baby to teen!
